HOMEGROUP HAPPENINGS!

Over the

next few

weeks, our

class is focusing on

time in our class numeracy

learning. This will range from

telling the time (on

analogue and digital clocks), interpreting

timetables, converting

to 24-hour time and

solving problems about elapsed time. You can support your child at

home by telling the time together (using the

language of minutes

past and to) and asking how much time has

passed, or how much

time until an event.

This week is Education

Week. The focus is on ‘Healthy Mind, Healthy Body’. This week in the Ruby Red Classroom we have been giving special focus to how we take care of our minds – so we are relaxed, calm and happy and how we take care of our bodies and stay healthy. Students made a craft copy of themselves

and identified the different ways they take care of their minds and bodies. Students drew in small illustrations and explained their drawings to us. They were all very different and interesting. Their artworks are on display on our classroom windows. Caleb – I like playing footy against other teams. I like riding my motorbike on my own and going for walks. Vivien – I like walking my with mum and dad, mostly I walk with dad. I eat healthy food like carrots, blueberries and strawberries. I like reading at home. I also like singing, that makes me feel happy. Patrick – I eat vegetables and fruit, they are healthy. I like to play hungry hippos with dad. Layla – I like playing games with my cousins. I eat healthy carrots, tomatoes, watermelon, banana and beans. Running and walking helps with a healthy body.

On the weekend I covered myself in mud. I went to the park. We had fish and chips for dinner. By Paige On Sunday I am going to the

MCG to watch the football. By Jai M On Sunday I went to my uncles house. I rode my motorbike and my cousin’s bike. I fell off the bike and I tried to hold on. By Jai W Can I set up the paint and paint my gnome? “Yes”. Yay. I get the paintbox out and carry it down the stairs. I set up the paint and paint my gnome. Mum and Dad think it’s cute and it took one hour to paint. By Elizabeth On July the 1st it is my birthday. I’m only allowed 5 people invited. By Shyla On Saturday I went to football and Jack

got a goal. On Sunday I cleaned the shed.

Kitchen Garden Cooking

Wow! Kitchen Garden is so much fun. I’m so excited, cooking is my most favourite thing to

do. I cooked Potato Tortillas, they tasted so good, but I could taste the egg and I don’t like egg. Sometimes I

like it with bacon. Teylah Wow! We are going to cook Pumpkin soup. In it is pumpkin, potatoes, vegetable stock, salt and pepper and curry powder with cream to finish off. It tasted disgraceful! Shila ‘Ding! Ding!” It’s the bell

and on Thursday we have Kitchen Garden after recess. Last week we were making Pumpkin Soup. I was in a group with Shila, Deklan, Kael and Natasha. I helped chop the pumpkin and the potatoes. I crushed the garlic clove and we put in the pumpkin soup in the oven. Everyone started getting ready for the Pumpkin Soup and sat down. We ate Kale Chips and Potato Tortillas with the soup. It was delicious! Jessie

VICTORIAN CURRICULM In 2017, Nilma Primary, along with all schools in Victoria will be implementing the changes to the curriculum. We will be reporting to parents against the new Victorian Curriculum. Victoria is known as the Education State, with the intention of placing Education as a number one priority for our children and the future. The Department of Education (DET) website is really informative too. During the course of the year we will be reviewing policies and practices in line with the new curriculum. You may hear new language associated with the student reports too. Keep your eyes on our Curriculum Corner of the newsletter!

SENTRAL—NILMA PRIMARY SCHOOL Student Reporting system

information for parents to access the Sentral Reporting system. All parents will receive a unique password in an envelope next week. The instructions to access the portal are on page 5 of the newsletter. The Sentral reporting system will keep parents up to date with student absences, newsletters and general information regarding Nilma PS. Should you have any queries regarding the access to this portal, please contact the Office. Over the coming weeks we will have several computers available for parents to use. We have lots of parents at school early and would welcome parents to come into the staff room and be shown how to access your child’s portfolio and reports.

STUDENT LEAD CONVERSATIONS ON LEARNING—PORTFOLIO SHARING TIME This year students will also be encouraging students to take a part in the reporting to parents on student achievement process. Parents will be encouraged to come to school on the parent teacher discussion day 15-30 minutes early so that children will be able to access the school SENTRAL information with parents to view their portfolio pieces and have a discussion with their parents on what they have been able to achieve. This will be a new component of our reporting process and we hope this will also support parents to take time to celebrate the achievements of their children. These portfolios will grow as we learn to utilise the SENTRAL system to full capacity. Ms Berkelmans will be on hand in the open learning area to support this new process.

PARENT/TEACHER DISCUSSIONS The Parent Teacher Discussions will be held in the last week of this term as part of our reporting to parents on student achievement. Parents will receive Student Reports on Monday 26th June and then attend Parent Teacher Discussions on Thursday 29th June between 9.00am and 5.00pm. Parents will be able to access the student Digital Portfolios too. All children will be required to attend school on this day. Please complete the attached Parent teacher discussion form and return to school as soon as possible. KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO COME IN up to 30 MINUTES EARLIER than your appointment time—So as to be able to access your child/rens portfolio/s and celebrate achievements in learning.

The booking form will need to be returned by Thursday 1st June 2017. Confirmation of times will be sent back to parents on Thursday 8th June. This year parents will be able to come along early and students will share their online portfolios with parents as part of the celebration of learning. This will mean parents will need to log onto SENTRAL parent portal. The instructions for SENTRAL are located on page 5. If you have any problems please come in and see us. You will need to have an email address though! SCHOOL NURSE

A new school nurse has recently been appointed to our area. We will be receiving a visit in the next couple of weeks. Sarah, our new nurse is going to have appointments with the foundation students and any other students across other year levels. If you would like the school nurse to complete a health check—eyes, ears and general health—please see the Office for the appropriate forms to be completed as soon as possible.

FOUNDATION STUDENTS INFORMATION SESSIONS - 2018 ENROLMENTS Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th June will be our Open Mornings for Foundation students commencing school in 2018. This year we will also be hosting an afternoon information session on Wednesday 14th June from 4-6pm. Could current parents with students starting in 2018 please collect an enrolment pack from the office. If you know of any families who would be interested in a tour of the school, please contact the Office.

MUSIC PIANO LESSONS @ NILMA Miriam has commenced teaching piano at Nilma. Miriam is available on Friday mornings for lessons. Welcome to Nilma Miriam! If you would like your child to learn piano please ring the Office for more information.

MARC Van Hello everyone, This week in MARC Library the Ruby Red students listened to The Frog who wouldn’t laugh, by Cecilia Egan, and coloured in a small booklet about animal tracks. The Emerald Green’s listened to the story White Clay and the Giant Kangaroos, also written by Celiclia Egan, and the Blue and Yellow groups viewed the digital animated text Ngurrara by Tyson Mowarin. Students from grades 1-6 created some wonderful Australian animal pictures, using increasingly complex variations of the grid method of image transfer. The templates that the grades 5 and 6 used were particularly challenging as the grid they were copying from was a muddled-up version of the final image that they were drawing. Helen Collins

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) The week beginning 27th of May to the 3rd of June is National Reconciliation Week (NRW), and to celebrate this Reading Australia is holding a colouring competition that is based on the pictures from the book Mad Magpie, written and illustrated by Gregg Dreise. The competition has two entry categories – F-3 and 4-6. As the competition is open until the 9th of June I thought I will allow all students to complete an entry and then upload the best ones (as selected by the students in each class) to the competition. There are also some local events in Warragul next week if you are interested in attending see page 9

Students in Year 1 and 2 have been learning about subtraction strategies in Whole School Numeracy groups. Attached to the Year 1 and 2 diaries are subtraction strategies they have been working on. When students have understood a subtraction strategies the students moves up to the next strategy on the continuum.

Subtraction Strategies Continuum Subtract from 1-10 - Use pictures or materials (counters) to subtract

Number Line Subtraction from 1-10 - Use a number line to count back

Subtract from 11-20 - Use pictures or materials (counters) to subtract

Number Line Subtraction from 11-20 - Use a number line to count back

Subtracting Zero - Any Number - 0 = that Number 7-0=7

1-2-3)Counting Back - No matter how big the #, counting back 1, 2, or 3 is fast! 9-2=7 8-3=5 3-1=2

Subtracting the Same Number ( Subtrahend) 8—8 = 0

Count the Difference - 8—6 = 2 6, how many more to get to 8

Friends of Ten Strategy 9+1 = 10 so 10-9=1 8+2 = 10 so 10-8=2

The Doubles Strategy 2-1=1 4-2=4 6-3=3 8-4=4 10-5=5 12-6=6

Near Doubles Strategy - 12-6=6 so 13-6 is one more (7) 12-6=6 so 11-6 is one less (5)

Rounding to ten strategy 15—6 = 10-6= 4 5left 5+4=9 Fast Tens Subtracting ten 15 - 10 = 5 Fast Nines If the fact is 15-9, you can think of (15-10=5) and then subtraction 1 more. 15-9=6

Subtracting Tens For subtracting with same number of zeros 130 - 60 = 13 tens - 6 tens = 7 tens Partition Subtraction with no regrouping Partition Subtraction with regrouping Subtraction with positive and negative numbers
