    DOING NOTHING

A farmer once left his two sons in charge for the day with fullinstructions on the work they had to do. On his return he saw thetasks undone so he asked What have you been doing, Jeremy?.

Nothing, Sir replied Jeremy. Well, Daniel, what have you beendoing?. Ive been helping Jeremy, Sir.

Now Im sure we all have moments when doing nothing feels like anattractive option. But generally we dont confuse this with having arest and I think we would all agree that in life its not really a goodprinciple. Doing nothing gets short shrift in Biblical writings, too. Weare told often that we need to be alert and ready like Noah, withhis ark, or the maidens with spare oil for their lamps.

This is a getting ready time of the year; getting ready forChristmas....or getting ready for frost and snow....or even gettingready for next years holiday. You will be aware that our churchesare now in a time of vacancy, or Interregnum, following Bobsretirement. And you might be forgiven for thinking of this as a timeof doing nothing. That would be a poor state of affairs. Indeed, in asermon at St. Leonards some weeks before leaving us, Bobincluded a strong reminder that the leadership in a healthy church

(as in any organisation) needs to be spread. We may be withoutTHE leader but we must all play a part in leader-ship to ensure theChristian faith is lived out among us. If youve never consideredyourself a leader dont wait to throw a six, start right away. Take ashare now, during the period leading up to the coming of a new

    leader.

Coming, of course, is what Advent means -the time of gettingready for the coming of Jesus as the babe of Bethlehem, of course,

but also the coming of Christ at the end of time. By and large, wewont be leaving it until Christmas Day to get ready for Christmas. And the Christian message exhorts us not to leave it until the lastminute to give some thought to what happens when we die. Andearlier I hoped we would not sit back and do nothing until the newleader comes. There is much work to do to get ready for all ofthese. Lets be very clear about when to do it. Today. The bestway to plan for the future is to create it. The only way to secure the

future is to care about the present.Sammie

Thoughts and prayers for Advent, Christmas and the New Year

    Psalm 88 verses 6-9

You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.Your wrath lies heavily on me; you have overwhelmed mewith all your waves. You have taken from me my closest

friends and have made me repulsive to them.

I am confined and cannot escape;my eyes are dim with grief. I call toyou, LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you . The NIV Bible

    Prayer for the Month.

Lord Jesus Christ, born an outcast and refugee, in weakness andfrailty, as we rejoice in our celebration of your coming into our world, hear our prayers for all those who have no cause for celebration. Wepray especially for the people of the Philippines still suffering from theaftermath of the recent very severe tropical storms. We pray for thehungry and the homeless , those who lost everything and are withoutshelter, food and water, all whose lives have been shattered bytragedy and disaster. Lord Jesus Christ born to set your people free, bring comfort where there is sorrow and hope where there is despair.Reach out to all who face such situations. Grant the assurance thatyou care, courage to believe in the future and strength to cope withthe present. Living Lord Jesus come again to your world this

Christmas time, through your word , through your spirit, your peopleand in the living presence of Christ and so may the message of theGospel truly be good news for all people. Through Jesus Christ our

    Reported by Ilene Iles

Our President, Dee Bulpitt, opened the November Meetingand welcomed everyone, with a special mention to a visitor Patricia Dennison. The usual Business Meeting took place, reportswere given and Dee reminded those present that it is very importantthat subscriptions are paid in January or February at the latest asthere would be repercussions should a claim be made on W.I.Insurance.

Everyone enjoyed the trip to the Mary Rose Museum once again,we were very lucky with the weather! Val asked for suggestions forour spring trip. Dee then advised everyone that we will not be able tohave our Annual Lunch on the second Wednesday in February asBCOT are closing on Wednesdays but Helen has provisionallybooked for the second Thursday. It was also proposed and passed

that we will NOThave a Meeting in February.

COOKERY COMPETITION Competitors brought their entries to the

Hall in the morning for judging. Dee remarked that it was a wonderfuleffort with 48 entries over 11 classes. The judge thought the standardwas quite high. Best in Show winner Margaret Lee,

Stoney Creek Sentinel Cup for Highest Marks winner Tess Morris.

The Business Meeting closed at 3.20 p.m. Tea followed and the rafflewas drawn.

Falklands War Veteran Recounts Terrifying 100 DaysSteve Carter moved to Stratfield Saye lastyear and has recently published a bookbased on his naval experiences.

April 1982. Argentina invades the FalklandIslands. Young British soldiers, sailors andairmen are sent 8,000 miles to the bottomof the world. Their orders; liberate theislands and return them to the people wholive there.Amongst them was 22 year-old SteveCarter, a Leading Weapons Engineer

Mechanic (Radio) on board the Royal Navyship HMS Fearless. Mr Carters book, 100Days, recounts the terrifying experience ofconflict and the true story of the battle inwhich over 200 of his fellow British

servicemen perished. The book is semi auto-biographical and Mr Carter recounts his ownexperiences through the character Chris Carpenter.

Everything that happens to Chris on the Fearless is derived from myown memories, explains Mr Carter. Stories and anecdotes that arementioned elsewhere in the book are also taken from my memories ofthe 12 years I spent in the Royal Navy. This then is a story about theyoung men who fought in 1982, intertwined with my own actualexperience of that time.Remarkably, Mr Carter dismissed his original intention to write hisaccount of the Falklands War on a purely auto-biographical basis,

fearing that his tale would seem quite boring. Given that his real-

lifeexperiences include being under continuous air attack from Argentineplanes and losing friends when their ship was hit and sunk in a missileattack, this could hardly be considered boring. However, Mr Cartercontinues, in order to tell my story in a way that hopefully interests thereader, I decided to create an additional fictional ship and somefictional characters to enable me to write what is in fact a novel.True story or novel, 100 Days is a heartfelt tale of bravery and lossunderlined by the strong sense of comradeship.100 Days is published by Authors Online and available in ebook andpaperback formats from authorsonline.co.uk; amazon.co.uk,amazon.com. ISBN13:9780755215997.

Filling an awfully big pair of shoes

Having a say in the appointment of our new priest in charge

Its not that long since we waved goodbye to Bob Politt as he headedoff to retirement in Cambridge with Rodyand already the work has begun toprepare the ground for the arrival of hissuccessor. On November 9thsome fortymembers of the churches across thenewly created benefice of Sherfield-on-Loddon, Stratfield Saye, Hartley Wespallwith Stratfield Turgis & Bramley met tomake their contribution to the Benefice

Profile, Role Description and PersonSpecification three documents that willbe important in the appointment process

for our new priest in charge.

Chris Blakeley and Karen West, twomembers of St. Leonards, guidedeveryone through four exercises toanswer the following questions about the

    present and the future:

What are the distinctive strengths of the churches in our benefice?

Of these, what are the top three? What 4 priorities should our new priest in charge be addressing for

us, as current church members? On behalf of those members of our local community andelsewhere who are not here today, what Id really love you to be doing

for me isThe top four priorities for giftsand skills that our new priest in

charge should offerEach question generated muchlively discussion and manyideas as someone

commented on the day, Bobsleft awfully big shoes to be

    filled!

Those tasked with the role ofmaking the new appointmentare confident that they cantake the information gatheredon the day, together with

other views alreadycontributed to put together anattractive picture for potentialapplicants of a benefice thathas committed members, withstrengths that come fromtradition but which is open to

change and growth; and that worships in beautiful buildings.

Many of us spoke of the importance of our new priest in charge beingactive in the local community, as well as those of us of all agesalready in our churches; as someone who can work well with lay andother ordained leaders in the team and a very long list of other ideastoo long to summarise here. Our list of gifts and skills was also ratherdaunting the most popular of which included an active and caringpastor in the community, visible in all parts of the benefice; having aheart for the Gospel in todays culture and able to work

    enthusiastically across all generations.

Over coming months the appointments process will be seeking tomeasure three essential Cs applicants calling, competence andthe chemistry between them and us. Theres a long way to go yetbefore we can announce the name of our new priest-in-charge, but forthe moment its not too late to have YOUR say ahead of the draftingof the BeneficeProfile, Role

Description andPersonSpecification, contact any of theChurch Wardensor editor of themagazine fordetails of how to

    do this.

THANKS TO VOLUNTEERSThe management committee is very grateful to all the volunteers who give

so much time and effort organising and running fund raising events for the

village hall. Special thanks go to Natalie Larner for all her hard work,

especially in selling tickets for events.

VIMALA & THE BAKER BOYSOn Friday 8thNovember the village hall was transported back to the 1940s

as a night club with mood lighting and music ranging from smoochy ballads

to up-tempo swing numbers, all led by Vimala, a truly amazing female

vocalist with an incredible range in both pitch and volume. A great evening

with lots of dancing, the only complaint was that it had to come to an end!

Another successful fund raising event sponsored by Hampshire County

    Update from Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council

Neighbourhood PlanNeighbourhood planning is a new way for communities todecide the future of the places where they live and work. It

enables local communities to have some control over the style andlocation of new houses, businesses, shops and community facilities intheir local area. We are in the process of creating a NeighbourhoodPlan, (meetings take place on the 3rdThursday of every month at7.30pm in the Village Hall), and we need more public involvement, soif you are resident in either Taylors Farm, Sherfield village or thehamlets of Church End or Wildmoor, and would like to have a say inthe future of your community please come along to the meetings. Ifyou would like more information about what is involved then pleasecontact the Clerk.

Meeting datesThe next Full Parish Council meeting dates are 11thDecember 2013and 15thJanuary 2014 at 7.30pm in the Liddell Room.

New Street Trading Consent ApplicationThe Parish Council has been consulted regarding a mobile fish and

chip van in the car park at the Community Centre on Wednesdayevenings for a 3 month trial period, and has decided to support thisapplication.

Jubilee OakHaving recently planted the commemorative Jubilee Oak tree, theParish Council has agreed to commission a circular oak seat tosurround it. This will also be used as a memorial seat so thatresidents can arrange to place plaques in memory of loved ones onthe back of the seat. Half of the cost for this has already been metfrom donations or grants.

Tree damageThe Parish Council is aware of wind and rain damage to various trees

within the Village and has made arrangements to address it.

We Wish you a Merry Tiff-mas

Relate North and East Hampshire & Borders guide to avoiding arguments thisChristmas. The charity is calling on everyone to put relationship maintenance ontheir to do list this festive season.

Relate counsellor Judy said: We all want to have a happy, relaxing Christmas withour families, but in reality it can be a stressful time. Common causes of argumentsrange from money issues over buying presents, to deciding where to spendChristmas and whos cooking the dinner.

Here are Relate NEHABs tips for keeping the peace this Christmas:

Plan ahead. Christmas can be stressful so avoid arguments by planning ahead. Inparticular, talk to your partner in advance about where you plan to spendChristmas so its not a shock to anyone come Christmas Eve.

Dont overspend. For a lot of people this Christmas money will be tight, so try notto succumb to the pressure and spend more than you can afford. Money worriesput huge strain on relationships its not worth it in the long run.

Think of the kids. Who goes where and when can be a huge issue for parentswho have split up and for step families. As hard as it is, try and keep as calm aspossible and keep your childrens best interests at heart.. Talk to your children.

Plan something special. Have a few special events that everyone knows about soyou have things to look forward to. It might be decorating the tree, or hanging thestockings up. The important thing is that you agree that these things will goahead, and everyone makes the effort to get along.

Give yourself space. Christmas can be hectic, and tensions can rise quickly, soplan in a little time when you can be alone to gather your thoughts.

Think of others. Remember family members or friends who might be alone, orwho find the festive period difficult. Just popping in, dropping them a card, orgiving them a call can really help.

Delegate. Share out tasks amongst your family and guests and make a plan of allthe chores. The kids might not like it at first, but it will ensure you dont get to theend of the festive season feeling like a nervous wreck!

Go easy on the booze. We all like to toast Christmas with a nice glass or two, butif there is any tension in your family then steer clear of too much alcohol, it willonly aggravate the situation.

Have fun! Dont forget, its supposed to be fun. Remember its more important tohave a good time together than to make sure everything is 100% perfect.

Relates free Arguments Check-Up is an online questionnaire which helps peopleto find out about their own arguing style and their compatibility with other arguingstyles. Visit www.relate.org.uk/argument-check-up

As Deputy Leader of the Council, Ive continued to driveforward the regeneration of Basingstoke. As you mayhave seen over the summer, I've worked tobringWaitrose and John Lewis to our town and,at theend of September,I turned the first sod for a newNetwork Rail development at Basing View. This newcentre will control all of the signalling for South West Trains and willprovide training to Network Rail staff from across the country excellentnews for our local economy. This helps us make the case thatBasingstoke is a good place to base a business, which, in turn, gives us

the ability to call for greater infrastructure investment.

This is exactly what I did at Conservative Party Conference at thebeginning of October. I made the point that no significant developmentshould come without real infrastructure improvements. I also suggestedthat areas that are positioning themselves for economic growth shouldbe able to get infrastructure improvements up front. These points werewell-received but we shall have to see what is possible, especially on

the latter, in a world where there is not much money around!

A first step was the creation of New Homes Bonus, where HMGovernment said that the parts of the country that had had new housesbuilt should have additional funding to, amongst other things, pay forinfrastructure. The Borough of Basingstoke and Deane has built asignificant number of new houses, so we have accrued some of thisfunding. It has been my mission to ensure that some of this is spent inthe communities like ours that have actually experienced the effects ofmore housing, and I am pleased to say that I have been successful indoing this.

Despite some opposition from Labour and Independent Councillors, theCouncil agreed to my report and recommendation that a LocalInfrastructure Fund should be set up here in Basingstoke and Deane. This means that Bramley and Sherfield, alongside Basingstoke andother parts of the Borough that have experienced development, will, inthe near future, be able to secure funding for small infrastructureimprovements. A separate fund has also been ring fenced for Borough-wide improvements such as forthcoming changes to M3 Junction 6.More details to follow in due course!

    me.

NWR Report December 2013 -Gill Fearon

NWR recently took part in the nationalTelephone Treasure Trail quiz. Phone linesare open for two hours on a chosen evening, during which time we ring for clues and check answers having beengiven two to start us off. The key is to determine the theme early onand this year we identified capital cities as the theme. The clues arevery cryptic and sometimes we struggle to finish, but this time wesailed through it, finishing early which gave us plenty of timeafterwards for a chat over coffee and cake. To give an idea of thetype of clues, our starter clue was: The little King of Skiffle was aneducated man. The King of Skiffle is reckoned to be Lonnie

Donegan, so little gave us Lon and a Don is an educated man, which gave us London. Further clues included, Heavy laundry, which was Washington and What Ramblers do, which was Rome.

Our next meetings before the end of 2013 are A History ofUnderwear evening and our annual Christmas evening when wetake food, sing, do silly quizzes and play silly games! We wisheveryone a very happy Christmas!

In January we will be having a Games Evening-board games that

is! We'll also be planning our meetings for 2014.

    Evergreens by May MacQueen

Our chairperson began with the business part of the meeting byinforming everyone of the arrangements for the Christmas party and

the Christmas lunch. Our party is on Monday 2nd December and willbe a Christmas buffet and entertainment and a Christmas raffle. TheChristmas lunch is on the 9thDecember at the Four Horseshoes at12.30pm.After the business part of the meeting our grey cells were tested with ageneral knowledge quiz and a cryptic chocolate quiz, which everyoneenjoyed. The meeting finished with tea, biscuits and a raffle.
