Nobody wants his weaknesses, mistakes or vanity to be made public, least of all by a jester. Till Eulenspiegel knew no limits when he revealed the deficienci-es of late medieval society.

He exposed complacent citi-zens, corrupt noblemen and the church alike. The myth of Till Eulenspiegel and his numerous pranks has been constant for

hundreds of years, even though the evidence is hard to find. The earliest publication of the Eulen-spiegel book, written by author and toll collector Herman Bote, dates from 1510.

According to this book, the joker was born in Kneitlingen in 1300 and died in the Hospice of the Holy Spirit in Mölln in 1350. He was a restless soul who had al-

ready played his mischief in Italy and Poland before finally coming to Mölln.

Till made Mölln the Eulenspiegel town and here, he and his subtle humour became immortal. The town honours its most famous citizen and when in Mölln, you could meet Till almost anywhere. The town employs Till who still uses hearty words to hold a

mirror up to locals as well as tourists.

Mölln‘s museum collection was established in 1889 and as such it is the oldest in the district. In two historical buildings at the Market Square, you will find the Town Museum, which holds spe-cial exhibitions, as well as the Till Eulenspiegel Museum.

Both buildings are part of the town‘s history and have been carefully restored.

The Eulenspiegel Museum is si-tuated in a half-timbered house dating back to 1582 and shows various aspects of the life of Germany‘s most famous jester. Visitors can learn about Till Eu-lenspiegel and his most famous pranks handed down from folk tales. They can even watch his newest acts of mischief on Till‘s own TV channel „Till-TV“.

The Town Museum is located in the historical Town Hall. Till‘s Museum is

just across the Market Square

Interestingly, the fact is that Till and his pranks live on in Mölln to this day...

The history of the town of Mölln is portrayed in the historical Town Hall. The second oldest Town Hall in Schleswig-Holstein highlights important moments of Mölln‘s history. Throughout the centuries, Mölln has been located along major trans-

port routes. The key factor of the town‘s prosperity was the Lübeck‘s salt trade on the Steck-nitz Channel from 1398.

A variety of short films depict the salt trade, the first use of the chamber lock on the Elbe-Lübeck-Channel in 1900, and the life of the salt master from Lüneburg in the 16th Century.

The town‘s silver from the 16. century and the Feurgräfenpokal from the 17. century are proof of former prosperity

The interactive exhibition at the Eulen-spiegel Museum is very informative on the life of Till

The medieval rooms of the Town Hall are often settings for special exhibitions and events.

Mölln was mentioned in a do-cument for the first time more than 825 years ago, in 1188. According to old texts, the Sla-vic town name means „place near murky water“. This may have been created by the great number of salt transports which left the water murky. Howe-ver, nowadays the town shines with the typical red of northern

Germany‘s clay bricks and the flair of cobblestone pavements in the small alleys, as well as many architectural splendours.

Mölln was given town privile-ges by Lübeck in the 13th Cen-tury. At that time, the St. Ni-colai church was built, as well as many residences around the historical Market Square and

Around 1700, the Duchy of Lau-enburg belonged to the Duchy of Braunschweig, the Kingdom of Hannover to France and then to Denmark for about 50 years. Only after Austria and Prussia had defeated the Danes in 1864, did the Duchy of Lauenburg and Mölln became part of the Prus-sian Schleswig-Holstein.

In 1851, the railroad Lübeck-Büchen was built, connecting Mölln to bigger towns and strengthening commercial busi-nesses. The discovery of a mi-neral spring in the 19th Century turned Mölln into a spa town. At the same time the populari-ty of Till Eulenspiegel was also promoted.

Today, Mölln has about 18,500 inhabitants. The old town pen-insula is shaped by medieval streets and buildings dating from the 15th to the 19th Cen-turies. The old town is listed under Heritage Protection.

In the historic Town Hall, there is an exhibition on the history of the salt

transportation. Long distance cy-cling route Old Salt Street Mölln is situated along the Old Salt Street cycling route from Lüneburg to Lübeck. the house of the town captain. The town captain was sent to Mölln from Lübeck.

The advantages of being loca-ted right at the Old Salt Street brought numerous merchants and promoted Mölln into a commercial town. In addition, the completion of the Stecknitz-Delvenau-Channel, a precursor

to the Elbe-Lübeck-Channel, in 1398, opened another route for the salt trade.

Mölln was made a maritime lien to Lübeck by the dukes of Lauenburg for more than 324 years between 1359 and 1683. After the house of the dukes had died out in 1689, the so-vereignty changed constantly.

The best way to get to know Mölln is on foot.

Start out on the old Market Square and allow yourself to en-joy the unique ensemble of buil-dings around you. The historical Town Hall, the St. Nicolai Church, the Eulenspiegel Fountain, me-morial stone and Museum are among the most interesting sights and are within arm‘s re-

ach. However, it is not only the popular buildings that deserve your attention. Don‘t miss the half-timbered houses and their many small details, like the tiny laughing figure of the Eulenspie-gel in a gable, or a colourful rose bush by a front door.

Mölln has, of course, other im-portant historical figures. The physician and lecturer Samu-

The town captain‘s house plays a central role in Mölln‘s history.

In 1359, Mölln was made a ma-ritime lien to Lübeck by the Du-kes of Lauenburg which meant that Lübeck received the taxes and incomes from the town.

Today, the town captain‘s house is home to the Duchy of Lauen-burg Foundation and the Lau-

enburg Academy of Science and Culture, which regularly hosts events and exhibitions.

Natural treasure of the Hellbachtal From a glacier of the last ice age, melting water formed a channel creating a valley. In turn, this created, off the north receding ice edge, a sandur, whereby the water could flow slowly out of the valley. This resulted in the emergence of moors and Beech forests in the lowland.

To enable use of the Hell-bachtal land more effici-ently, it was unfortunately straightened and deepened in the seventies resulting in a lowering of the groundwater table, and the loss of many characteristic plant and ani-mal species.

Since 1987 an extensive re-storation of the area has been taking place and the natural course of the stream is being restored.

If you love water, you will love Mölln. A chain of lakes sur-rounds the town at the Elbe-Lübeck-Channel. The Ziegel Lake, the Stadt Lake, the Schul Lake, the Hege Lake, the Schmal Lake, and the Lütau Lake offer opportunities for amateur sea-faring captains.

In earlier centuries, water used to be the foundation of wealth.

The profit from the water mills and salt trade on the former Stecknitz Channel were the most important components. This part of history is displayed in the Museum in the old Town Hall.

Eventually, marketing the hea-ling powers of the surrounding spring water, extracted from up to 120 metres in depth, was

When landscape architect Gu-stav Lüttge presented his plans for a spa park close to the town centre in 1966, he called it the “most beautiful spa park in nort-hern Germany“.

Today his words have a new me-aning.

Since the refurbishment of the 40,000 square metre park was

finished in 2011, it shines in new splendour. In the western part of the park, visitors will find the Japanese garden, blossoming flower beds, and an impressive water feature.

The lawns add to the spacious atmosphere.

Discgolf... is the name of the ne-west sport, which can be played in the Eulenspiegel town.

The rules are quite simple: Par-ticipants score by throwing a frisbee of sorts into a 1.4 m high basket.

If it doesn‘t land in the basket with your first throw, you play on from the place where the

frisbee landed. The distance between the starting point and the basket is between 30 and 100 metres.

Discgolf is becoming a popular trend in Germany. As an outdoor game in the fresh air, with non-strenuous exercise, it creates fun for the whole family.

The game can be played by

5 The House of the Town Captain The Stadthauptmannshof, the house of the town captain played a central role in the history of Mölln. In 1359, Mölln was pledged to the city of Lübeck by the dukes of Lauenburg from which time Lübeck received the duties and revenues from the town. Most importantly, the Hanseatic city secured use of the strategic location of Mölln. With the establishment of the “Old Salt Road” Lübeck expanded its trade routes to the south. Location: Hauptstraße 150

6 The KurparkThe landmarked spa park was first created by the Hamburg landscape architect Gustav Lüttge in 1966. An extensive refurbishment took place from 2009 to 2011. The elaborate garden, designed with different themes, invites you to relax. The various leisure activities such as mini golf, boules, as well as a chess and a mill board allow no time to be bored. Of course, Till Eulenspiegel is present as well!

7 The Holy Spirit HospitalAt the end of Grubenstraße you will find the Holy Spirit Hospital. Till Eulenspiegel is said to have died in this hospital which stood on this site in the Middle Ages. Location: Seestraße

Where else would the queen of ve-getables thrive other than on the light and sandy soils in Lauenburg. The domestic asparagus is in season from April to June, depending on weather conditions. The region has many direct sellers of this de-licious vegetable. But the region is not only known for its asparagus. Pike, walleye, perch, eel and rain-bow trout are just a few of the fish

that come from the 135 hectares of fishing grounds. Due to the lakes‘ wealth, all varieties of fish should not be missed on the menu.

Mölln has a forest area of over 1,200 hectares so it is therefore not surprising that the produce from these forests, such as excel-lent venison and delicious forest mushrooms, find their way onto plates in restaurants.

Local cuisine fresh on the tableDelicious cake creations can be enjoyed

best in one of Mölln‘s numerous cafes or in the farm cafés in the surrounding area.

The architectural design of the pool building inspired its name.

The Möllner Welle is divided into three areas. The swimming pool has four 25 metre lanes, including a non-swimmer’s area. The non-swimmer’s pool, a free formed attraction pool with massage jets, provides various water exercise areas.

It also provides space for adults and children to play. For the younger

guests, there is also a toddler / baby pool with various games.

Do you want to relax after swim-ming? Then visit the attractive sauna area with its three different saunas.

One sauna has a temperature of 55°C to 60°C and is gentle on both blood circulation and the skin.

The steam sauna has a low tempe-rature but the high humidity pro-motes blood circulation and has a positive effect on airways. The Finnish infusion sauna is operated at a temperature of 80°C to 100°C. Here you will find a detailed infu-sion plan.

The sauna is part of Finland‘s cul-ture and everyday life. No matter which sauna you choose, afterwards

you can relax in the attractive out-door area, in the quiet rest area, or perhaps meet for a chat beside the fireplace in the lounge area.

The Möllner Welle building will remind visi-tors of a wave due to its architectural design.

The large windows allow an unobstructed view of nature.

Younger guests are welcome in the family pool, but a great toddler area has also been created.

With four 25 metre lanes, you can swim at length to improve your health.
