“Root of joy is gratefulness”
~Dave Stendl-Rast
Parent conferences are coming soon in November. I hope that parents will take this important time to hear all about your child’s learning. We know that it is important not only for the classroom teacher to be able to speak about the learning in the classroom, but it is more effective for a child to be able to speak about their competencies. Statements and knowledge of what each child can do is an integral part of the redesigned curriculum. Having children engaged in reflective thought and conversations with their peers and teachers is something that parents will be seeing and hearing more about. Learning, we know, is never stagnant but continual and happens at different times and rates for each child. An important question that parents can ask at this conference is how the home can support the learning for their child. Teachers will be more than willing to support you too with this important next step. Many teachers have established reading challenges/homework for students to practice and record. We know that both reading to and with a child is valuable homework and time spent together. Especially when a parent asks some predicting, comprehension, and questions about how a child can relate something in their life or experiences to what is being read. Homework is valuable when it is an extension or practice of what is being taught in the classroom. Homework can become a stressful situation for families when it is not. Geoff Johnson wrote an interesting article on August 25 in the Times Colonist that is definitely worth reading. I will also post this article for parent reference on our parent bulletin board in the foyer. I'd like to thank our PAC parents who worked so diligently on putting up the painted posts that were created by families last June. This creative and friendly element has really added a special dimension to our newest play space. Hopefully more posts and additional items will be created in the future and added too. Halloween is a very exciting day in this month. This year it falls on a Monday. With so many school and classroom activities happening and whatever else your family chooses to do, keeping things quiet and calm can be a challenge. We are all practicing some strategies in our classrooms as to how we can regulate our bodies and thinking so we can be an active listener and participant with our learning. Many of these Mindful Moments happen throughout the day in classrooms. This might be a perfect time for your child to share with you what he/she uses and perhaps you might find practicing these strategies at home useful too, next week. Enjoy your Halloween activities but keep safe!

One benefit of using your
newsletter as a promotional
tool is that you can reuse
content from other marketing
materials, such as press re-
leases, market studies, and
reports.
While your main goal of dis-
tributing a newsletter might
be to sell your product or ser-
vice, the key to a successful
newsletter is making it useful
to your readers.
A great way to add useful
content to your newsletter is
to develop and write your own
articles, or include a calendar
of upcoming events or a spe-
cial offer that promotes a new
product.
You can also research articles
or find “filler” articles by ac-
cessing the World Wide Web.
You can write about a variety
of topics but try to keep your
articles short.
Much of the content you put
in your newsletter can also be
used for your Web site. Mi-
crosoft Publisher offers a
simple way to convert your
newsletter to a Web publica-
tion. So, when you’re finished
writing your newsletter, con-
vert it to a Web site and post
it.
