2010 National Finalshe cowboy capital of the world, Stephenville, Texasonce again took center stage for the sport of CalfRoping as the 2010 USCRA National Finals took

place on September 16-19. Calf ropers, breakaway ropersand fans came together for this once a year event thatproved yet again the sport is alive and well. Thecompetition was fierce as ropers battled it out in the Semi-Finals, Showdown Finals, and the USCRA World Finalsevents throughout the weekend, all bidding for their shareof the huge cash and prize payout.

This year’s total payout including cash and prizes wasover $100,000! Close to 750 entries filled the event, allwith hopes of taking home part of the payout in cash, aswell as one or more of the great prizes that includedMartin saddles, Wilde West buckles, and trophy garmentbags. Young to old – men and women, the USCRA Finalshad a place for all types of ropers and the means to offerthem a chance to compete at one of the best events ofthe year.

Out of the four days of roping, two individuals stoodout just a little more than the rest. The first was TyThompson who stepped into the winners circle first in theShowdown Roping event. The Brekenridge, Texas cowboywon the #1 Showdown Finals with a four head total of43.76 seconds to win just over $2,000. Thompson did notstop there though and came back and won the #1 WorldFinals as well. There he roped three head in 30.22 seconds, winning just under $2,000. In addition Thompson loadedup on prizes in the two events.

Kyle Parrish was another roper who claimed a big partof this year’s event spotlight. The young cowboy claimedfirst place in the EE Semi-Finals event with a 34.13 secondaverage, winning $1,640 in cash. His winning wayscontinued as he claimed the Average of the Showdown EEevent also. This time the Dale, Texas competitor roped andtied four head in 41.51 seconds to win just over $3,100, aswell as part of the prize line up for grabs.

The event offered a chance for many competitors toshare the spotlight at this year's USCRA Finals. Beginningwith the B-Breakaway ropings, Lauren Winkler took homethe Semi-Finals championship, while Kassidy Jones wonthe Showdown B-Breakaway and Ty Harris won the WorldFinals event in the B-Breakaway.

As Kyle Parrish claimed two of the three EE event titlesat the Finals, Rody Ballard from Combine, Texas claimed

the World Finals EE title.Rolling through this year’s 00 Ropings champions,

Westin Imhoff was the big winner of the Semi-Finals, whileBailey Thurston took the win in the Showdown Finalsevent. Trinity Haggard stepped up to win the 00 WorldFinals title.

Local Stephenville, Texas cowboy, Shane Steeves openedup early in the #1 division, winning the Semi-Finals event. However, the other two roping titles in the #1 divisionwent home with Ty Thompson.

In the #2 division, the races were tight in every event.Jacob Smith took home the #2 Semi-Finals titles, while SethMahaffey was the big winner of the #2 Showdown Finals. In the World Finals, Dustan DeWinne claimed the win.

As usual the Lone Star Arena was more than ready forthe tremendous turnout of ropers.

“The Lone Star Arena crew really makes it easy for theUSCRA and its members to have a roping. The Lone Stararena is definitely the home of the USCRA NationalFinals,” stated Lanham Mangold.

More than that, ropers and their families were able torelax and enjoy what the city of Stephenville has to offer. The entertainment inside the arena spilled over into thecity and ropers had plenty of things to see and do whileenjoying this year’s event.

“A special thanks needs to go out to the Hard 8restaurant for hosting two USCRA parties during thefinals,” added Lanham.

If you were among those in Stephenville, Texas onSeptember 16-19, 2010, you already know the event wassecond to none. The overall excitement of the USCRA andthe upcoming season’s events made for lots of talk andanticipation among this year’s competitors. Of course plansare already underway to make next year’s USCRA Season-ending finale even bigger, so make sure you get yourchance to compete and earn a position. not have missed it for the world. That started me thinking about my family and

how close we are. This year I’ll compete againstthree of my nephews at the NFR. This is a trulyunique situation. I get to go into the heat of thebattle with and compete against some of the peopleI love most in the world. Today I watched myseven-year-old back his pony in the box and chasesome calves across the arena. I can remember whenthese boys were doing that very thing and nowwe’re all roping together at the biggest rodeo in theworld. The only thing that could have made it anybetter is if my other nephew, Stetson, had made it,too. I can see us all being there together next year.

A special thanks to my sponsors for supporting not only me, but also the sport that lets me do what I love.

ast week I was in Houston attending mygrandfather-in-law’s 90th birthday party. The

party was held at the very nice retirementhome where he lives. The room was full of friendsand family who came from all over the UnitedStates. Two men came up and introducedthemselves to me as his fishing buddies. Every yearthe three of them would go to Mexico and fish for aweek, though they hadn’t been in several years. Both men were in their sixties with one fromCarlsbad, New Mexico and the other from Phoenix,Arizona. They had come all that way for a two-hour birthday party. When I told them they didn’thave to do that, they both assured me they would

As a family we are very close and support each other 100percent, but we don’t get in the practice pen together andcompare notes. As close as we are, we are very differentindividuals and rope differently. You have to put in your time andfigure it out for yourself. These boys have learned, as I did beforethem, that there is no short cut to success. It’s a lot of hard work.I guess that’s the one common denominator we all share:knowing it takes hard work and not being afraid of it.Though I’m always proud of their accomplishments, I’m more

proud of the way they carry themselves in and out of the arena.I’m more proud of the men they’ve become than I am of them forqualifying for the National Finals. That’s why I root for them.Because I know their heart is pure and good. That’s what makesme such a big fan.Don’t be mistaken; we’re all going to Las Vegas with gold

buckle dreams and everything that goes with that. But at the endof the year, no matter what happens, we’ll meet for Christmas. We’ll share Christmas dinner and then have our annual familyping-pong tournament.

This revolutionary new calf rope is made from asynthetic manila. It has very little stretch andhas the look and feel of the polygrass, whichmost calf ropers prefer. It is not affected byweather conditions and requires minimum care.

This week at our pastors meeting, there was an assignmentthat was given to all of the pastors. We will be filling out ourown bio’s. One of the questions on the bio is, “What is your

pet peeve?” Seriously, that is such an open-ended question that hasonly a starting point with no end in sight. Pet peeve, just the namegives dignity to the negative. But if that is the question, we will all behappy to give an answer.

“What is my pet peeve?” by Darla Weaver. My favorite pet peeve iswhen Randy leaves the toilet seat up in the middle of the night. Idon’t need to elaborate on my reaction to that one. But my currentone is very close to my heart. It is Christians who sit back andcomplain about government, but are too lazy and complacent to goand vote. What is up with that? Our belief in God’s Word will neverbe maintained in America if we don’t do what is right and use theability and freedom to vote that people have died for.

Who do you vote for? Read a voters guide, see if your electedofficials are voting for what you asked them to, then support them orvote them out of office. “My vote won’t make a difference” is anignorant excuse. “I forgot”— oh, please. “I didn’t get registered intime”— explain that to the next widow whose spouse died so youcould vote. The evening news and commercials will lie like asupermarket tabloid. But what people actually do can never bemisinterpreted.

Several years ago I had the opportunity to go to Russia, just southof Siberia, to minister. While there I learned the heat supply to thebuildings where people live is controlled by the government. Thismeans it is a government decision when the heat to every building isturned on and turned off, as well as determining the temperature ofthat building. Not the people, not a person, but the government. Theyalso do the same thing with the water supply. Imagine having waterin your home only when someone else feels like you should. Not thatRussia is a bad place to live. The people there are just as loyal to theircountry as we are to ours.

Just think about it…… And get off your backside and vote what theWord of God says is true and right.

– I have finally found time to sit down and getsome words on paper

for this month's column. Not toobad since it only hours before themagazine goes to the printer. So –bear with me this month, it mightbe short and sweet!

I have to begin by saying thereis nothing better than spendingmy time with my growing boys.Looking back through this year, Ihave spent a lot of time inside thepractice arena with my boys, aswell as hours on the road going toJr. rodeos. I am not going to evenattempt to add up how much wespent on a new trailer, a couple ofhorses, a new shelter for them alland of course feed, tack, fuel andtruck repairs this year. I will justchalk it up as – ‘For the Cause’

by Ryan Davis

OK because really there is nothing Iwould rather be doing thanspending time with my family.

Jr. rodeo events offer a veryunique setting for families that Ibelieve many other producerscould capitalize on. If a family guygoes to an event, he wouldprobably want to take his family, but in many cases the wife andkids stay home because after afew of these all-day outings, theybecome boring. Admit it. If youwere not competing, after a whileit would be a little tiresome justhanging out at an all day roping.

I believe associations andproducers that would encouragefamilies to attend their events, byoffering extra incentives that wouldkeep them occupied throughoutthe day would be a hit. Now, I

don’t know what these thingswould be, but I bet you could askmy wife, heck ask my kids, to seewhat they might want to do at anevent and I’m sure you would get afew ideas. Sure the dummy ropingand five vendors at the event isfun, but that can only kill about anhour out of the ten hour day theyspend in anticipation of theaccumulated one minute dad isactually competing.

Like I said, I have no idea whatcould be done to make thingsmore exciting for the entire family, but I bet you would get moreparticipation from the dads of theworld if the kids were thereoccupied with something theyenjoyed and moms had a littlemore to do than keep times foreach go round, keep the kidsentertained and their ropingcounter-parts fed and hydrated.

Think about it.Until next time –

I wish you all the best of luck!

THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when 5 strands of low stretch poly fi bers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today.

With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate.
