There are basically two reasons to anchor.

First is to attach your boat to the bot-tom of the lake as you enjoy lunch, fishing, or spend the night. In other

words, to enjoy your nautical experience. The second reason is because you have

an emergency that requires you to keep your boat in its present position. For either reason, you need to know the best tech-niques to follow and then practice so the procedure goes off without a hitch.

What type of anchor is best? That depends a lot on your boat,

what kind of anchoring you do and the make-up of the bottom. There are several different types of anchors, including the

plow, grap-nel, mush-room and Danforth. But the techniques cited apply to all anchors.

When buying your anchor, the merchant should have a chart which will recommend the size of the anchor relative to the size of your boat. I suggest if you do a lot of anchoring, you purchase one for the next larger size boat than

the one you have. It’s wise to attach 6 to 23 feet of chain

between the anchor and the anchor line. (The anchor line is called a “rode”). This puts ad-ditional weight on the anchor and makes “get-ting a hook” easier and dragging less likely.

The useable length of the rode should be at least as long as 10 times the depth of the water you anchor in. Normally you want the

WATER SAFETYBY JANE TEASLEY

Anchoring

8 | Lake the Magazine Lake the Magazine | 9

scope to be 7 to 1. That is, the depth of the water times 7. So if you have 100 inches of rode, you can an-chor in water that is 14 inches deep and have a scope of 7 to 1. If you are just anchoring for a short time and weather good, it’s OK to reduce the scope to 3 to 1 or 5 to 1.

Here is a good anchoring procedure.Choose your site by motoring around where you want the anchor to be, to determine if the water depth is

okay. Also, when your boat swings around the anchor, due to wind or current changes, the boat will not go aground or hit something.

Next, cruise up to your chosen anchoring spot heading into the wind. Come to a complete stop and slowly lower the anchor. Do NOT throw it! Throwing may tangle the rode with the anchor. Hint: Be sure the anchor is tied to your boat prior to lowering. My family has contributed several anchors to this lake throughout the years.

Once the anchor is on the bottom, slowly back the boat until there is about three times as much rode out as there is depth. Holding the rode in your hands you will be able to feel the anchor as it drags over the bottom. When it “sets”

firmly into the bottom, you will feel that also and the boat will stop

After the anchor is set, let out the rode some more to get the correct scope. You may then want to “tug” on the rode by adding a little reverse power to be sure you have a good hook. Then attach your end of the rode to a cleat on the boat.

It’s very important to know how much rode you have in the water. That can be done by previ-

ously marking your rode every 10 feet with duct tape or some other

marking. Then remember how many markers have gone into the water.

It’s also a good idea to look at several land objects, like special trees, rock formations or buoys. If these objects

stay in their position relative to the boat, then you are not dragging. If they change position, you may need to re-set the

anchor.Experience is the best teacher, so next time you are on the water, practice the procedure so that when you need it you won’t have to practice!

So……Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh….Farewell to foreign shores….We sail at break of day….day….day……...You get the gist………

The old April adage is April showers bring May flow-ers. Well, I can’t speak for the entire Lake Gaston region, but I believe many would like to scale back significantly on the showers after the extremely wet

winter we’ve experienced this year.We all look forward to the May flowers, but even more so

to the flurry of second homeowners and visitors who return to the Lake Gaston region! Even though Lake Gaston is active all year round, the selection of activities certainly increases in spring and summer.

What could be finer on Sunday afternoons in springtime than a fantastic game of cornhole with your pals? The Corner Lot at Lake Gaston, 3358 River Road in Henrico, N.C., will of-fer cornhole at 4 p.m. every Sunday afternoon beginning April 3. There is a nominal $10 buy-in per team, and proceeds from the tournaments will go toward purchasing supplies for local schools.

On Friday, April 8, and Saturday, April 9, at 7 p.m., travel to The Colonial Center for the Performing Arts, 220 N. Meck-lenburg Ave. in South Hill, Va., for a production of “Alibis,” written by Peter Kennedy and performed by Park View High School Drama. When famous actress Primavera Donna throws a party and winds up dead, it’s up to the guests to figure out who did it and how it happened, and why the hired help is so annoying. As the storm outside rages and the body count mounts, the guests must contend with interruptions, shocking revelations, tacky special effects, and the arrival of a mysteri-ous visitor.

Lakeland Theatre Company, 411 Mosby Ave. in Littleton, N.C., will show on April 15, as they do every year, that Lake-land CAREs for John 3:16! Many of your favorite Lakeland performers will gather to share their talents with you, all to benefit The John 3:16 Center in Littleton.

There is something for every taste happening on April 16! That morning at 10 a.m., come to The Corner Lot, 3358 River Road in Henrico, and take part in a 5K Hope Run (Walk) to benefit Alzheimer’s research. Bring your family and friends along to shower you with vibrant colors along the course. Registration packets are available at Norton’s at the Lake, the restaurant portion of The Corner Lot, on The Corner Lot’s Face-book page or on-site the day of the run. There will be music, fun and awards following the event.

Don’t miss the final show of the Meherrin River Arts Coun-cil’s 2016 season, featuring a blow-out concert with country music superstar LeAnn Rimes at the Emporia Greensville Per-

forming Arts Center. According to the LeAnn Rimes Facebook page, “LeAnn Rimes has sold more than 44 million albums, won two Grammy Awards, three Academy of Country Music Awards and 12 Billboard Music Awards. Rimes is the youngest recipient of a Grammy® Award, and was also the first country recording artist to win in the ‘Best New Artist’ category.” For tickets and information, call 434-634-6001 or visit www.mrac-arts.com.

Are you a horse lover? Well, look no further than the True Story Acres Benefit Trail Ride for the entire weekend of April 15-17. The ride in-cludes amazing trails, camping and a wine tasting at the fantastic Rosemont of Virginia Vineyards and Winery. Proceeds benefit the Lake Gaston Volunteer Fire Department. For more information, contact Christy at 434-917-2467.

Lakeland offers more entertainment in the month of April by featuring local favorite Alan Stallings at 8 p.m. on the evening of April 23 in the Cabaret Theatre. Come hear some good ol’ rock-n-roll, some country, blues, rock-a-billy and Roy Orbison, as heard through Stallings’ rich, throaty voice. Call 252-586-3124 or visit www.lakelandtheatrenc.org for event and ticket information.

These exciting events are just a few raindrops in the shower of activities April brings to the Lake Gaston region. Enjoy music and dining at your favorite eateries. Be on the lookout for local festivals in the quaint small towns around the region. Sign up for the Chamber’s twice weekly newsletters to keep your calendar up to speed!

WatersView Restaurant at Lake Gaston has with a new owner, and with that, a new look.

Billy Benson, owner, said from the parking lot to the dock, many of the features have been reworked after he took ownership in September 2014.

“This was all overgrown,” Benson said of the parking lot. “We worked it out, cleaned it up completely, and it’s got a much more beautiful look.”

The dock’s boarding have been replaced, as well, he added.

“A lot of it was rotted,” he recalled. “We redid all the

woodwork, we redid that retaining wall back there, put all the riprap up, put the wood along the wall and all the riprap.”

In addition, the dock was widened. The downstairs section of the restaurant now features an updated bar.

These changes and more started last summer.Benson himself is a Virginia native, but said he fell in

love with Lake Gaston.“I just started coming to Lake Gaston. I purchased the

property here, just coming on the weekends, then I just decided ‘Well, I want to do something at Lake Gaston,” he said. “‘I want to get into business at Lake Gaston

Benson already owns a manufacturing business in Virginia, but said he saw the potential of building up near the lake, as well. So he wanted to create something which would draw the people of Lake Gaston.

Christina Wells, executive director of the Lake Gaston Regional Chamber of Commerce, described WatersView as a ‘must do’ for visitors.

“What I love about WatersView’s design is how the new owners began by sprucing up the wonderful features that the building already had, such as the log cabin exterior and the blue metal roof, which blend so seamlessly into the Lake Gaston shoreline,” Wells said. “There have also been some magnifi-cent remodels, such as the piers, docks and boathouses, the carefully stacked rip rap, and the fantastic Welcome to WatersView sign that greets guests as they drive across Eaton’s Ferry Bridge or arrive at the restaurant via boat. Ev-erything about the restaurant just feels right.”

She described Benson, and his business partner Ali Porter, as well as manager Jay Dunegan, head chef Josh Davis and the kitchen staff, servers, bartenders and greeters, as able to provide “top-notch” service.

Lake Gaston has various locations to eat, Wells noted, and she said WatersView is a premier lakefront dining experience.

“Needless to say, Lake Gaston regional resi-dents and visitors have charted their courses for delectable dining coupled with the ambience of amazing main lake views and sunsets for quite some time,” Wells said. “Try WatersView once, and you’ll become a regular.”

Evans’ passion helps make Valley repair

business thrive

The lure of the open water during a childhood spent on Lake Gaston first drew Steve Evans to boats.

He’s ended up making them his life.“In 1968, my parents bought a lot on

Lake Gaston, and in the late ‘70s, they built a house there,” Evans said of the home, which he still has today. “I grew up waterskiing and boating. If it would float, we could try to ski behind it. Still, to this day, I’m still barefoot skiing.”

As a child, he visited with a man known as the top boat mechanic in the area, and never forgot about it.

“I just love being around boats, being on the water with boats,” Evans said.

He worked at the family’s auto parts store initially, but switched gears in the mid 1990s.

“My heart was in boating,” he added.Evans and his wife, Sarah, now own

Fred’s Boat Sales and Service, 4110 U.S. Highway 158, just west of Roanoke Rap-ids. This business was started June 14, 1998, by Fred Coates as a mobile boat repair on lakes Gaston and Roanoke Rapids. To get started, Coates purchased a 20-foot boat and customized it to carry tools and parts. Eventually he found the need for a shop, which grew at its cur-rent location.

“He started with nothing but a service boat at the lake, and after three, four years, he needed a facility, basically. He then got into boat sales.”

Evans said he started working for Da-vis Marine in 1995, and continued there until that business closed in 2012. He

then went to Fred’s, and purchased it in March 2013. The motto still is “We make house calls.”

He carries new and used boats — financing is available — and Yamaha and Mercury motors. Evans also operates a fully stocked boating ac-cessories store.

“I would love to just stay here, and grow my business,” he said.

Fred’s has two factory certified technicians, Charles Glenn and Evan Smith. Between them, they have 50 years of experience.

Glenn’s son, Matt, works full time as a Roanoke Rapids firefighter, and offers lakeside repair service when not on duty. All the men work together with a sense of easy camaraderie and a few laughs here and there.

“If we don’t do anything else, we have fun here,” Evans said.

Charles Glenn, left, and his son, Matt, a Roanoke Rapids firefighter, both work at Fred’s Boat Sales and Service.

Steve Evans, owner of Fred’s Boat Sales and Service, has a store with boating supplies and a line of Yeti coolers.

Spring is in the air and I am ready to dig and plant in the garden. I have often said when I weed my garden I weed my mind. We are blessed to live in an area that has four seasons of beauty and garden

that have few open flowers. You want plants that are putting their energy into developing strong roots, stems and foliage. The flowers will come! Seeds are another excellent option for annuals. I have better results sowing Zinnia seeds. The plants are sturdier and have more blooms for cutting. Don’t forget to pick up a few herbs such as basil and parsley. Tuck them in your flower beds or plant in pots for added interest.

Prepare the soil by adding organic matter, such as peat moss, compost or rotted manure. Transplant in the evening or on a cloudy day. The cool weather will be easier on you and the plants. After planting, water well and help the plants retain moisture by spreading a layer of mulch. Water

as needed; remove spent blooms and your plants will thrive.Bearded iris (Iris Hybrid) — named for the fuzz on their

hanging petals, they are stalwarts of spring gardens. In ad-dition to old-fashioned favorites, newer varieties are bred to rebloom after a summer rest period. These elegant plants are available in a variety of colors and like daffodils pair well with other spring perennials.

Bearded irises have rhizomes (fleshy roots) that should be partially exposed, or thinly covered with soil in hot cli-mates. Purchase potted varieties for spring planting. Select a spot that gets at least six hours of sunlight per day. Add or-ganic matter to improve drainage. Don’t trim iris leaves until they turn brown. Left alone, they will provide nice texture that complements other perennials. Once the bloom fades cut the flower stalk down to the rhizome to discourage rot.

Few perennials can match the amazing show, sweet fra-grance and easy care of irises. Iris comes in a wide range of colors, both solid and bicolor. Branched flower stalks range in height from 8-inch miniatures to 48-inch giants. They all make excellent cut flowers.

Garden tasksApril is the ideal time to prune evergreens and divide

perennials such as Phlox, Daylilies, Iris, Chrysanthemums and Daisies.

Plant new rose bushes before new growth starts and buds swell. Fertilize Hybrid Tea Roses prior to buds beginning to bloom. Using a systemic fertilizer will help prevent insect

infestation later in the summer, as it feeds your roses. Herb garden — Direct sow Dill seeds and with succes-

sional sowings every 3-4 weeks all summer you will have a regular supply of dill. Plant Cilantro, Flat Leaf and Curley Parsley but wait until the end of April after danger of frost is gone to plant Basil. Divide Thyme to prevent it from getting woody. Tarragon, Marjoram, Chives and Lemon Balm can be divided in April.

Carol Moseley learned the love of gardening from her mother and father. Both were avid gardeners; his focus was vegetables and hers were flow-ers and shrubs. Carol has been gardening since 1969, and in 1999 completed the Master Gardening Training Course through the N.C. Coop-erative Service. She said she was very fortunate to learn how to grow and use herbs from her dear friend, the late Diane Morris, the Herb Lady

Spring is finally here. As the cold weather makes an exit, we are surrounded by trees showing new growth and the outdoors turning green once more. Mother Nature will soon be in full bloom.

This month I have a wonderful “story from around the world.” I would like to take the opportunity to introduce Sorin Savin, a good friend of mine, whose story comes all the way from Romania. Sorin was born in Romania and now lives and works in England.

Sorin was very interested when I happened to mention I write a food column for a local magazine here in Lake Gaston. He was more than happy to share a food experience of his own and was kind enough to share his grandmother’s wonderful stuffed cabbage leaf recipe, and his grandmother’s technique for making it. I hope you enjoy the recipe and try it for yourself. I recently made it myself and it turned out to be amazing.

Sorin’s storyEvery country can brag about the food that represents them

but I can bet you that none is compared to my grandma‘s stuffed

cabbage, or “sar-male” as it is called in the Romanian language. It is called stuffed with a very good reason … yes m’am!!! There is not a single time I can remember going to my mother’s house in the countryside and not leave “stuffed” with this delicious food. Everyone has their childhood favorite foods where the smell alone can transport you to a different place and time. Stuffed cab-

bage brings me to my childhood place at the kitchen table at my grandmother’s house specifically during the holidays.

I find it to be true that if this dish was prepared at any other time during the year you could have sworn it didn’t have the same taste. Let me describe a little of my grandma’s recipe, maybe your tongue will start feeling the taste after reading these lines.

First, you need a house full of relatives and neighbors; our tradition says the food will be delicious only if it shared with others. Next you need the cabbage; this is the star of the whole show. The cabbage can be tricky because in winter and spring grandma would have to use pickled cabbage. Dur-ing summer and autumn we were able to benefit from a fresh cabbage from the garden. When choos-ing a cabbage, it is impor-tant to pick one of medium size with leaves that are not too large. Of course, fresh is always better but if the cabbage has been pickled be sure to leave it overnight in a bowl with water to get the salt out.

The filling … well, this is where the story gets good. You need one pound each of ground pork and beef mixed together, about three or four yellow on-ions, 10 1/2 ounces of rice, three spoons of tomato juice, sunflower oil and depending on one’s taste, salt, pepper, savory, sweet paprika. My grandma would mince the onions and let them cook in hot oil for a couple of minutes until they would turn golden. Next, she would mix in the pot, the well-washed rice with the cooked onion and let them cook for 1-2 minutes. After that, she would add tomato juice and 1-2 glasses of warm water. Everything would then be boiled again until the rice expanded and the water level decreased. The mixture was left to cool down. After cooling down, the meat would be added in, along with salt, savory, pepper and sweet paprika. You can add dill as well, especially if it’s fresh. It will give a heavenly taste to the food.

After she mixed all the ingredients together, it was time to stuff the cabbage and create the “sarmale.” She would take a

cabbage leaf and put it on the palm of her hand. With the other hand she would take some of the mixture, the size of an egg or smaller, and place it on the middle of the leaf. Rolling from left to right, the leaf and the ends were bent to the inside of the mixture, creating a nice wrap for the mixture.

In a large saucepan, she would place some chopped cab-bage leaves on the bottom to prevent overcooking. She would prepare this in advance by chopping the cabbage leaves and mixing them with tomato juice, oil and savory to taste. Grand-ma would then set the “sarmale” one by one in the pot, leaving as little space between them as possible. When the bottom of

the pot was full, a second layer is added and then a layer of chopped cabbage leaves would cover the top. Once all the “sarmale” and chopped cabbage were in the pot it would be filled with water until all the leaves were covered.

Everything would cook at low heat for 2-3 hours. The level of water will drop but do not panic, let it drop … it

is supposed to happen. The food can be eaten hot or cold, but always served with

sour cream … and with relatives, of course.
