SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS• ASU opened the season with a four-game sweep of visiting Xavier, outscoring the visiting Musketeers 20-6 in the series. In their most recent contest, the Sun Devils lost to Nevada at home, 11-5.• The Arizona State offense has put up strong numbers thus far, posting a .317 batting average through five games. They are 17th in the nation in hits and have two starters batting over .500 this season in 1B David Greer (.533) and 2B Andrew Snow (.529).• Junior SS Colby Woodmansee leads the nation with six doubles on the campaign and ASU has a team has hit 17. Woodmansee also leads the team with nine RBIs.• The three weekend starters for ASU (Martinez, Lingos and Todd) allowed just two earned runs combined in 17.2 IP on opening weekend, good for a 1.02 ERA.• After a 35-23 season in 2015 that included a trip to the postseason, the Sun Devils were picked to finish sixth in the Pac-12 this season.• These teams met for a three-game series in the desert last season, with the Sun Devils winning two of three. ASU leads the all-time series 40-11, but they were beaten 11-0 in their most recent trip to Blair Field in 2014.

PITCHING & DEFENSE• After four games, the Dirtbags are tops in the Big West with a 1.50 ERA as a staff with a .179 batting average against. That ERA is 18th in the country and the LBSU staff ranks 20th in the nation allowing just 5.50 hits per nine innings.• The Dirtbags are also one of just eight teams in the country with a flawless fielding percentage, starting the year with four straight errorless games.• Junior Dave Smith picked up the win in his first career start for the Dirtbags, stranding six runners on base in 5.1 innings of work with five strikeouts.• The LBSU bullpen has been nearly perfect this season, throwing 10.2 innings without allowing a run, surrendering just four hits and a walk while recording a save and nine strikeouts. Opposing hitters are batting just .118 against Dirtbags relievers this season.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS• Long Beach State was picked to finish third in the Big West by the conference’s coaches,

PROBABLE STARTERS

POS. PLAYER NOTESC Eric Hutting Started three of the first four games of the season behind the plate.

1B Lucas Tancas Hit his first career HR at UCLA (3-run shot in the 8th) in a 5-RBI game.

2B Jarren Duran Has started his college career on a 4-game hitting streak with 3 SBs.

3B Zack Domingues Platooning with Jeff Nellis at third, but should see more time vs. RHPs.

SS Garrett Hampson Leads team with 7 runs scored after coming around 4 times vs. UCLA.

LF Brock Lundquist Has yet to get untracked, but remains in the heart of the lineup.

CF Tristan Mercadel Has shared time with Joey Sanchez in CF. Can also slide over to RF.

RF Zack Rivera Started all 4 games in RF. Last year’s RBI leader off to a slow start.

DH Luke Rasmussen Batting .333 with 5 RBIs. Moved up to the cleanup spot vs. UCLA.

anticipating a healthy jump from last season’s sixth-place finish. Interestingly, the Dirt-bags were also given three first-place votes, just one fewer than preseason favorite, and defending champion, Cal State Fullerton.• The Dirtbags had two players—junior shortstop Garrett Hampson and sophomore starting pitcher Chris Mathewson—earn Preseason All-American accolades going into the 2016 campaign. It’s the first time a Beach player has earned that distinction since Danny Espinosa in 2008.

A NEW BLAIR FIELD• The 2016 season will be the first played at a modified Blair Field. The multi-phase renovation project began in January of this year with the construction of a new outfield fence that is closer to the batter’s box. The old dimensions of 348-387-400-387-348 have been reduced to a slightly more hitter-friendly 335-380-393-380-330 moving from left to right field.• The new fence is part of the initial phase of the renovations, which will also include a new state-of-the-art batting facility down the right field line, new bullpens behind the outfield walls, a new home clubhouse, grandstand renovations and much more. The estimated total cost of the project is $17 million.

HOME COOKING• The Dirtbags will get a nice long look at their evolving ballpark to start the season, playing 11 of their first 12 games in Long Beach. In total, LBSU will play 33 of its 56 games at Blair Field this season.• That slate of home contests also includes some important matchups. Not only do the Dirtbags host a few marquee non-conference series against Arizona State and Nebraska, they’ll also have the benefit of hosting important Big West matchups. Long Beach State will host the other three teams (UCSB, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton) expected to finish in the top four of the conference standings based on the preseason coaches poll.

LB IN MLB• For the sixth straight year, Long Beach State had more players in the major leagues than any other university. The 2015 total for Dirtbags in the bigs was 16, up from 14 players in 2014.• Branden Pinder became the 46th former Dirtbag to get the call, having a productive year in the bullpen for the New York Yankees.• After the Kansas City Royals claimed the World Series title, Jason Vargas became the second straight Dirtbag to win a world championship ring. Third baseman Matt Duffy won a ring with the San Francisco Giants in 2014.• Playing his first full season in the majors in 2015, Duffy finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting, finishing behind Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs.

WE ARE THE DIRTBAGS• The OFFICIAL nickname of the Long Beach State baseball program is the Dirtbags.

LONG BEACH STATE DIRTBAGS GAME NOTES • FEB. 26-28

@LBDirtbags 10 LongBeachState.com

One of the most respected pitching coaches in the nation, Troy Buckley enters his sixth season as the head coach of Long Beach State. In his first five seasons, Buckley has led the Dirtbags to a winning record in every season and ended a six-year drought with a return to the postseason in 2014.

Last season got off to a promising start as Long Beach State opened with six wins in their first seven games, eventually pushing their record to 9-3 before hitting a rough stretch in the schedule. Buckley’s team played well at the friendly confines of Blair Field in 2015, going 21-10 in home games. On the flip side, LBSU was just 7-16 on the road against strong programs like Arizona State, Cal Poly, Indiana and Cal State Fullerton.

A handful of Dirtbags were honored after the season, led by Big West Freshman of the Year Chris Mathew-son, who was also a first-team All-Big West selection. Mathewson was the first Long Beach State freshman pitcher to earn that distinction in a quarter century. Sophomore shortstop Garrett Hampson, senior pitcher Kyle Friedrichs and freshman designated hitter Brock Lundquist were all second-team selections and first baseman Luke Rasmussen was an honorable mention selection.

In the season prior, Buckley’s Dirtbags posted a 34-26 overall record in 2014, earning an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. There they advanced to the regional final, beating North Carolina twice to reach the final game. Buckley’s squad featured the Big West Freshman Player of the Year in Garrett Hampson and six All-Big West selections. Four Dirtbags from the 2014 squad were drafted with the entire weekend rotation going on to pitch professionally following their final college seasons.

Taking the helm after two disappointing campaigns where the Dirtbags finished lower than fourth in the Big West for the first time since 1989, Buckley took com-mand of a team that had lost its five top hitters and its strikeouts leader from the year before.

Under Buckley’s leadership, the squad lowered its team ERA by more than a point from 4.67 to 3.55, and he led the team to a 29-27 finish against the nation’s third-toughest schedule, just missing a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

That improvement continued in 2012, as the Dirtbags again lowered their team ERA, this time from 3.55 to a Big West best 3.08. Finishing above .500 for the second straight year under Buckley, the team was one game away from clinching the Big West championship, and finished with eight players receiving All-Big West hon-ors, including senior Brennan Metzger, whose first-team All-Big West selection was the first for a Dirtbag since 2008.

The Dirtbags again finished over .500 in 2013 for their third consecutive winning season under Buckley. While playing the 10th toughest schedule in the nation, the Dirtbags posted a 29-27 record and had five players earn All-Big West recognition. Jeff McNeil was the sec-ond Dirtbag selected to the First Team in as many years. The Dirtbags posted their highest team average during Buckley’s tenure with a .266 average in 2013 - 11 points higher than in 2012.

Buckley stepped up as the head coach for Long Beach State after he had made his return as the team’s associ-ate head coach for the 2010 season. That move was on the heels of spending two years as the Minor League Pitching Coordinator with the Pirates. In that position,

HEAD COACH TROY BUCKLEY

Buckley oversaw the overall development of every arm in the Pirates farm system, and also worked in conjunc-tion with the Major League ballclub over spring train-ing development and through the season regarding player movement.

That opportunity came on the heels of the tremendous success that Long Beach State’s players have had both at the collegiate and professional levels. Since Buckley came to Long Beach State in 2001, the Dirtbags have earned five Big West Pitcher of the Year awards, and in 2004 Jered Weaver was named the National Player of the Year after posting a 15-1 record with 213 strikeouts and a 1.62 ERA.

Abe Alvarez, Jered Weaver, Jason Vargas, Cesar Ra-mos, Andrew Carpenter, Brian Shaw, Andrew Liebel, and Vance Worley were all drafted in the first three rounds of the MLB draft after developing their craft under Buckley, and all but Liebel have reached the Major Leagues. Buckley was also instrumental in the recruiting of fellow major leaguers Troy Tulowitzki and the 2008 American League Rookie of the Year, Evan Longoria. Most recently, Jake Thompson (2nd, 2009) and Andrew Gagnon (3rd, 2010) were selected in the top three rounds and are working through the minor leagues.

After his first season at Long Beach State as an assistant coach, the Dirtbags never ranked lower than 28th nationally in team ERA, and ranked in the top five nationally three times. In 2002, the Dirtbags ranked fifth nationally with a 2.99 team ERA as Alvarez was named the Big West Pitcher of the Year, and the next year, Weaver joined Alvarez as co-pitchers of the year as Long Beach State reached the Super Regionals with a 39-21 record. Weaver led the staff in 2004 to a 3.11 ERA, fourth-best in the country as the Dirtbags again reached the Super Regionals.

Following the departure of Weaver, rather than suffer-ing a decline, the Dirtbags posted a record ERA in 2005 under Buckley, leading the nation with a 2.53 mark, and posted a team ERA in 3.64 in 2006 and 3.59 in 2007, the latter being the 16th best in Division I.

Buckley previously served three years at his alma mater, Santa Clara, as an assistant coach. From 1998 to 2000, Buckley was the Broncos’ hitting coach, pitching consultant and recruiting coordinator.

Prior to his work with the Broncos, Buckley was a coach in the Montreal Expos organization from 1996 to 1997. In 1996, he served as the hitting and third base coach for AA Ottawa and in 1997 he was the pitching coach for the Gulf Coast League rookie league Expos in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Buckley was a ninth-round draft pick of the Min-nesota Twins in 1989. He spent three years in the Twins organization, including the 1991 season with AAA Portland. In 1993 and 1994, Buckley was a member of the Reds’ AA Chattanooga team before moving to the Expos AA affiliate in Harrisburg in 1995.

Regarded as one of the greatest catchers in Santa Clara history, Buckley was the 1988 WCC Player of the Year and was a second-team All-American after batting .442 with 82 RBIs. Both marks set single-sea-son records. Buckley drove in a school-record 188 runs and also entered himself among the Broncos’ all-time greats in batting average (.364), hits (234), doubles (47), home runs (35), total bases (390), extra-base hits (84), and slugging percentage (.606).
