Eventhoughthe 2010

season is notover, themonth ofAugust startsall the buzz for

the 2011 season. In fact, when youpurchase a USCRA card afterAugust 1, you are buying a2011card with the benefit of thechance to go the 2010 USCRAFinals, a “Two for One” kind ofdeal. Naturally, if you buy a 2011card you want to know what toexpect for the 2011 season.

The 2011 USCRA season is goingto be a season full of excitementand changes. There are some greatropings already signed on like theRoland Reid Memorial at theStockyards in Ft. Worth, the SpringClassic giving away Barnes saddlesin all divisions, the Mo Betta held inApache, Oklahoma, and the W.E.BMemorial, to name a few. TheUSCRA is very excited to have thesegreat ropings on the calendar for the2011 season.

For the 2011 season, the USCRAwants to go back to having a fewbig ropings instead of a bunch ofsmall ropings. As it looks right now, there will be 12 ropings, with 11 ofthese already scheduled. There willbe some special events held withsome of the more successfulropings, to be announced at a laterdate. The plan is to try and havemore four- and five-head ropings. There are even plans to have aneight-header at the Calf RopersReunion in Bryan, Texas. The datesof these ropings have beencoordinated with other big ropings,so that nobody has to miss any bigropings, whether it be a USCRAevent, Joe’s Boot Shop roping, theBubblegum Roping, or Barry Burk’sJr. Roping. The USCRA is excitedabout it and hopes that the ropersare also.

More changes and details willcome out in next month’s magazine,

but I will leave you with a few ofthe changes. As far as the numbersystem goes, the EE, 00, #1 and #2will stay the same; however, therewill no longer be a #3 or B-Breakaway. The USCRA will bebringing back the Open Tiedownand the Open Breakaway. The #3’swill be grouped with the open andthe breakaway ropers will all begrouped into one division. The openbreakaway will also become awomen’s only event.

There will be no “World Finals”for the 2011 Season. The Semi-Finals and the Showdown Finalswill still be the showcase at the end of the season with a few minor changes.

The 2011 season is looking to beone of the most exciting seasons inthe 16-year history of the USCRA.However, we want to invite all calfropers to not miss out on the 2010Finals because after all, it is still the“Largest Calf Roping in the World.”All you have to do is come to theLabor Day weekend roping inGiddings, Texas and you are eligiblefor the 2010 and 2011 Finals.

The future superstars of the sport were present, shaking out loops, and making lightning fast runs tobid for their shot at the tremendous payout at thenew North Texas Premier Equine Facility, DiamondT Arena in Denton, Texas. the fences to where theevent producer, eight-timePRCA world championand namesake of theevent, Superlooper RoyCooper was there to cheeron each contestant andwitness the next heap ofgreat talent in the sport.

Each day started at 9 a.m. and consisted ofboth calf roping andbreakaway action in fivedivisions that includedthree full go rounds and atop 10 short round thatwould eventuallydetermine the championson a total of 4-head ofcattle. The big event of

the weekend was the 19 and Under WorldChampionship Jr. Calf Roping that played out onSaturday. This roping consisted of a 3-head ropingwith the top 16 back to Elimination Rounds wherethe two slowest ropers were eliminated in eachround. The roping was nothing short of great and theend result gave title to the 2010 Roy Cooper’s WorldChampionship Jr. Calf Roper - Reese Reimer!

T they died – and waited until they were dying to starton the list. I would like to buy a Corvette and visitHawaii. Well I don’t want to buy a Corvette or visitHawaii when I’m 85 years old.

Kids today are great procrastinators if allowed. Asstudents how many say or think I’ll start studying andget serious about school when I get to high school, orcollege? They are developing life-long habits right nowand there just won’t be a magical moment that comesalong when they will suddenly be an exemplarystudent. That only comes with effort and hard work.

What about ropers who say, “When I get areally nice horse I’ll take good care of him.” Whywouldn’t you take good care of any or all of yourhorses? It’s a personal choice to do the right thing.

Congratulations to Matt Shiozawa for winning the$100,000 at Calgary. It was a very exciting finishwhere the final four guys roped and Matt and FredWhitfield were both 7.4. They had to have a rope off

A special thanks to my sponsors for supporting not only me, but also the sport that lets me do what I love.

TM

he other day I heard someone say, “One of these days, I’ll….” After some thought I latertold my wife that “One of these days” is code for never.

I realized that in the past I had occasionally said, “Oneof these days I’ll do a school in Hawaii and we’ll go thereon vacation.” That’s a nice thought and something I’dreally like to do for my family, but I have never taken anyaction on it. Well, that’s not exactly fair to my family, togive them false hope for something I mention casually.

When you catch yourself saying, “One of these days...”stop and take a hard look at what you’re talking about. Isthis something you really intend to do? How many timeshave you heard people say, “One of these days I’m going tostart exercising,” or “One of these days I’m going to loseweight.” I don’t doubt their intentions, but there’s a bigdifference between dreaming and doing. Remember the oldsaying, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”

It reminds me of the movie “The Bucket List.” Thosetwo guys had a list of things they wanted to do before

Whitfield were both 7.4. They had to have a rope off and rope one calf forthe $100,000. Matt tied his in 6.5-seconds. Fred would have to be 6.4 to beathim. It looked like he was going to get it done until his string popped up.

It’s awesome to watch guys of that caliber rise to the occasion when thepressure is on. It made for good watching and my hat is off to both of them. All professional cowboys work very hard at what we do and what separatesus from professional football or baseball players is that we have to win toget paid. That’s the nature of the beast of our sport. Congratulations Matt.

Till next time, God Bless and I’ll see you down the line.

What Do I Have That Jesus Wants?

“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thyheart and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And thesecond is like unto it, thou shalt love your neighboras yourself.” Matt. 22:37-40

Concentration is a wonderful thing if ourattention is focused on the right things inlife. Have you ever had somebody that

wanted to talk to you while you were watchingyour favorite television program? Even knowingthat the topic of conversation was really importantto the person who had just approached you, wouldyour eye still have a tendency to drift back to thetelevision program as they continued to talk toyou? In life, it seems as though distractions can be

as much of an enemy to relationships as it is to anysporting event that you participate in. Whether youare talking to your spouse, roping a calf or catching a football, concentration always seems to be a vital key to success. In our relationships with people as well as with God, focused attention isessential to that relationship. Four out of the TenCommandments deal with our relationship to Godand the other six commandments deal with ourrelationships with people.

If you want to know where your priorities are, justask yourself this simple question — where do I spendmost of my time and with whom or what? If theobject of your affection or your number one priority isanything but God first, and people second, chances arereally good that the focus of your attention is flawed.Jesus said the two greatest commandments are verysimple: love God and love people.

“For where your treasure is there will your heart bealso.” Matthew 6:21

just talked to a friend and hetold me one of the funniest stories I have had heard in a

long time. I won’t tell you the wholestory, but it consisted of a day trip toan amusement park, bug spray,Benadryl, and a long day in the hotTexas sun. Least to say, I wish I couldhave been there to see it first-handand if you get a chance to talk to BenClements, USTRC announcer andSuperLooper editor, ask him about itfor a good laugh.

It has been a while since I laughedat something so funny and I have tosay it felt pretty good. Thanks Ben!

Now on to the world of calf ropingand WOW, what a month it has been. The USCRA hosted another great 4thof July event in Stephenville. Over$50,000 in cash paid out and greatlooking Tod Slone saddles awarded

I made this one of the biggest of theyear. For those who tune into thePRCA ranks, Brazile is at it again andthe July 4th weekend was a good onefor him. He pocketed over $24,000 atthe cowboy Christmas events acrossthe country. The winning gave him a huge lead in the All Aroundstandings, however, Stran Smith isonly about $10,000 behind him forthe lead in the tie-down ropingstandings. I am sure this will be agreat race till the end.

Going back to the USCRA, I haveto admit I had a little inside track onthe new formats they will be hostingthroughout 2011. Look back at lastmonth’s column if you don’tremember. I gave a little preview andhopefully got calf ropers looking ahead to these types of larger eventswith bigger payouts and more prizes. I

still feel if the sport can grow, theseare the types of events that willmakeit happen. People winning larger payouts will attract more to the sport and that will spread acrossthe country.

The way I see it, the USCRAalready has a great classificationsystem that is honest and fair. Roperswill enjoy having a chance to rope for more money at these events. However, they will attend moresmaller events to get tuned up forwhen the larger events come around. It really is a win-win for everyone. The USCRA stands up as the leader inthe industry, hosting the best of thebest, producers still get a chance tohost local events where ropers canparticipate, win and get prepared forlarger events and for the ropers thereis a variety of events to attend.
