A special exhibit of work by a talented and creative group of Botetourt County elementary
and middle school students is currently on display at the Botetourt County Historical Museum. “Footprints of Our Forefathers-From Jamestown to
Botetourt County” opened on Saturday, May 12, and
will continue on display through the end of July. The exhibit showcases the individual and group projects
of elementary and middle school gifted students from
Botetourt County Public Schools.
With the direction of resource specialists
Mary Lynne Leffel, Marsha Peters, Michelle Sears, and Lisa Moyer, the elementary “Young Scholars” and middle school “Seminar” students researched topics
of interest to them relating to Botetourt County’s early history. Their research included field trips, the use of internet and print resources, and presenta-
tions by local historians, all of which helped them to focus on their topics of interest. The projects on display at the museum include a replica Conestoga wagon and bateaux, both means of transportation
for early settlers of the western frontier of eight-eenth century Botetourt. Other projects include displays on colonial medicine and clothing, models of
the first courthouse, an historical timeline, power-point presentations, and others. Several of the stu-dents greeted visitors dressed in period costumes at
the exhibit opening on May 12.
The exhibit, which is one of the historical society’s projects as part of the Jamestown 2007
celebration, will be on display daily at the museum in
Fincastle.

Dear Fellow Members,
The Botetourt County Historical Society, Inc. has been busy since the last
newsletter. Thanks to Botetourt County, the owner of our museum building,
we have a new roof to keep our collection dry. We would like to commend
their diligent attention to protecting our interior space and using a quality
metal roof that protects the character of our building and the surrounding
community.
Our Executive Director, Weldon Martin, has created a power point presenta-
tion on the history of Botetourt County and our Museum. He has presented
this to several groups and it has proved to be a popular topic. Please let us
know if your group would like a presentation.
The museum has hosted two book signings. The first, on April 2, was an in-
teresting and entertaining presentation in authentic costume by Michael Ce-
cere, author of Captain Thomas Posey and the 7th Virginia Regiment. Posey was
a Fincastle merchant who fought in the Revolutionary War while maintaining a
diary of his experiences. The second, on June 17, was by Debra Alderson
McClane who recently completed a photographic history of Botetourt County
entitled Images of America: Botetourt County. Debra is a native of Botetourt
and added insight to the process of completing her book. This book signing
took place under the trees in the front of the museum on a beautiful June
Sunday afternoon. I would like to thank the members who provided refresh-
ments for both of these events.
In March the board of directors gathered at the Museum to move our office to the back porch room. This provides more space for our books and helps
with the traffic flow for our visitors. The Museum Committee is in the pro-
cess of relocating some of the exhibit areas for better flow. The moving of
the old court house bell and its case proved to be a formidable project even
though it was only to the adjoining room. Unfortunately, the old doorway
would not accommodate the case which to be moved through two other
doors, over the back outside staircase and around the museum. Thanks to all
who helped that day. The work was much needed and the fellowship was
great. We have another work/moving date scheduled for August 11.
Please mark your calendars for several upcoming events. On July 28, the
Museum will be opened from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to participate in Historic Fin-
castle Inc.’s Heritage Day, a part of the Jamestown 2007 celebration. On
October 26 we will be holding our 3rd Founders Day Dinner with another
top notch guest speaker, Dr. Warren Billings, author, professor, and 17th
Century Virginia scholar.
In closing I would like to thank all of our members, volunteers, and staff for all
of your contributions of money and time. With your help we are furthering
our mission of protecting and presenting the history of Botetourt County.
Sincerely,
John Rader Jr.
President

ance. They will be limiting their display tables to 40 this year, so if you are interested in having a table for displaying your family

A Life Well Lived: Pleasant Richardson
Editor’s Note: The following is another in our occasional series profiling prominent citizens of Botetourt County, Vir-ginia. The information below has come from several sources and was gathered by Edward W. Barnett of Fincastle. Information came from The FINCASTLE HERALD, the Department of the Interior and a letter from the West Vir-ginia Division of Culture and History.
Pleasant Richardson was born a slave in 1846 in Botetourt County, Virginia. The 1853 inventory of Edward
Johnston’s Estate shows Pleasant Richardson as one of his slaves. In the records of the Department of the Interior Bu-
reau of Pensions, dated October 7, 1903, he states that his owner, at the time of enlistment, was Henry Johnston. He
lived on the Johns(t)on plantation until the third year of the War Between the States, when he ran away from home
and enlisted in the U.S. Army and took part in Bank’s expedition up the Red River Valley in Texas. Pleasant Richard-
son served with the U. S. 45th Colored Troops. When he died on Memorial Day 1935, at the age of 89, he was one
of the area’s last surviving veterans of the Civil War. He was present at the surrender of Lee at Appomattox and was
mustered out of the Army at Philadelphia. A Civil War medal for Union Veterans authorized by the 1866 West Vir-
ginia legislature to honor Union soldiers who served in West Virginia military units has been presented as a “token of
respect” and belatedly bestowed upon Pleasant Richardson for the service he gave to West Virginia and the Union Ar-
my in defense of the nation and to the benefit of the formation of the state.
On October 7, 1903 Department of the Interior Bureau of Pensions records, Pleasant Richardson lists Fincas-
tle as his residence since being discharged from the U.S. Army. His occupation is listed as House Man and he is de-
scribed as five feet six inches tall with dark brown skin. His birth place is listed as Lauderdale, Botetourt County, and
this is where he lived before he enlisted in the U.S. Army.
Pleasant Richardson came home and married Henrietta Braxton. The marriage resulted in the birth of two
children. One of the children was Arena Richardson Preston, well known educator and citizen of Fincastle and Bo-
tetourt County. Pleasant Richardson was a consistent member of the First Baptist Church of Fincastle. After his first
wife died, he married Mrs. Nancy Callender who also proceeded him in death.
July, 2007 A Touch of History Page 4
Pleasant Richardson’s obituary was included in The Fincastle Herald, dated June
4, 1935, as shown in this copy. It stated:
Pleasant Richardson was born a slave 89 years ago. He lived on the Johnson plan-
tation until the third year of the War between the states, when he ran away from home and
enlisted in the U.S. army and took part in Bank’s expedition up the Red River Valley in
Texas. He was present at the surrender of Lee at Appomattox and was mustered out of the
army at Philadelphia. He came home and married Henrietta Braxton by whom he had two
children, one of whom, Mrs. Arena Preston is still living. Upon the death of his first wife he
married Mrs. Nancy Callender who also preceded him to the grave.
Besides his daughter and sister, Mrs. Alice Edwards of Vinton, he leaves a host of
relatives and friends to mourn his loss.
He was a consistent member of the First Baptist Church of Fincastle. He was a
soldier par excellence and next to his religion prided himself in this fact. It was very appro-
priate that he answered his last bugle call on Memorial Day.
He was the last of the “old guard”. All his Botetourt comrades, Robert Kidd
Turner, George Spurlock and Thomas Reynolds have taken the last stand. In the front line
trenches, while taps are being sounded over the remains of Pleasant Richardson.
On fames eternal camping ground
Their silent tents are spread
While glory guards with solemn round
The bivouac of the dead.
