Brozak Returns to New York for Big LOC Derby Win By Bill Hilts, Jr. It’s been 20 years since Joe Brozak fished in a contest on Lake Ontario. That was when he lived in Rochester, before he moved to the Lone Star State for work. Accepting an invitation from his brother Lenny of Rochester, the skipper of Bullseye Charters out of the Genesee River, the duo headed to deep water and managed to hook into a big king salmon on a Warrior spoon. The fish ended up weighing in at 33 pounds, caught less than a week to go in the derby. The fish held up to win the prestigious competition. The end result was a check for $25,000, earning the Grand Prize of the Derby held August 15 to September 1, 2014. “We had fished all morning and we were thinking about heading in,” said Brozak at Captain Jack’s in Sodus Point, site for the awards ceremony on Labor Day. “It was around noon when the fish hit, with our downrigger set 110 feet down over 517 feet of water. We had been marking bigger fish down deep but we couldn’t get anything to hit … until then.” Fifteen minutes later he had his big fish and they headed to port to weigh in via Lenny’s 10-meter Trojan, “Bullseye.” “We should have lost that fish three times. The fish wrapped the line around the rigger cables but we managed to out-maneuver it.” The spoon was black and silver, with Brozak matching the size to the fish they found in the bellies of earlier fish they caught. Brozak Returns to New York for Big LOC Derby Win

By Bill Hilts, Jr.

Acer Wins Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey Grand Prize with Salmon

It was the luck of the draw … or so the saying goes. For Richard Acer of Appleton, he decided to try a Zara Spook plug behind an E-Chip flasher to take a 31 pound, 2 ounce salmon off the 30 Mile Point area east of Olcott. That fish earned first place in the Salmon Division and ultimately the $2,500 Grand Prize in the Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey Derby held August 16-24 (after a special drawing of all first place winners). Acer was fishing with Larry Bow-erman of Lockport, who caught his own first place Odyssey fish – a 14 pound, 7 ounce steelhead out of Olcott. Bower-man caught it on an old Northern King spoon straight out from his home port. Olcott also produced the first place carp, a monster 36 pound, 9 ounce fish reeled in by Karen Cinelli of Newfane while fishing the harbor area with eggs. She was using an old Zebco rod and reel combo with 8 pound test line to wrestle the fish in and it was amazing that the line didn’t wrap around any of the dock posts. Some fish catches are just meant to be. Over on the Niagara Bar, Roger Turton of Sanborn was the top laker taker with a 22 pound, 4 ounce fish caught on a spin-n-glow in 60 feet of water. James Kitner of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania took first place in the walleye division with an 11 pound 6 ounce fish, also coming from the Bar, on a worm harness. He was

fishing with walleye fanatic Charlie Hoy of Niagara Falls. First place bass was a 5 pound, 9 ounce smallie reeled in by Dave Muir of North Tonawanda. He was fish-ing Lake Erie off Sturgeon Point with his wife Kathy, a previous Grand Prize win-ner in the Odyssey. The cool thing about that catch was the method used – targeting suspended fish 20 feet off the bottom in 48 feet of water with crappie rigs. In the Junior Division, Grand Prize winner was Ethan Long of Batavia with a 24 pound, 3 ounce carp he out-fought from the Oak Orchard River. For both the Adult and Junior Division drawings, it

was Emily the Capuchin monkey making the selection thanks to derby sponsor The Primate Sanctuary. This year’s Fish Odys-sey contest was in memory of Charlie the Chimp who passed away last year. Other top junior fish catchers were Matt Miller of Ohio with an 18 pound Ol-cott salmon; Jennifer Willms of Sanborn with a 9 pound, 10 ounce Olcott trout; Peter Campbell of Niagara Falls with a 4 pound, 11 ounce Niagara Bar bass; Abi-gail McGrath of Niagara Falls with a 1

Any fish containing any foreign materials (including but not limited to water, ice, and weights) will disqualify that fish from consideration for any prize. Black salmon will not be eligible for entry in this Derby. Fish will be examined for gill net marks, bleached or slimy gills, hook and/or gaff marks, fin rot or fungus, freezer burn, clouded eyes, unresponsive flesh – any of which can disqualify the fish.

12. Agrees that the Weigh Master prior to weighing will remove all bait fish or ice visible in the mouth of any fish.

Another Slam for the YoungstersKirkland Brown Wins the GrandSlam

Grand Prize

The Wayne County 5GrandSlam Youth Challenge held its Annual Awards Ceremony at the Sodus Point Fire hall, Saturday, August 23rd

and over 70 people enjoyed the exciting event. The young anglers, who competed during the three month long contest, were rewarded for their fishing prowess; receiving plaques, LNB gift certificates, prizes, and more importantly, applause from the adults and peers attending the ceremony.

Walt Crum was the main attraction for the youngsters when he displayed his “Balloon Art.” Crum has attended this event for the last four years and can twist and turn a balloon into any creature on earth. After a lunch of hotdogs, Dan Gilmore from the Wayne County Federation of Sportsman’s Club, acknowledged the winning youngsters who fished the three month derby. Nancy Wilkes, from McDonald’s of Wayne County,

presented the trophies and plaques to young anglers. Kirkland Brown took top honors in the 8-16 group by winning the GrandSlam Grand Prize. The fifteen year old youngster from Clyde caught all five species of trout and salmon. His total weight was 49.06 pounds. The youngster was presented a plaque and a $200 Visa gift

certificate. The commemorative plaque was framed around a picture of Brown holding his king salmon. Tanner Brown, Kirkland’s twelve year old brother, took second place in the GrandSlam with five fish totaling 48.05…a pound and an ounce shy of catching his brother. There are two age groups; youth 4 -7 years of age and 8 -16 years of age. Within the two age groups there are three separate divisions in the fishing derby. The GrandSlam Division is the cold water fish contest. Catch all five species of trout and salmon in Lake Ontario (Coho, Chinook, brown and lake trout, and rainbow) and you qualify for the Grand Prize. Once you catch all five, you can add to your score with a heavier catch. The Challenge Division has the same criteria, although the five fish to qualify are warm water species; pike, perch, walleye, small and largemouth bass. Species is the third division. The largest fish in any division is a winner. The following youngster took first place in the Species Division. Youth 4-7 years of age; Taylor Smith, Wolcott, 8.12lb. Chinook- Brady Cook, Williamson, 15oz Perch-Jaden Jarvis, Wolcott, 3.03 lb. Smallmouth bass, Jordan Orrange Paton, 5.14 lb. Largemouth bass. Youth 8-16 years of age; Grace DeVelder, Newark, 16.07lb. Brown trout, Zachary Gilbert, Wolcott, 25.08lb. Chinook, Benjamin Schultes, Ontario, 11.15lb. Lake trout, Samantha Levreault, Wolcott, 11.07 lb. Rainbow trout, Connor Kerr, Macedon, 12oz. Perch, James Jarvis, Wolcott, 4.03 lb. Smallmouth bass, Angelo Palazzo, Penfield, 4.12lb. Largemouth bass, Nicholas Morrill, Ontario, 7.12lb. Walleye. The highlight of this year’s GrandSlam Youth Derby was the drawing for a lifetime fishing license donated by The Wayne County Federation of Sportsmen’s Club. Selecting the lucky youngster was Dave Schueler representing the Federation. Every youngster who registered for the derby was eligible for the drawing and the lifetime license went to Jonah Schichtel from Ontario. During the 2014 event 75 young anglers fished the waters of Wayne County and 42 caught and entered fish during the three month event. The Wayne County 5 GrandSlam Youth Challenge is sponsored by the Wayne County Federation of Sportsman’s Clubs and the Wayne County Derby Committee. As always the donors of the GrandSlam Youth Derby are to be thanked for their generous contributions making this promotion a memorable occasion for the youngsters. Complete standings are available on the county website at www.waynecountytourism.com Just click on GrandSlam box.

Lake Ontario Regional Dredging Management Plan

If any of the embayments or channels in Wayne County lost their outlets to Lake Ontario the negative impact would be catastrophic to the shoreline communities. A summary provided by the environmental consultant firm F-E-S, shows the direct recreational economic impact for six specific sites in the county at approximately $9,050,000. A final public information meeting was held at the Sodus Point Village Hall on Wednesday, November 19th and the twenty five attendants understood the ramifications if lakeshore communities couldn’t connect to our Great Lake.Besides Wayne, the Lake Ontario Regional Dredging Management Plan includes the other five counties that border Lake Ontario; Niagara, Monroe, Orleans, and Oswego. Within those county borders the plan is looking at a total of nineteen sites identified as channels or harbor access points. Frank Sciremammano, from F-E-S, highlighted the plan’s recommendations during the hour-long presentation. “The purpose of the plan is to provide safe access for recreational boating across the Lake Ontario shoreline, with equitable and sustaining funding over the long-term,” he said. “Safe navigation through recreational harbor channels provides access to public property, fishing resources and many other water dependent opportunities.” Sciremammano gathered information for the economic survey analyzing 8,136 boat slips, 78 boat launch lanes and 263 fishing charter boats in the six county region. In total the 19 harbors generate $94 million annual, support 1,350 jobs and generate $3.8 million in sales tax to the counties. To come up with some costs the F-E-S proposal recommended four plans.

Potential Plan A: A new or existing non-profit or authority manages permits and operates the dredging equipment. Operations utilize both one hydraulic dredge plus one crane/excavator on a barge with two scows. Potential Plan B: This is the same as Plan A, but includes dredging of the Genesee and Oswego harbors. If respecting the existing restrictive dates it is necessary to add another crane/excavator plus barge and work boat plus two more scows and appropriate personnel. Potential Plan C: This is the same as Plan B but assumes the State reduces the restrictive dates to give approximately three more months of work.

Potential Plan D: Under this plan, a central entity manages permits and lets contracts to private firms for all the dredging operations.

The costs per plan option are:Plan A (excludes Genesee and Oswego) $522,403 $21.59 Plan B (includes Genesee and Oswego, respects existing restrictive dates) $776,143 $6.80 Plan C (includes Genesee and Oswego, relief from restrictive dates) $673,931 $5.90 Plan D (central entity contracts out all work) $648,000 @ $15 $890,000 @ $25 Plan D (central entity contracts out all work) (all harbors) $2,048,000 @ $15 $3,190,000 @ $25

The challenging part of this plan is to obtain funding for dredging the lakeshore channels and harbors. Sciremammano listed six possible ways to secure money for the project.1. Federal funding through Corps of Engineers.2. Voluntary, private funding. 3. County funding. 4. Town funding utilizing Harbor Improvement Districts.5. User fee on a per slip/launch lane basis. 6. User fee through an increase in the existing Boat Registration Surcharge. “I doubt any funds will come from the Federal Government,” Sciremammano said. “The Army Corps will be only looking at the larger harbors like Cleveland and Detroit. Those are big commercial harbors.” Dave Turner, Oswego County Director of Planning, asked if there are any funds available from the Sandy Hurricane relief. “Maybe,” Sciremammano stated, “however those types of funds usually end up down state. With this proposal we need to take care of ourselves.” The organization of such a large task of dredging 19 proposed channels would be best accomplished by a formation of participating counties of a Local Development Corporation (LDC). This entity would strictly focus on dredging, provide bond capability, could share equipment and would allow for complete control by the participating counties. “Any county that doesn’t want to participate in the LDC could contract with the entity and pay a per cost fee for dredging.” The next step for the Lake Ontario Regional Dredging Management Plan is to submit it to the NYS Department of State and if approved it would be forwarded to the appropriate politicians in each county.

On the right is the regular application and below that is the Charter boat application. There are now three levels of Charter boat passes available, the first level is the free pass that covers the Captain and any mate for all three LOC events. This pass was designed for the charter captain who does not fish the events them-selves, but needs to be entered for their clients. UNDER THIS PASS, CHARTER CAPTAIN’S ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR CASH AWARDS. The second pass is a paid Charter Cap-tain’s pass and also cov-ers the captain and any mate in all three events when paying customers are aboard, as above. It is like a regular Season’s Pass and covers the CAP-TAIN ONLY. It DOES NOT cover the mate or anyone else on the boat. Everyone else on the boat MUST be registered for themselves. The third pass is the same as the paid pass but includes a listing on the website so people searching for a captain that is in the Derby can find your business easily.

she’s fished the derby … at just 12 years old. She was also the Youth Award winner. First place in the Salmon Division was worth $5,000. She hopes to use the money to get a fishing boat with her dad. Couch was fishing with Capt. Josh Reinhart of Auburn, who operates Sunrise Guide Service out of Fairhaven. Also on board were Mike Couch (Alexis’ fa-ther), Dave Debejian of Liver-pool and his daughter Aliah. Just after 7 pm, they were troll-ing in to end their day when the big king hit a spin doctor and A-Tom-Mik Pro-Am Live fly 80 feet down over 129 feet of water. Luckily, it only took the young angler about 10 minutes to bring it in to the 27 foot Baha Cruiser named “Lake Raker II.” By the time they made it to the weigh station, they only had eight minutes to spare. Second place in the Salmon Division was Marty Carroll of Rochester with a 31 pound, 8 ounce king caught the final day of the derby. Trolling an e-chip flasher ahead of a Mirage A-Tom-Mik fly 75 feet down over 100 foot of water west of Irond-equoit Bay, Carroll was fishing with Mark and Peter Brozowitz of Webster. Mark is captain of Reel Crazy Charters and they were fishing out of his 36-foot Tiara, “Reel Crazy.” Carroll needed 20 minutes to bring in his prize catch, boated at 8 am. It was the biggest salmon that he’s ever caught in Lake On-tario after fishing many derbies. This time he won a check for $2,000. First place Rainbow/Steelhead was an 18 pound, 11 ounce fish caught off Sodus Point by Steven Allen of Roches-ter. It was his biggest steelhead ever, caught the final weekend of the derby. He was fishing with John Snavely of Victor aboard a 25-foot Wellcraft named “Was-tin’ Away.” The two anglers were trolling in 614 feet of wa-ter north of Sodus Point, using a Michigan Stinger spoon named the Sea Sick Waddler – black and glow with a green eye. It took Allen 15 minutes to bring the fish in. His prize was a check for $2,500. “I used to fish the der-bies all the time … until my two kids arrived,” said Allen. “Now it’s just one derby a year … un-til the kids grow up and become my fishing partners.” Second place steelhead was caught by Patrick Stuck of Wolcottville, Indiana. He was fishing with Capt. Keith Po-

land and Pirate Charters out of Point Breeze aboard his 31-foot Tiara “Snow Pirate.” Also on board were Keith Baumgartner of Muskegon, Michigan; Steve Councell of Edwardsburg, Michigan and Jason Sauder of Columbia city, Indiana. It was Stuck’s first time fishing Lake Ontario and his first fishing derby on the lake. He caught it at 1:15 pm 45 feet down over 90 feet of water on a Silver Streak blue dolphin spoon. It took 20 minutes to bring in, the largest steelhead Stuck has ever caught in the Great Lakes. He earned a check for $1,000. Big brown trout for the contest was a monster, weigh-ing in at 22 pounds, 1 ounce and hauled in by David Hewes of Holyoke, Massachusetts while fishing out of Oswego with Capt. Ron Littlejohn of Altmar and Double Trouble Charters. On the boat was Hewes’ broth-er Clarence III of Jacksonville, Florida and Michael Richard-son of Manassas, Virginia. The trophy fish was also caught the final weekend of the contest. Fishing out of a 28-foot Baha Cruiser off the Nine Mile power plants in Oswego, they were us-ing a diver set-up 325 feet back on a No. 2 setting, pulling a Pro-Troll flasher and an A-Tom-Mik fly over 105 feet of water. The fish hit at 11 am and it took Hewes 20 minutes to bring in. “It was great fishing with my brother to catch this winning fish,” said Hewes at the Awards Ceremony. “This is the first time that I’ve fished with him in 40 years!” After catching a king, coho and lake trout in that order, the captain shouted it was time for Hewes to catch a big brown … which he did. Second place brown trout was caught by David Rowe of Painted Post, a 16 pound 15 ounce fish caught aboard the Rally Killer, a 31-foot Baha skippered by Clarence Crisp out of Point Breeze. They were fishing a mile off the Oak Or-chard River in 120 feet of wa-ter, using a Finger Lakes Tackle spoon 40 feet down on the rig-ger. The spoon was doctored up a bit with special tape to make it his “Rally Killer Special.” Also on board were Billy Roberts of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Dr. Don Donley of Harris-burg. Rowe has never fished the derby before and it was the big-gest brown trout that he’s ever reeled in. And like with all of the other winners, they will be back in 2015 to compete for the big prizes once again.
