Today, we have GPS or map applications to help us find places. It is easy
to use a GPS or map application, but sometimes we need to ask for
directions or give directions.
There are common words and phrases we use to give directions. Study the words and phrases above:
Section 2: Getting around Mt. SAC
Mt. SAC is a large community college in California. There are many students, and it can be difficult to find your
way around. So, it is important to know how to ask for directions or help other students with directions. Here is
a map of the school (http://mtsac.edu/maps/). Try finding the map on the website, also.

Activity 1: Organizing Directions - Look at the map of Mt. SAC. Can you find Building 30 and Building 77?
ESL Pre-Level, Level 1, and Level 2 classes are in Building 30. In the Language Learning Center (LLC) you can
practice your English on computers and meet with ESL tutors. The LLC is in Building 77. The directions below
explain how to get from Building 30 to the LLC in Building 77. Put the directions in order. Write the correct
number next to each step. Step 1 is done for you!

Step Number Directions to get from building 30 to building 77.
Next, turn right at the light onto Walnut Avenue.
Continue to go down the stairs until you reach the bottom.
Then turn right and enter the doors on your left.
The easiest way is to exit Building 30 and go toward Bonita Drive.
When you get to the new buildings on your left, turn left and go down the stairs.
After that, continue straight until you pass the driveway in front of buildings 66 and 67.
Finally, go through the first door on your left to enter the LLC.
Section 3: Tips and Practice for Giving Directions
Here are some helpful tips on how to give directions to others.
1. Begin with an introductory phrase:
a. The easiest way is to . . .

2. Use short phrases with the imperative form. Speak slowly and use very careful pronunciation. For
example:
a. Go straight.
b. Make a right.
c. Turn left.

5. Use landmarks. Landmarks are buildings or things on land that are easy to see and recognize.
Landmarks tell the person what to look out for. The landmarks are underlined in the example below:
When you see a large clock, make a left.
At the library, turn right.
Turn right on Temple Ave. You will see Mt. Sac on the corner.

Section 5: Practice with a Tutor!
After completing Section 4: Self- Assessment, meet with a tutor and give this completed SDLA to the tutor. To
make sure you understand how to give directions, the tutor will ask you to use your phone or computer and
give directions from Mt. SAC or your home to your favorite restaurant/store.
