Sample 1 Nanjing Cloud-pattern Brocade1

The traditional cloud-pattern brocade is the most famous of the

handicrafts. It got its name for the fact that the pattern on the material is

said to resemble beautiful clouds. Originally made in the Southern

Dynasty, it gradually developed during the Yuan Dynasty and was most

popular during the Ming and Qing Dynasty. There have always been

special institutes in charge of making garments with cloud-pattern

brocade for the imperial family or foreign dignitaries.

Part Four Exercises

1. Reading aloud until you can say it from memory, then translate it

into Chinese.

When making a purchase in the United States, you should be aware

that, in most cases, the price on the label is not the price you pay. You will

have to pay tax also. Usually the tax is between five and ten percent of the

price on the label.

Also, in buying clothes including shoes, you should know that the sizes

are measured differently in the U.S. from the way they are measured in

China where we use the metric system. In these cases, you can always

ask the clerk for help.

3. Read the following passage and decide whether they are true (T)

or false (F).

Travel, whether for business or pleasure, requires arrangements. The

traveler usually faces a variety of choices regarding transportation,

accommodations, and if the trip is for pleasure, destinations, attractions,

and activities. The traveler may gather information on prices, value,

schedules, characteristics of the destination, and available activities

directly, investing a considerable amount of time and possibly money on

long-distance telephone calls to complete the trip arrangements.

Alternatively the traveler may use the services of a travel agency,

obtaining all these arrangements at no cost.

A travel agency is a middleman--- a business or person selling the

travel industry’s individual parts or a combination of the parts to

consumers. In marketing terms a travel agent is an agent middleman,

acting on behalf of the client, making arrangements with suppliers of

travel----- airlines, hotels, tour operators ---- and receiving a commission

from the suppliers.

In legal terms, a travel agency is an agent of the principal, specifically

transportation companies. The agency operates as a legally appointed

agent, representing the principal in a certain geographic area. The

agency functions as a broker, bringing buyer and seller together, for the

other suppliers like hotels, car rentals, ground operators, and tour

companies.

Part Five Social Etiquette

Giving the appropriate gift in a timely fashion not only strengthen

personal relationships in some cultures but also can enhance a company

or personal image. The right gift conveys respect to the individual and by

the same token can convey a company or a personal image of global

sophistication. The main purpose of any gift should be to please and

honor the recipient. If you keep this in mind, you will never produce a gift

that can be inappropriate or, worse, insulting.

Etiquette of Gift Giving

Transaction

Page 32: LOGO Practical Training Ⅲ Shopping.

www.themegallery.com LOGO

Part Five Social Etiquette

One basic rule of thumb in international gift giving: ideally, any

present you give should be made in your home country. Take special

care to make sure that the gift is nor made in a country or region that

may cause insult to the recipient.

Another point that should he remembered: Gifts with company logos

should be used as small token only, not as a major sign of appreciation.

Even when logos are used they should only be placed on gifts of the

highest quality and the best taste. Remember, even the smallest gift

reflects your company’s image and personality. Keep the logo small so

that it doesn’t look as though the gift is nothing more than a company

advertisement.
