LO: To understand that light is needed to see things and that darkness is the absence of light

1. Cover your eyes with cupped hands and press your fingers close together

2. Slowly spread your fingers apart3. What happens? Could you see your hands when your

fingers were close together?4. What allows you to see your hands?5. Where is the light coming from?

The sun and lights in the classroom are SOURCES of light.

A source is a place, person or thing from which something comes from.

E.g. What is a source of water?

Can you see other light sources in the classroom?

http://resources.hwb.wales.gov.uk/VTC/light/eng/Introduction/default.htmMake notes in your notebooks/boards on any light sources you can see in the room.

Are the cat’s eyes and the moon, sources of light?NO! They are not sources of light. They are reflecting light that shines on them.

What light on the street do you think is shining in the cat’s eyes?

The street lights

What light is reflecting off the moon?

The sun

We will go into more detail on reflected light in the next session

Which light source is the brightest during the day?

Listen to this short story about darkness

DARKNESS IS THE ABSENCE OF LIGHT

How does Baby Owl feel about darkness?Discuss in your pairs, how YOU feel about darkness

On your boards, make a list of places that are dark

What light sources can you see outside in the dark/at night?

Discuss in pairs and make a list on your boards

How do you think we go from day to night?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/how-on-earth-do-we-go-from-day-to-night/1594.html.

So does the Sun move around the Earth? No, the world is ROTATING (turns around)

When we are facing the sun, it is daytime and when we are not facing the sun, it is night time.

SO, using this knowledge, for one merit, who can tell me how long it takes the Earth to rotate once?

(CLUE, think about how many hours there are in one day)24 HOURS

What happens to the temperature at night?

It gets colder

Why do you think this happens?

Because the sun is not shining on us and the sun provides us with heat as well as light.
