Welcome to Botetourt County

“A Great Place To Be”The Botetourt County Chamber of Commerce is proud to present Botetourt Living 2013,which is celebrating its 15th year of continuous publication. Fifteen years is not enoughtime to tell all the wonderful stories in our County, but in these pages you will read aboutthe beginnings of the area and the "foundation businesses" that powered its economyin the early decades.

Botetourt (pronounced Bot-i-tot) County was founded in 1770 as a major stopping pointfor those traveling West. It was named after Norborne Berkeley, baron de Botetourt, whowas royal governor of Virginia from 1768 until his death in 1770. The County is now a partof the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Roanoke County, RoanokeCity and the City of Salem, and the Town of Vinton.

Because of its setting near regional airports, major markets and resource bases, BotetourtCounty is an excellent location for newly-formed or relocating businesses. The level ofeducational opportunities in and near the County creates a powerful labor force for mostany type of business. It also offer outstanding arts and culture, unmatched outdoorrecreation and abundant shopping, all amidst a natural backdrop of mountain rangesand beautiful rivers.

Among the County's stated goals is the intent to remain cooperative and supportive ofbusiness development while retaining its vast natural beauty and remarkable historicpast.

Economic DevelopmentTakes New Direction

Botetourt County is in the enviable position of having its business parks — Vista Park, Jack C. Smith Industrial Park and EastPark Commerce Center — with no remaining land to offer for newcomer businesses or expansions. is has sparked a new initiative to encourage more development on the remaining 600 acres of County-owned land in Botetourt Center at Greenfield, near Daleville. Another 300 acres at Botetourt Center is occupied by Altec Industries Inc., which manufactures aerial lis for the utility industry, or has been converted into school, park and trail system uses.

Greenfield is a prime location for industry for many reasons, including the availability of inland seaports less than two and a half hours away, and marine seaports in Norfolk and Newport News less than four hours away. e park is 3.5 miles from Interstate 81 and has bulk rail access about a mile away. It occupies a beautiful natural setting beside a four-lane highway 13 miles from Roanoke Regional Airport.

Deputy County Administrator David Moorman is leading the effort to see that the County's marketing plan forGreenfield becomes reality. As a first step, the County completed the installation of a 65,000 square-foot pad thatcould immediately accommodate a manufacturing or industrial operation. Engineering plans are already drawnto double the pad to 130,000 square feet if requested. Taking this proactive approach gives the County a boostwhen showing interested companies just how easy it can be to relocate here. Sites at Greenfield range from aminimum of 10 acres to more than 100 acres, says Moorman.

Foundations

Page 9: LIVING 2013 - Botetourt Living

From its inception, Botetourt County was destined to be a center of business and industry. Less than 20 years after its founding in 1770, it had a paved macadamized road, the Valley Turnpike. Southwest of Buchanan on the turnpike was Tayloe's Furnace, known also as Cloverdale 1, an iron ore mine that may have opened as early as 1787. The rich natural resources of the county were among the advantages that led to the foundation businesses of an economy that still powers the area.

Mining and agriculture drove the county in its earliest decades. Botetourt's gently rolling hills and more robust mountain stretches harbored a variety of mineable minerals, including shale for brick-making,

and vast deposits of high-grade calcium limestone for making cement and mortar or as a crushed aggregate in road construction. Its forests seemed endless.

Centered in an ideal climate zone between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains, the county’s businesses began to diversify as Virginia edged into the 1800s. Banks and stores prospered, and institutions that provided the necessities of life and afterlife found markets.

The county's oldest continuous business that can be dated with certainty is The Fincastle Herald. The Bank of Fincastle opened its doors in 1875, a mere 13 years after the town was founded, and the

Courthouse Square in Fincastle a center of history, including a museum

present-day Bank of Botetourt began in 1899 as the Bank of Buchanan. Rader Funeral Home, which has donated its early files to the Fincastle Library genealogy room, opened in 1898.

Newspapers

The first edition of the Fincastle Herald was published in 1866, according to writer Kathleen Morra-Sloan in the newspaper’s 125th anniversary edition. The site

for its office was in a building across from the Fincastle Courthouse, near where the offices are now.

The first newspaper in Botetourt County, The Herald of Virginia & Fincastle Weekly Advertiser, was published in 1800. From 1800 to 1935, the dates used by Morra-Sloan in her account, 14 papers existed in the Town of Fincastle and 10 in the Town of Buchanan. No community newspapers were published during the war, says Ed McCoy, Herald editor since 1984.

The Fincastle Herald has gone through several ownerships and is now under the guidance of Wayne and Dolores Brockenbrough of Christiansburg, who also own the Salem Times Register where the Fincastle Herald is printed.

The rich history of the Town of Fincastle includes this building, which housed The Fincastle Herald and today’s Bank of Fincastle.

McCoy, Betty Jo Barger, who joined the paper in 1972 and serves as copy editor, receptionist and subscription staff, and Debbi Starr, account representative for 12 years, put out a weekly edition each Wednesday. Anita Firebaugh reports on the Board of Supervisors meetings and does special coverage, but McCoy, a journalism graduate of Washington and Lee University, does the bulk of the weekly writing.

McCoy and Firebaugh have also become the resident historians, salvaging 30-plus years of photos that previous owners considered disposing of. The photographs, stored in plastic bins, are now a project of the Botetourt Farm Bureau Women's Committee, which is sorting the photographs and hopes to use some of them to develop a pictorial history of farming in Botetourt County.

Banks

The Farmers Bank of Fincastle began serving the public in May 1852, but with the beginning of the

Civil War in 1861, Farmers Bank -- and all other Virginia state banks -- converted most of its assets to Confederate securities and dollars and then collapsed in the devaluation of the Confederate currency with the end of the war.

In 1875, however, a group of local residents petitioned the District Court to approve a new bank in Fincastle. The petition was approved and The Bank of Fincastle was born on Sept. 22, 1875. There have been only seven presidents in the history of The Bank of Fincastle. The bank has a strong history of community support with educational programs and community service projects such as the fall 5K and 10K races. The 5/10K Race began in 1987 with a total of 155 registered runners. In 2012, the bank had 981 registered runners!

The bank has grown to eight offices with seventy-two employees. The Bank of Fincastle’s first Branch Bank opened in Daleville in 1969; since, it has added four other branches in Botetourt, including one in The Glebe retirement community.

Another early bank was in Buchanan. In 1864, Billy Booze, an officer in the Bank of Virginia in Buchanan, hid the bank’s money under boards under his bed to keep it away from Federal troops. To further protect the money, his mother in-law, Elizabeth Johnson, hopped into bed and, surrounded by medicines, was

said to be deathly ill when the troops arrived. The Bank of Virginia had opened in 1839.

In 1899, a new bank, The Bank of Buchanan – forerunner of the now Bank of Botetourt – opened on Main Street, Buchanan. The grandson of Elizabeth

Johnson became its second president in 1904. The name changed to Bank of Botetourt in 1995.

Today, Bank of Botetourt has 10 locations stretching from Moneta to Lexington, plus an operations center in Buchanan.

Enter the 20th Century

The newer wave of Botetourt County businesses began mostly with the arrival of the 20th century. The Roanoke & Botetourt Telephone Company opened in December 1900. Frustrated by the dismissive attitude of the Botetourt Telephone Company in refusing them entry into its first shareholders’ meeting in Buchanan, a handful of county men formed the Roanoke and Botetourt Telephone Company at $10 a share on Nov. 20, 1900. A board of nine persons was

named, including J.W. Layman, a last name that would echo across the following century in the company's upper management positions.

R&B Telephone merged with CFW Communications in 2000 to become NTELOS. Its wire line business was spun off in 2011 as Lumos Networks, a fully independent company in Daleville that provides residential and business services.

Lawrence Transportation Systems began in 1932 in Roanoke as Lawrence Transfer and Storage, but built a new facility in Botetourt County in 1996. The company, now employee-owned, has expanded into waste container services, is the CASE equipment provider for the state of Virginia, and has four divisions elsewhere in Virginia and two in North Carolina. Lawrence Companies CEO Chip Lawrence is the third generation of his family to head the company.

The Craig-Botetourt Electrical Cooperative is one of the county's oldest businesses, having incorporated

on August 1936. The Co-op serves the mountainous rural sections of Botetourt County, five other counties and the Town of Monroe, W. Va. There are about five meters per mile on its 1,353 miles of electrical lines, more than 90 percent of which are residential customers. CBEC employs 21 people.

Gala Industries represents another growth company that began as a family business and is now employee-owned. The company makes underwater pelletizing systems and centrifugal dryers and is the world’s number one manufacturer of pelletizers. These machines turn polyethylene and other polymers into balls and cylinders of various sizes. These pellets are used for the production of such items as pens, plastic wrap, chewing gum, duct tape, and bottles.

The business began in the basement of John and Mary Dudley Pauley’s home with a low tech idea of Mary Pauley and her sister Alice Ann Wilhelm, nurses who came up with an idea for a better fastener for baby diapers. Pauley’s brother Vernon E. “Buck”

Dudley, then an engineer with Union Carbide, designed the Di-D-Klip. Dudley and John Pauley launched Gala Industries in 1959, and a decade later were selling half a million sets of “Di-D-Klips” annually.

Gala later moved into more high tech products, and the diaper clip operation was sold in 1988. The John Pauley Plant was built in Gala in 1970 and was managed by Pauley until his death in 1986. The company has sold more than 6,000 pelletizing systems worldwide and now operates Gala GmbH in Germany and Gala Industries Asia Ltd. in Thailand. Sixty-one percent of Gala employees live in Botetourt County, and many serve on fire and rescue squads as well as Toys for Tots and Relay for Life programs. The company also is a major sponsor of the Botetourt Educational Foundation.

Mining

Mining has remained important to Botetourt County since its beginning. Liberty Lime & Stone began mining three miles below Indian Rock in 1918. James River Hydrate & Supply Company came along in 1933. It then was owned by James River Limestone and later by Oglebay Norton and now is Carmeuse Lime & Stone-James River Operations.

General Shale began in Blue Ridge as Roanoke Webster Brick in 1928 and is now the North American subsidiary of Wienerberger AG and a leading manufacturer of brick. General Shale is celebrating its 85th anniversary in 2013.

Roanoke Cement arrived in 1951 when Lone Star Cement built a $6 million limestone mining and Portland cement production facility in the county. Still the only active cement plant in Virginia, the company became a subsidiary of Titan Cement Co., of Athens, Greece, in 1992. Roanoke Cement can produce more than 1.3 million tons of cement annually. The company has earned the Energy Star Award each year from 2007 through 2012 from the U.S.

Agricultural History

Anyone viewing the county’s former orchard land now dotted with upscale housing would know the county is suburbanized, especially nearest its border with Roanoke County. Despite this, the county has a fair amount of production in beef cattle and dairy operations and viable farms.

John Alderson, owner of John Alderson Insurance Co., farms 160 acres with his son Curtis. Aldersons came to the county in 1772, John says, and were prominent in farming. He currently is researching the family farm history, but knows it is substantial from the photographs collected by his daughter, Debra McClane, an architectural historian in Richmond, Va., and author of a picture history book on Botetourt County. The Aldersons raise Angus beef cattle and grow hay, but ancestors were much more involved with a canning factory and as vendors at a farmers’ market.

Jeter Farm in Bonsack will celebrate its 160th anniversary Sept. 27, marking six generations of

Promoted at 1893 World’s Fair

A special World’s Fair edition of the Fincastle Herald, dated April 6,

1893, applauds the area’s mountains, waterways, towns and villages

and railroads and its business acumen.

The County offers views to the summit of Rich Patch Mountain northern

boundary, to Patterson, Price and Caldwell mountains southwest to

northeast, to Purgatory Mountain in the East, and Blue Ridge to the

south with highest point Apple Orchard summit. At the western boundary,

the view was to the crest of Catawba Mountain.

The description spoke of black and variegated marbles being developed

by three incorporated companies and noted Buchanan was near deposits

of brown and red hematite iron ores and large deposits of lime burning

and fluxing stone. On Back Creek and around Fincastle, deposits of black

marble were considered “equal of the Belgian or any other black marbles

of the world.” Four companies were producing it: Black Marble Company,

Roanoke, with quarries and mills in Nace; Fincastle Stone and Marble;

Virginia Black Marble Co, Fincastle, and Beckley Marble Development

Company, Fincastle.

Buchanan had The Franklin Brass Works and The Smith and Brigg’s

Works for making plumbers’ and gas fitters’ supplies. Eagle Rock had

Moore Lime Company while Princess Furnace was at Glen Wilton. Lithia,

Troutville and Cloverdale were identified as “important business centers”

with iron ore and canneries; Amsterdam was agricultural and Daleville

was “a busy village with the county’s largest “roller process” flour mill and

Botetourt Normal School.

The County was “selling more than half of all lime used in Virginia, North

and South Carolinas,” and its iron ore at Glen Wilton was used in the

Battleship Texas.

The mineral waters of Blue Ridge Springs, Coyner’s Springs, Dagger’s

Springs (northeastern part of county); Ferro Magnesian Springs at

Fincasle and springs on land at Brugh’s Mill attracted visitors. The

County’s principal products were wheat, corn, oats, rye, barley, tobacco,

sorghum, melons and vegetables of all kinds. It was “preeminently the

fruit county of the State of Virginia.”

A steam cannery owned by the Rev. J.C. Moomaw canned 40,000 cases

of 24 cans each, annually of fruits and vegetables. In 1863, some 37

steam canneries were expected to operate in the county producing

200,000 cases or 5 million cans.

The people of Botetourt County were said to have a “high toned sense

of right, truth and honor” and “little drunkenness.”

continuous stewardship of its land and operations. Ned Jeter II, called "Little Ned," his brother Darrell and their father "Big Ned" Jeter work the farm full-time growing truck crops, beef cattle and grains for sale. The 400-acre farm contains about 250 head of cattle producing calves for sale each year. Six vegetable

crops are planted and soybean, corn and wheat are raised for local sale. The family also leases about 600 acres in Buchanan, Montvale in Bedford County and in Roanoke County.

The Botetourt County farm was purchased in 1853 by Jacob Bonsack, a country doctor and an ancestor of the Jeter family. A modern touch to the farm's operations is seen in its agritourism operations. There are hayrides and a pumpkin patch where visitors can select produce, as well as a country store event that showcases local products. Little Ned says his grandmother started the agritourism effort 35 years ago as a way to get kids started in agriculture.

The Jeters follow a "no-till" concept that uses modern equipment to plant seed directly into the top half-inch of the ground, eliminating the need for plowing before planting. No-till farming is a more environmentally sustainable way of producing vegetables.

The neighborhood of Ashley Plantation offers rolling hills and a golf course

Botetourt County offers a true supermarket selection of real estate, from mini-farms to golf communities to historic houses in towns with sidewalks. “ere is a lot of land available, and there is renewed interest in building,” says Dayna Patrick of RE/MAX All Stars Realty in Daleville.

Twenty acres is considered a large piece of land these days, Patrick says. Prices, as of spring 2013, were averaging $8,000-$10,000 an acre. Occasionally, a larger farm, especially horse properties, pop onto the market. e newer subdivisions in the county – Ashley Plantation, Highland Manor, Steeplechase and Santillane –

continue to attract those who want a rural lifestyle with great views, but also desire ready access to nearby metropolitan areas. “Most want to be within 30 minutes of the city,” Patrick says. e South end of the County – from Fincastle or Troutville to the border with Roanoke County – serves as a bedroom community for Roanoke with commutes of about 20 minutes via U.S. 11 or 220.

Historic properties in the Town of Buchanan also are a draw. Residents not only have a walkable shopping community, but have the advantage of the Town’s many activities designed to attract residents and tourists alike.

Whether in a town – Fincastle also has historic properties – or in a development, County residents have exceptional views of both the Allegheny and Blue Ridge mountains.

Apartments Latest Addition at Town Center

Fralin & Waldron has broken ground at the Daleville Town Center for a 120-unit apartment project, continuing the build-out of the county's most visible growth center. Andy Kelderhouse, president of Fralin & Waldron Inc., projects a completion date of early 2014 for the $13 million project, which will include 34 garages, a community center, pool and clubhouse.

Different from the usual "garden-style" concept, the apartments will be contained in four three-story buildings, one of which will be served by an elevator. irty percent of the units can be entered from ground level, while upper levels are served by a common corridor in hotel-style. e units will come in one, two and three-bedroom choices with rents ranging from the mid-$700s to $1,150 per month.

e Center also features single-family homes, the first of which have sold. A new spec house is underway.

Together 4 Troutville Bolsters Community

Following the major success of having Troutville declared an Appalachian Trail Community by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, Together 4 Troutville community activists continue to support the Town's strategic plan by raising money, organizing special recreation events and fostering community spirit.

e organization sponsors at least seven signature events a year and has already scheduled Troutville Trail Days, June 7-9; Family Day of Hiking, Sept. 28; and a Holiday Celebration, Dec. 7, 2013. For more information, visit www.togetherfortroutville.com or phone 540-992-5379.

Buchanan’s Variety Unsurpassed

Up-to-date movies play at the historic Buchanan eatre, saved by a community effort, and Civil War battles are staged in its park alongside the James

River. is community has direct access to the James River, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Appalachian Trail and the Glenwood Horse Trail. In 2012, the town celebrated its 200th birthday at its annual Arbor Day tree planting, and regular cruise-ins are held for antique and classic car buffs.

Within the Town limits, the 1830 Kyle House, owned by Schaal’s Catering, is a destination for weddings and catered events and just outside the town, Santillane, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, operates as a bed and breakfast and wedding destination.

in honor of the inaugural recipient, Richard Henegar, who received the award during the basketball game.

Richard Henegar, Jr., a 2003 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School became a valley celebrity in September of 2012 through a local act of kindness and compassion that also brought him national recognition. When Henegar, who manages Quality Auto Paint & Body in Roanoke, learned about an act of vandalism on a college student’s car, he decided to react. Henegar and his family-owned company volunteered to repaint Jordan Addison’s Volkswagon Passat. Henegar also recruited other companies to donate tinted windows, new tires, reupholstered door panels, a suspension system, a stereo system, powder-coated rims and a new security system.

Henegar’s act of kindness seems to be an act of habit. Two yearsago, he also completed a surprise auto makeover for a friend who was serving in the military. Aer a tour in Afghanistan, Jason Clary returned to find his 2002 Nissan Frontier pickup completely re-tooled.

It did not go unnoticed. Henegar received numerous letters of support, coverage in the local paper and on local television, and even taped a segment of the nationally syndicated Ellen show, which was shown on September 10, 2012. Since then he has continued to be recognized on the local, state, and national level.

Bank of Fincastle RaceStill Strong at 26

One of Botetourt County's most popular outdoor events is the Bank of Fincastle 5K and 10K races,

a 26-year-old fall event that in 2012 got donations and support from 28 businesses and government organizations and drew 981 participants. Runners and walkers of all ages choose either the 5K or the 10K course, often competing in teams from area schools.

Both courses wind through the historic Town of Fincastle. The first 600 finishers receive a specially designed T-shirt. The 2012 shirt was emblazoned with a large muskie leaping out of the James River in pursuit of a red-winged blackbird, all portrayed on a background of Botetourt County autumn leaves.

Outdoor Activities are RichIt can be said with certainty that most of us want to live where we can play, and the more the better. In Botetourt County, there need not be any long drives gobbling up recreation hours. Simply step out the door and enter a near-ideal environment for pursuing canoeing, kayaking, cycling, camping, hiking, or fishing dreams.

Much of the western half of the County is filled with the vast timber stands and ridgelines of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, which occupy 120 square miles, or 22 percent of the County. In those 70,000 acres can be found extensive spaces

open to hunting, fishing, rock climbing, caving, swimming, horseback riding and bird watching. All-terrain and dirt bike enthusiasts are drawn to the 15 miles of off-road opportunities on Patterson Mountain.

In the long stretch between the broad slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains on one side and the Allegheny Mountains on the other, lie the storied waters of the Upper James River, with its variety of levels of camping, shelters, pavilions, restrooms and picnic tables. Wildflower pilgrimage locations are abundant.

A truly ancient wonder of nature, the waters of the James alternate between placid pools and thunderous rapids and include a pristine 14-mile stretch of state-designated Virginia Scenic River between Eagle Rock and Springwood. In its 45-mile plunge down the eastern half of Botetourt, the Upper James River offers countless opportunities for trout and smallmouth bass fishing, its twinkling waters inviting the enthusiast both morning and

At its headwaters, the James is formed from the confluence of the Jackson River and the Cowpasture River. The Jackson, a nationally-ranked trout fishing venue, draws the most dedicated fly-fishing

enthusiasts to the graceful ripples of its wooded banks. The Cowpasture, rolling through long-time Virginia farm country, is home to the challenging rock bass and a dozen other species that can turn a day into an indelible memory.

While these wide open spaces offer terrific experiences, some day you may just want to roll your bike out and head down the highway.

Upper James Water Trails Adds New Access

The Upper James Water Trail, which winds through 45 miles in the County, has added another access point. Rockbridge Corporation and Carmeuse Lime & Stone - James River Operations donated three land parcels valued at $31,000 for the construction of a formal hand-carry access ramp to the river and to a parking area for vehicles and trailers.

An additional $11,000 in cash and in-kind donations were given by Carmeuse, Gene's Logging, Robertson-Fowler, Twin River Outfitters, Wilderness Canoe, Jelly Stone Campground and the James River Association.

1,600 Cyclists Expected for Tour

The 2013 Bike Virginia Tour, June 21-26, is expected to feature about 1,600 cyclists who will begin in Rockbridge County and then travel to Botetourt

County. A base camp will be located at the County's 125-acre Greenfield Recreation Center.

The tour is a program of Bike Virginia, a 501(c)(3) non-profit. More information can be found at www.BikeVirginia.org or at 804-477-1780.

For hiking, horseback riding or a scenic drive on a sunny afternoon, there are 75 miles of the Appalachian Trail winding through the County. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs for 35 miles along the eastern border, and Virginia Bike Route 76, the Virginia portion of U.S. Bicycle Route 76, enters the county east and north and roughly parallels the Appalachian Trail as it rolls through rural and urban territory, then turns west and exits the county from its southwest corner.

Recreation Important in Schools

Opportunities in sports recreation, indoor and out, in Botetourt County are comprehensive. Each of the county's elementary, middle and high schools has a Booster Club with a president and board to oversee school competitive sports. In addition to the school-based sports, the Botetourt County Parks & Recreation staff manage

In 2013 the Sports Complex expects to draw 95 to100 teams for the ASA/USA girls fast-pitch softball tournament for players 18 years and younger, many of whom have already signed on for college play following high school graduation. This year should be as good a year as the facility has ever had, but expects even greater things in 2014. At that time, the Sports Complex will be host to the ASA/USA 16- and-under competition, with an expected attendance of 300 or more college coaches looking to recruit for their institutions. Teams and players come from as far away as California, representing 27-30 states in a 7-day tournament.

The Botetourt Sports Complex is designed for high-end service in tournament play. It is centered on a three-story tower with amenities for tournament operations, scorekeeping, on-site concessions and restrooms. Surrounding the operations tower are four 300-foot championship-level softball/youth baseball fields. Each field seats 350 persons, expandable to 1,000. There are electronic scoreboards, state-of-the-art lighting and a playground. Adjacent to the $4.1 million facility are a half-mile paved walking track, four soccer fields and a cross-country running course.

The facility’s reputation for customer service helps it compete for tournaments even against big cities like Chicago. During the busy season beginning in May, the Sports Complex partners with nearby Salem, Roanoke County and Roanoke City to produce large-scale tournaments.

Additions to its amenities for Botetourt County youth continue with the recent completion of two batting cages suitable for practice and training. Local sponsors provided funds for the improvements, including a $5,000 gift from Altec Industries, Inc., a local manufacturer of aerial lifts for the power transmission and other industries.

in-house programs in football, cheerleading and indoor soccer. Adult recreation from Parks & Rec include an Adult Church Co-Ed League in the spring and a Men's League in the fall, both in slow-pitch softball, a popular favorite.

Sports Complex Fun and Economically Strong

Since its 2007 opening, the Botetourt Sports Complex has provided a venue for teams from the county, the region and across the U.S. to compete in tournaments in a state-of-the-art facility with professional management. This gem of Botetourt County's Parks & Recreation programs is also a powerful economic component of the County's revenues. It is located within the 125-acre Greenfield Recreation Park near Daleville.

Starting with a five-event season in 2007, the Sports Complex expanded to 36 events in 2012. As a measure of its effectiveness, its hotel "room nights" numbers grew from 1,275 in 2009 to 2,644 in 2012. In each of the last four years, says Sports Complex manager Jim Farmer, the tournament schedule has attracted between 22,000 and 27,000 players, coaches and spectators to Botetourt County. This was all accomplished with two full-time people, a part-time staff and and volunteers.

Getting Out and AboutNew shops and restaurants, thriving businesses, three established vineyards and a brewery scheduled to open in late spring mean locals and visitors have plenty to do in Botetourt County. Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee Company and Town Center Tap House are locating at Daleville Town Center, where weeklyFarmers’ Markets (combining previous markets held in Troutville and Ikenberry Orchards) are held on Saturday mornings, from May through October.

Fincastle Vineyard & Winery, Virginia Mountain Vineyards and Blue Ridge Vineyard continue to bring a wealth of music events to the area through regular

weekend concerts that start in early spring and continue through most of the year. In addition, the new Daleville Town Center Pavilion will be the site of “Party in the Park” gatherings from May through early September featuring such music groups as The Embers, The Tams, and Voltage Brothers.

The Flying Mouse Brewery, a project of Botetourt County residents Frank and Debbie Moeller, has set up house on a former architectural concrete site near Troutville. The 15-acre property is off of Virginia 76, part of the TransAmerica bike route, and affords a great view of Tinker Mountain.

Planned are a tasting bar and gift shop. Flying Mouse grew out of Frank Moeller’s home brewing hobby, but the mechanical engineer has since studied brewing and has enlisted four partners for the new business. He expects the commercial venture to initially offer three ales.

Sterling Silver Shop Opens in Daleville

Shopping in Botetourt County got a big boost in March with the opening in Botetourt Commons in Daleville of Penelope, a woman’s clothing and sterling silver jewelry shop. Penelope Searcy began her business 25 years ago to help occupy her time following the death of her youngest daughter from cancer. She said she never imagined that a quarter of a century later there would be eight physical locations and an Internet storefront at www.Penelope-jewelry.com. She has shops in Lynchburg, Farmville, Richmond and Charlottesville.

The new store is next to Kroger in the Commons. The staff includes a full-time manager, Penny West, and about 15 part-time employees.

Shop offerings in addition to clothing include earrings, bracelets, pendants, necklaces, rings, chains and children's items.

Already at the Botetourt Commons center is Three Li'l Pigs Barbeque Restaurant and Catering. The establishment smokes the meat on site and offers a variety of barbeque for eat-in or packed as fixings to take home and assemble. Outdoor dining is available in season. Also at the center are Little Caesars, a Kroger super grocery, Goodwill Store and a coffee shop where musicians hold weekly jams.

Nearby on Route 220 is Bellacino’s Restaurant, and a Cracker Barrel restaurant and Taco Bell are near the intersection of Interstate 81, Route 220 and Route 11.

Cupcake Cottage offers more than pastries

Melinda Amos and Linda St. Clair held a soft opening for Cupcake Cottage in Daleville in December 2012 planning to give away cupcakes to drum up business for a major opening much later. Instead, they got an order from the Bank of Fincastle to provide cupcakes for a customer appreciation project.

"We went ahead with the grand opening in January, and it has really taken off," says Melinda.

Both women are residents of Botetourt County and long-time friends with business experience. Melinda had owned restaurants, but when they decided to start the shop they took a whole summer and cooked recipes gathered from mothers and grandmothers. Most popular among their many pastries are the lemon-raspberry and the Chunk O'Chocolate cupcakes, though the store also sells other items such as cake pops and chocolate-covered pretzels.

The store's concept includes a lively selection of women’s purses, scarves, jewelry, and children's wear.

"The idea behind the store is that you don't have to travel to Roanoke to buy something sweet or pick up a gift for your girlfriend or spouse," Melinda said.

Cupcake Cottage also offers a birthday party service. The store is located at 1805 Roanoke Road in the little yellow house next to Papa John's. Hours are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday. More information is available at www.cupcakecottagengifts.com or at 540-966-1123.

Families Provide Core Businesses

Family businesses abound everywhere, but Botetourt County certainly has its share of really special ones. An example is the Thriftway Food store in Troutville, now run by Paige Weddle, the third generation of the Painter family that opened the place in 1935. The store is an intriguing blend of old and new.

Ikenberry Orchards, a fifth-generation business, has grown fruit in the county for nearly 100 years. In addition to its annual Apple Harvest Festival in October, Ikenberry Orchards operates a prominent foodstuffs and gift shop year-round at Daleville. The store sells apples and peaches from the family orchard along with locally grown meats and vegetables and items commissioned from elsewhere. Among its offerings are Ann’s Apple Butter products made by Ann DeMaury of Troutville, who took over her father’s business.

Nestled among the vegetables, meats and canned goods are displays of greeting cards made from original photos taken by Weddle’s daughter Megan and Megan’s original jewelry, which also is sold on the Etsy web market for handmade items.

Customers have been greeted for 51 years by employee Margaret Hatcher, who recalls seeing Paige as a toddler when Hatcher’s parents used to drive from Nace to trade eggs for groceries.

“All I ever wanted to do was work at Painter’s,” Margaret said. She has only been late for work one day.

Elsewhere in Botetourt County, visitors can encounter family enterprises. Porter and Faye Caldwell of Fincastle run Caldwell Mountain

Attic Productions Enters 18th Season

Attic Productions community theater has offered family friendly shows in the County since 1995, staging both established and locally written plays. Volunteers take the roles, build the sets and promote the shows, which include special productions for school children.

For the 2013 season, its 18th, Attic Productions will stage five regular productions culminated with “It’s a Wonderful Life” opening Nov. 28. In addition, the Youth Ensemble staged a comedy and the Raggle Taggle Players took shows into the elementary schools.
