MULTIDISCIPLINARY CONSULTANCYFOR LNG PROJECTSRAMBOLL PROVIDES INDEPENDENT ENGINEERINGCONSULTANCY SERVICES ON LNG PROJECTSWORLDWIDE

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is oneof the fastest growing means oftransporting natural gas. LNGallows suppliers of natural gas tomeet distant demands in a cost-effective manner. LNG projects call for largeinvestments and specialisedknowledge. Therefore the rightconsultancy is a decisive factor fora successful LNG project. AtRamboll we haveexperience with managing large-scale projects in both the planningand construction phases.

LNG value chain

We provide professional andindependent consultancy services inall areas of LNG. Ourmultidisciplinary approach enablesus to provide all-inclusiveconsultancy services.  Our services cover the entire LNGvalue chain from gas produced fromthe field to gas conditioning, LNGstorage, LNG transport, LNG re-gasification, gas transmissionsystems and underground gasstorage services.

Market and economic studies

Ramboll has an extensive trackrecord in market and economicstudies for the oil and gas industry. Our studies provide facility owners, investors and other stakeholderswith the necessary basis for makingthe right decision.

Site selection and environmentalassessments

Selection of the optimal site for anLNG terminal should be based onthe interface with existing facilities, existing gas transmissioninfrastructure, risk assessment andenvironmental impact analysis. Ramboll has extensive experiencewith conducting infrastructure, risk and environmental assessmentsin relation to all kinds of onshoreand offshore oil and gas projects.

Process and mechanicalengineering

Ramboll’s core competencies withinnew LNG projects include allservices from initial early-phasestudies through conceptdevelopment to detalied design andimplementation of projects.  LNG projects are sensitive todecisions made early in the process.

Not all technologies are suitable forall climates, some technologies aremotion sensitive and typicallythere are significant differences inthe heat efficiency. The liquefactionand re-gasification processesrequire significant amounts ofenergy, and the differences inenergy consumption betweendifferent technologies have a greatimpact on the overall profitability ofthe facilities. Ramboll is one of few independentengineering consultancies that iscompetent to access theprioritory design of others, and weare accustomed to evaluatedifferent technologies and life cyclecosts in the early phases of LNGprojects. The processes set high demands forfacilities, equipment and choice ofmaterials. Ramboll offersconsultancy on both theliquefaction and re-gasificationphases.

Selecting types of LNG facilities

LNG can be liquefied onshore oroffshore. It can be stored and re-gasified offshore on FSRUs(Floating Storage and Re-gasification Units), SRVs (Storage

and Re-gasification Vessels) orin settings where, for example, theLNG is stored on 2nd hand vesselscombined with onshore re-gasification facilities. This is also arobust concept to keep initialinvestments down.

Civil engineering

Ramboll is one of the largestcompanies in Europe within civilengineering, geophysical analysis, geotechnical engineering andfoundation design and we hold vastexperience in steel and concretestructures. With a multidisciplinary approach,we handle all civil engineeringaspects of an LNG project fromplanning, initial investigation, designand tender, to implementation, inspection and supervision.

Ports and marine engineering

Most LNG facilities will be placed inconnection with jetties or existingport facilities. Ramboll is anindependent and leading providerof professional expertise across thespectrum of port planning andengineering, coastal engineeringand engineering of marinestructures.

 LNG storage tanks

Ramboll provides services withinthis specific field of engineeringfrom preliminary design andFEED to detailed design of the pre-stressed concrete outercontainment tanks for LNG storage. We carry out advanced analyses, civil design work and geotechnicaldesign work, and we haveexperience with the relevant designcodes and material requirementsassociated with LNG storage tanks.

Risk and safety

Safety is a key concern on allonshore and offshoreinstallations. Management of riskand safety is an integral part of ourLNG service portfolio as well asindependent third party reviews ofprojects and installations.
