From Our Pastor Jonathan Witt A Sudden Death Victory Admittedly, I do not know a lot about golf, but I have learned that in many tournaments, if the leaders are tied after the 18 th hole, the usual method for breaking the tie is called sudden death. In sudden death, the players will play additional holes until someone takes the lead and wins. For example, Jordan Spieth, who won this year’s Masters, recently won another victory in a sudden death playoff at a PGA tour event. It looked like he might have to wait for victory on another day, but then suddenly the victory was his. On July 25 th , Don Handberry, a long-time deacon of First Baptist and a faithful servant of our Lord, was tragically killed in a horrible accident. He had ridden out that day on his four-wheeler to scout a piece of land that he planned to hunt deer on later this year. He was simply doing something that he loved to do, enjoying God’s creation firsthand. I’m sure that he had no idea that he would die in the process of doing that. One minute he was riding along and the next he was dead. From an Earthly perspective alone, some might say that Don’s death was a sudden defeat, but from Heaven’s perspective, it was a sudden victory. Suddenly, Don was in the presence of His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. That is the way it is with the Master and His servants. We are at His beck and call, and should be ready at a moment’s notice to respond. Obviously, the time came for the Lord to call Don home, or he would still be here. Jesus spoke of the Rapture of the Church to His disciples, explaining that it would be sudden and at an unexpected time, but death often comes as suddenly and unexpectedly as the Rapture will. And just as we need to be ready for the Lord to come for us in the Rapture, we need to be ready for Him to call for us in death. Jesus said, “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming… Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not ex- pect” (Matt. 24:42, 44, NKJV). Jesus went on to say, “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his Master made ruler over His household, to give them food in due season? Blessed is that servant whom his Master, when He comes, will find so doing” (Matt. 24:45-46, NKJV). Don Handberry was that kind of servant, taking care of his family at home and his family at Church, as well as taking care of the people of the community. He knew that the Lord was watching him and he was watching for the Lord. On the day of his death, I’m sure it looked like just another day to watch for the Lord, but then suddenly the wait was over. The real tragedy would have been if he had not been a servant of the Lord, for then his sudden death would have been a sudden defeat. Thankfully, because he was a ser- vant of the Lord Jesus Christ, he experienced a sudden death victory instead. We should all heed the example of his life and death, that we might all experience victory when our time comes. Local Mission Opportunity Our Women on Mission and the Women’s Ministry Group, will be putting together Christmas gifts for those who are homebound or in the nursing home. We need approximately 160 gifts, and we need your help. Each month, we will be collecting items needed for this project. Collection bins will be in the hallway by the children’s wing. A Sudden Death Victory

Admittedly, I do not know a lot about golf, but I have learned that in many tournaments, if the leaders are tied after the 18th hole, the usual method for breaking the tie is called sudden death.

On July 25th, Don Handberry, a long-time deacon of First Baptist and a faithful servant of our Lord, was tragically killed in a horrible accident.

Jesus said, “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming… Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not ex-pect” (Matt.
