DIRECTOR’SSTATEMENTFromtheword‘GO’Iwasexcitedaboutthisproject.I’madrummerandforyearsI’dreadalonginthetradesasdrummersravedaboutJohnPatitucci’splaying.WhatI(andpresumablymanyothers)didn’tknowwasthegreatpersonheisoffstage.Thetwisttothisrecordwasthat,despiteallhisaccolades,Johnwasgoingtohavetoself-produceit.“Indie”wasnewtohim.Heisaloyalfamilymanandgoesathousandmilesanhourteachingandtouring.Howwouldhekeepallthetopsspinningandwherewouldthatdriveemanatefrom?Thatbecameourstory.IdidnotwanttoapproachitlikeanEPK,wherewewalkedinforanhourandhopedforthebest.Wefeltitwascrucialtocapturetheentirerecordingprocess,soweshotmoreorlesscontinuouslyforfourdays.Itwasadance,nodoubt,butthebandwassoaccommodatingthatshootingbecamequitefluidandtheirenergyreallyoozesoutofthecut.FilmmakingisjustafancywordforteamworkandIwasblessedwithanamazingcrew.I’mreallyproudofthisfilm.PRODUCER’SNOTESWhilewehadageneralideaofJohnPatitucci'slifeandcareer,weweremotivatedtofilmadocumentarybywhatwedidn'tknowabouthim,thestorythatwouldrevealitselfoncethecameraswererolling.Asthestoryunfoldedweweremovedtosharewiththeworldapersonwhomadeittothetopofhisfieldtherightway,throughrelentlesshardworkanddevotiontothehistory,artandcraftofjazz.Somestoriesoffamousmusiciansrevealgrittyartistswhofindfamedespitetheoddsofsubstanceabuseorotherdemons.Yethereisanartistwhofollowshisfaith,hisfamily,andhispassionwithintegrityandwithoutcompromise.Hisethicsareenoughtomotivateanyonetodotherightthing.Inourcase,itwastomakethisfilm.WhatauniqueandintegratedlifeJohnleads.Hisfansandthegeneralpublicwillbeinspiredbyacloseuplookatamanwhohasthesamedailystrugglesandquestionsastherestofus,allwhileleadinghisfascinatinglifeacrosstheglobeasacontemporaryjazzicon.WhatseparatesJohnfromotherswemighthavefocusedonishisintentionalwayofliving.Hedesirestopracticeaspirituallycenteredlifethatisinperfectrhythmwithhismusic,family,friendsandstudents.WeknewthatJohnjugglessomanyaspectsofhislifesimultaneously,seeminglywithoutdroppingone.Wedidn'tknowhowhedoesit,norwherethekeystoryelementofconflictmightappear.Thenarrativeinadocumentaryiscreatedfromobservationwhilefilmingandediting.Wediscoveredtheelementofconflictissublimeinthisfilm.Perhapsitisinthestressofkeepingallofthejuggledballsintheairand

givingthemalltheattentiontheyaredue.AndtherewelearnaboutthepowerofintegrationthatJohntapsinto,howonepartofhislifefeedsoffanother,andnonestandsalone.HecannotcomposeorplayasongwithouttellingyouabouthisSaviororhisfamilymembersorwithoutusingthatsonginaprivatelessonwithhisstudents.Itallbecomesonelife,andthatbecamethefilm'snarrative.CreatingthefilmtookusjustoverayearstartingwiththefirstdayofshootinginthePatituccihomeandstudioinNewYork,capturingtherecordrecordingprocessatTheBunkerstudioinBrooklyn,followingJohntohismonthlyteachinggigatBerkleeCollege’sBerkleeGlobalJazzInstituteinBoston.AfterthatwaveofproductionweknewwehadtointerviewthreeofthemainmusicalmentorsinJohn'slife.HecallsthemhisMt.Rushmore:ChickCorea,HerbieHancockandWayneShorter.TherewereothersinthemusicindustrythatweinterviewedaswellastheluthieratYamahawhomadeJohn’snewone-offelectricbass.Asproducersofafilmcenteredaroundajazzmusicianwewereinoverourheads,becomingenamoredwithjazzandatthesametimehavinganunderdevelopedknowledgeofit.WhatwelearnedfromJohnduringourfilmingisthatjazzandhislifesharenumeroussimilarities.JazzandJohn'slifearerootedinthedeepspiritualityoflearningtorejoiceandgrieveatthesametime.JazzandJohn'slifearedependentonrelationshipsthatmustinteractinordertoresonateandharmonize.JazzandJohn'slifearemarkedbysoloadventuresthatalwaysreturntosharewhatthey'velearnedwiththewholegroup.Althoughpepperedwithimprovisation,jazzandJohn'slifearebaseduponfundamentalsthatremainconstantandtrue.JazzandJohnbothcontainthatmixofsweetnessandmelancholythatcanonlybediscoveredbycarefuldiscernmentandappreciation.AugustSkyFilmsstartedwithastoryyettounfold.Alongthewaywediscoveredaninspirationalartistincessantlypursuingalifethatintegrateseveryoneofhisrelationshipsandpassions.
