l-Trac Goes live in AugustNew Recreation Management Software goes “Live” in August The City of Longmont purchased the L-Trac software last winter. Since 1988, Vermont Systems Inc (the makers of L-Trac) has specialized in developing fresh software products for managing recreation and parks operations for municipal, county, state and federal military governmental entities. VSI markets and fully supports this software primarily on a national basis. They are committed to providing high-quality application software and responsive customer support for recreation and parks departments and districts.

The City of Longmont has been transitioning into this new software during the summer months with staff training at all facilities. As always, customer service is our number one priority. Please be patient with our staff as it may take a few more minutes than usual as we learn and master the new L-Trac system.

What can be done with L-Trac?• Expanded on-line services: add and update household

accounts, renew passes, class enrollment, reserve park shelters, view league standings, view summaries of family transactions and more!

• Integrated in-person services: daily visits, pass memberships, class enrollments, league enrollments, facility reservations, scholarship administration, concessions and resale purchases

Look who is onboard with L-Trac:Recreation Services ...................................... 303-651-8404Senior Services ............................................. 303-651-8411Firing Range and Training Center ................ 303-651-8507Museum ........................................................ 303-651-8374Children & Youth Resources ....................... 303-651-3751

How YOU can join the L-Trac• Add or update your household information.

If you have a household already in the L-Trac system with a valid e-mail, you can go online to request activation of your on-line account. The first time you log-on you will be asked to change your password and, if you desire, your log-on name. Not web-enabled? No problem! Fill out a household update form located at the front desk at any Longmont Recreation Services facility, the Senior Center, or the Museum.

• Use your current Recreation pass as usual.Your current card works with the new system! If you have punch passes, please allow time for us to transition your punches from the old system to the new system your first time through. While we anticipate few problems with the transition, thank you in advance for your patience while we confirm your pass set up in L-Trac. LONGMONT— Colorado Sen-ate President Brandon Shaffer an-nounced Monday night via You-Tube that he will run for the 4thCongressional District in 2012.The video shows Shaffer addres-

sing a group of friends and familyduring a backyardparty on theFourth of July.“A lot of you

know that wehave been consid-ering a very im-portant decisionin our family,”Shaffer said. “Be-fore we an-nounced our decision to the gener-al public, we thought we’d bring agroup of very close friends andfamily and neighbors and peoplewho have been very supportiveover the years together to sharethe decision that we’ve made withyou first.

“Tomorrow (Tuesday), I amgoing to announce that I am an of-ficial candidate for Congress.”

The announcement was metwith cheers by the crowd and ateasing admonition to “Get back tothe food” by Shaffer.

Shaffer, D-Longmont, had con-sidered running in 2008 butstepped aside for the candidacy ofBetsy Markey, who defeated in-cumbent Republican Marilyn Mus-grave. After current U.S. Rep. CoryGardner, a Republican, defeatedMarkey in her bid for re-election,Shaffer’s name was discussed as apossible challenger.

The 4th CD has been at the cen-ter of a re-districting battle by theLegislature, with the exact lines tobe considered by a judge this fall.

LONGMONT— Every Inde-pendence Day, the biggestbackyard party in town can

be found at Thompson Park.“I’m all about the parades and

stuff, but this is way better,” saidShelley Kunselman, who hit thepark at 7 a.m. to grab a shady pic-nic spot. “I see a bunch of people Iknow, chat with them, and thenmake the rounds again in about anhour. And you can’t beat the mu-sic.”Or the heat. Temperatures rose

through the 90s as the annualLongmont Symphony Orchestraconcert and July 4 community pic-nic went on. Most families huggedthe shade of a tree or an awning;two members of the LongmontChorale briefly passed out fromthe warmth.“No rain this year,” opening

singer Dan Wright told the crowdwith a chuckle. “Remember lastyear?”Without the showers that wash-

ed the park in 2010 and almostcanceled the event, patriotic deco-rations had free reign to take overevery available space and table.Tri-color strawberries, with white

chocolate and blue sprinkles.Cookies shaped like the continen-tal United States. Even a smallwhite “Old Glory” Christmas tree, decorated to the hilt with wood-

block flags, “USA” cutouts and anUncle Sam teddy bear, among oth-er star-spangled touches.“Everyone likes it,” said the

tree’s owner, Kathy Howell of

Erie. “I am starting to reach satu-ration, but for now, I just keepadding things.”Some keep adding people as

well. For Evelyn Josephsohn, thiscame in the middle of her familyreunion, with 25 people descend-ing on Longmont from as far awayas Montana.“This is quite a special Fourth of

July for us,” she said, as the familyset up its picnic table, entered inthe afternoon’s contest as “Red,White and Balloons,” a namethought up by Josephsohn’sgranddaughter. It’s also the young ones, she

noted, who were responsible forthe family’s picnic site: as close tothe cannon for the 1812 Overtureas possible. That same cannonmade a few picnickers jump dur-ing the national anthem, as a mis-chievous Kim Knake set it off intime for “The bombs bursting inair ...”“There seems to be a quick trig-

ger around here,” joked formerMayor Roger Lange, a master ofceremonies for the afternoon.

DENVER— One gay man video-taped for the project shares thathis extended family reacted to hisnews of testing positive for HIV byasking him to use a plastic plate, cup and utensils at mealtime.Another subject, a 14-year-old

boy infected with HIV at birth byhis mother, answers a questionabout future dating. He thinks itcould work “if she could just ac-cept me for who I am rather thanwhat I have.”

Their testimonies now liveamong 173 other interviews re-corded so far by The Positive Proj-ect, a Denver nonprofit organiza-tion dedicated to getting personalstories with information about HIVto those infected, affected and atrisk through a free, digital, onlinearchive.Tony Miles and Dawn Shearer,

both mental health professionals,

launched the project in 2000. Yearsof privately listening to the testimo-nies of HIV-positive clients con-vinced them that a related video ar-chive could be another resource infighting the HIV/AIDS pandemic, which hit the United States 30years ago this summer.Patient confidentiality prevented

them from sharing their clients’stories.“But anyone who participates in

the project needs to be preparedfor the fact that clips of their inter-view could show up on NBC Night-ly News,” Miles said. The duo got interviewees
