FROM TOP TO BOTTOM

Maybe you’ve noticed that a metal panel

has been removed from one of the beams

that support the roof of our sanctuary.

That’s because structural engineers have

been snooping around at our request.

They’re telling us that the beams are in need of some sup-

port themselves. Those beams have gradually deteriorat-

ed and weakened over time.

Some substantial work will be needed to make the neces-

sary repairs. Additionally, the tile floor of the sanctuary

must be replaced. So we’ll probably have to vacate the

premises by early 2017 to make way for the work to get

done.

We’ve been anticipating this project, so our Vision Team

decided to explore some possible remodeling of the chan-

cel while all this is going on. We’ve been consulting with

Strata Architecture & Preservation of Kansas City.

They’ve produced a preliminary schematic design for us to

study.

If anyone wants to see what’s possible, drop by the office

and take a gander. Just please remember that nothing at

all has been decided. We’ll have plenty of time to talk to-

gether as a congregation before any final decisions are

made.

ly, not negotiable. But if we can enhance the function and

beauty of the chancel area while doing what needs to be

Disciple III Class to Begin Soon

Wednesday, September 7th will be the first class of

Disciple III. The only requirement is that you have complet-

ed Disciple I.

Disciple III, Remember Who You Are is the third study

in the four-phase DISCIPLE program. The driving idea in

this study is the connection between memory and identity

as the people of God. The word You in the title is meant to be heard both in its singular form (the individual) and its

plural form (the community). We are a community of

memory. This class is a thirty – two week study and we will

read the major and minor Old Testament prophets, with the

exception of Daniel, and will read the thirteen Letters tradi-

tionally attributed to Paul. To establish the historical context

in which the prophets spoke for God, daily reading assign-

ments draw also on the books of Deuteronomy through

Chronicle.

Cost of the workbook is $18.00, but we do not want this

be a deterrent to anyone wanting to take this class. No

need to sign up ahead of time. Questions? Call Sue

Bachman 660-247-2110.

Transportation from school is provided,

but parents will have to pick their kids up from church.

The Change Will Do You Good

The change will do you good is a line from one of Sir El-

ton John’s songs. I have remembered this often as I have had

to face the changes that we all face.

The world is different today from years ago when I was an

adolescent. Many words have meanings today very different

than in my day. We pledged to “be square” in the Cub Scout

oath, we sang of wearing our “gay” apparel and information

about being “Liberal” or “Conservative” spoke to how one

thought and not who one is.

The world has different ways of doing things, even the ma-

chines upon which we do things have changed. My phone has

more memory now than my first three computers combined.

The ROM in my current machine has more than all three of

those early machines.

Morals are different. The way we dress is different. The

way we eat is different. That is when, where and what is differ-

ent. It sometimes seems that everything is different.

Many times, recently, I have heard comments about stop-

ping the changes. I have even heard a rant or two about how

change needs to be slowed if not stopped altogether.

Well, maybe so, but, how? Maybe, it is a good thing to

embrace changes. Maybe there is no other choice that meets

the needs of people. Maybe there simply is no other choice.

I myself like change. That is, I like change as long as it is not

just for the sake of change itself. Not all changes are positive.

However, I would be much more isolated, if I had never

agreed to the change from pencil to computer or even phone

texting.

Like everything or anything, changes we experience can be

used for evil or wrong. This is where we as Christians need to

be involved. It is not a matter of keeping change out of our

lives, it is learning the good ways to use the changes and help

others use it for right.

It makes the need for our sharing of the gospel even more

important. “Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever.”

Hebrew 13:8 It is we who need to change to help the world

change. Be the change.

Randy
