We would like to thank all of our neighborhood

groups for all they have done this year to fulfill the

mission of Liveable Neighborhoods. Your commit-

ment and dedication has made our community a

better place to live, work and raise our families.

Below are a few examples of how you have helped with our goals:

Assisted with distribution of over 4,000 Vial of Life kits.

Served as community liaisons for Christmas in October to conduct screening and identi-

fying seniors in need.

Organized a National Night Out Against Crime event.

Outreach to residents about the Landlord Training Program.

Participated in the Lead On Leadership Training.

Recruited volunteers to walk children to and from school for the Walking School Bus

Program.

Utilized mobile recycling containers from Liveable Neighborhoods for special neighbor-

hood events.

Cut and cleaned up vacant lots.

Purchased and installed motion lights for neighbors.

Designed, created and landscaped neighborhood entry signs.

Created community gardens on vacant lots.

Helped to raise funds for needy families for Christmas.

Assisted police by reporting suspicious activity in your neighborhoods.

Attending meetings and committees with Unified Government staff and elected officials

to discuss and resolve issues.

Patrolled your neighborhoods and partnered with the Police Dept. to help reduce

crime.

Establish summer youth job programs.

Distribute monthly newsletters.

Held regular neighborhood meetings and social events.

Conducted neighborhood clean ups.

Attended Unified Government Commission meetings, standing committees and budget

workshops.

Participated with the Good Neighbor Training and NRC Blue Card Program.

This report will provide you with information on some of the projects and programs operating

under the Liveable Neighborhoods department of the Unified Government’s Neighborhood Re-

source Center.

The mission of Liveable Neighborhoods is to provide information, trainings, resources and a

forum to have open discussion with Unified Government staff to improve the quality of life in

our neighborhoods. To advocate for policies and ordinances that will enhance the livability of

our community and to support efforts that will promote the benefits of having an organized

neighborhood group.

“Improving the Quality of Life within a major Speedway Community”

Targeting

Community Policing Residents and police working together to prevent crime. · Safety in Neighborhoods Assisting residents with implementing and sustaining activities and programs that reduce crime. · Code Enforcement and Landlord Issues Educating citizens and landlords about legal processes and resources available to help combat blight and sub-standard rental properties. · Vacant/Abandoned Lots To provide resources, programs, organizations and neighborhood groups with the tools they need to reduce the number of vacant/abandoned/overgrown lots. · Emergency Medical Assistance To help save lives by providing emergency responders with pertinent medical information during an emer-gency. · Health and Wellnessc Providing information, education, policies, programs and resources for combating health issues such as obe-sity, high blood pressure, diabetes and mental illness. · Mentoringe Helping children to remain in school, avoid problem behavior, and have greater attachment to their family and community. A · Minor Home Repair Addressing the needs of senior citizens and disabled with minor home repair so that they can remain in their homes as long as possible.

Liveable Neighborhoods, Community Policing and the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Dept. have

formed a coalition to support diverse leaders and organizations in Wyandotte County committed to

integrating and aligning resources to make our community safer and healthier. We have created a

partnership that is dedicated to engaging our entire community in the Wyandotte 500 initiative.

Our efforts are results focused and the bottom line is that the work of Wyandotte 500 is a common

sense, smart spending, sound investment in the future of the safety, healthiness and well-being of

Wyandotte County Kansas City, Kansas.

The Wyandotte 500 Coordinating Committee is seeking projects which target some of the various

issues below. We hope interested individuals will submit project applications to the committee,

which are available from Liveable Neighborhoods. Once approved, the coordinator can bring their

idea for the project to the Wyandotte 500 coalition to recruit interested people to form an action

planning group. The action planning group will then work together with the coordinator to com-

plete their project. All projects will be documented for collection into a booklet and distributed at

the monthly Liveable Neighborhoods meetings. We want to recognize people who have an idea and

the passion to make their projects come true.

We hope to accomplish 500 projects and make a positive difference in the quality of life for our resi-

dents. Please join us for the Wyandotte 500 Program at the monthly Liveable Neighborhoods meet-

ings, we welcome anyone and everyone!

2010 Wyandotte 500 Projects

Lap #1 Vial of Life Program

The Vial of Life kit enables Emergency Responders to quickly locate helpful in-

formation regarding your medical history. Emergency Responders, Firefighters,

Paramedics and Police are trained to look for the Vial of Life sticker and obtain

medical information from the vial.

Lap #2 Christmas in October

To partner with Liveable Neighborhoods and the NBR’s to assist with reviewing

applicants and assessing home repairs.

Lap #3 Night Out Against Crime

To hold a community wide event to show unity among the neighbor-

hood groups and law enforcement to encourage and promote efforts to

reduce crime. Event was held on Aug. 3, 2010

Lap #4 Communities in Schools

Communities in Schools staff will work with neighborhood groups around the

Whittier and M.E. Pearson schools to create partnerships and programs that will

benefit the children as well as the neighborhood.

Lap #5 Landlord Training Program

To teach landlords how to keep illegal activity out of rental property. Twenty

three people were in attendance at the training held on Sept. 23, 2010.

Lap #6 Walking School Bus Program

Bridging the Gap is partnering with Liveable Neighborhoods to

recruit volunteers to help walk a group of children to and from

school safely. Currently walking school buses are being established

at Frank Rushton, Quindaro and Banneker Elementary Schools.

Lap #7 Senior Citizen Crime Prevention Training

The United Way will conduct a class of older adults about how to start a

neighborhood watch.

Liveable Neighborhoods and Community Policing annually sponsor

the neighborhood group awards event. This year the event was held

on Oct. 18th at the Vox Theatre in Rosedale. Over 260 people at-

tended the event. Awards were presented to outstanding officers,

neighborhood leaders and community partners. Fifty neighborhood

groups received grants from the Unified Government to conduct

projects in their neighborhoods.

Lap #9 Nurturing Neighborhoods

Dream Works is introducing an intervention strategy to increase service capac-

ity call Nurturing Neighbors, a volunteer based program that provides eligible

participants in the community with basic support and services, such as: Com-

panion Services, Home Management, Light Housekeeping, and Yard Work.

Dream Works is seeking volunteers and participants to be matched based on the

services volunteers are willing to perform and the needs of the participants.

Lap #10 Liveable Neighborhoods Portable Recycling Containers

Liveable Neighborhoods has a number of portable recycling containers that

can be used for special events to recycle cans and plastic. The application to

check out a portable recycling container only requires the applicants name,

group name, date of event and date you will return the container. The con-

tainer folds for quick set up and break down. Bags swap out on site.

2010 Wyandotte 500 Project Results Lap #1 Vial of Life Program

Liveable Neighborhoods, Neighborhood Groups, Community Police, Shepherd’s Center and the Fire Dept. have distrib-

uted over 4,000 Vial of Life kits throughout the community.

Lap #2 Christmas in October

Liveable Neighborhoods facilitated meetings and distributed applications for Christmas in October along with develop-

ing a process for residents to apply for assistance with home repair through the Neighborhood Business Revitalization

Groups. As a result, Christmas in October provided assistance to over 250 homes in Kansas City, Kansas in 2010.

Lap #3 Night Out Against Crime

The Night Out Against Crime Event was held on Aug. 3, 2010. Over 200 people attended the event which was held at

Indian Springs due to the extreme heat warnings. Paul Soptick kicked off the event by introducing Rachelle Smith with

Target. Target provided grilled hot dogs, chips and beverages for everyone in attendance. Commissioner Nathan Barnes

presented a proclamation from Mayor Joe Reardon. Police Chief Rick Armstrong and Sheriff Don Ash offered positive

comments about the ongoing partnership between law enforcement and neighborhood groups. The NOAC event also

included the kick off for the Vial of Life Program. Community Police Office Tony Lee and Linda Siemens Director of

Shepherds Center distributed over 200 Vial of Life kits.

Lap #4 Communities in Schools

Lap #5 Landlord Training Program

Twenty five landlords attended the training held at the Neighborhood Resource Center on Sept. 23, 2010. Outcomes for

landlords include: Lower turnover in tenants, less damage to property and lower repair bills, reduced crime, a safer,

more relaxed atmosphere for the tenants and increased property values.

Lap #6 Walking School Bus Program

M.E. Pearson has started a Walking Club on school grounds. Frank Rushton is doing a Walking School Bus and there

are two volunteers signed up for Banneker.

Lap #7 Senior Citizen Crime Prevention Training

The United Way held a training for seniors to learn about crime prevention. Seniors were recruited through Liveable

Neighborhoods. The thirteen seniors in attendance spent 4 hours learning about how to reduce their chances of being a

victim of crime.
