Congratulations Karen Armaiz, Child, Youth & Program Assistant! Karen completed the 13 Modules in the School Age Program as part of her Foundation

Training! Ms. Karen started working in the School Age Care as Summer Hire in June 2011. She demonstrated knowledge and disposition to work with all age groups. Karen was hired in the CYSS Program having a Doc-tor’s Degree in Psychological Counseling.

She used her knowledge and formal education to work with the children

and families as well. Her connection with the children is admirable! Her enthusiasm and dedication motivated her to complete the Foundation Training which is an 18 months pro-gram, in 10 months. Karen’s com-petency level is beyond our expec-tations. Karen is definitely an asset to our CYSS, School Age Care and especially in the Homework Area, where she extends the children’s and youth’s learning and takes them to a higher level. Karen, continue with your professionalism and great dedi-cation! We are proud to have you part of our Team.

Being a parent is a great gift from life itself, we love our children and want the best for them. The purpose of parenting is to provide and prepare our children to survive and thrive in our society. The reality is that our society is becoming a threat for our children. During the school session we have in-ner peace and confidence knowing that our children are at school. What about Summer time? Many chil-dren need to stay home alone because the truth is that some parents don’t have enough income to cover sum-mer camp expenses. And now what…! Here comes STRESS…There may be nothing more heart-breaking than to have one’s child in danger. It touches the most basic of feelings: love, fear, the need to shield one’s young. I would like to share with you some ideas from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on how to keep your children and how to teach them to develop problem–solving skills to protect themselves. At Home1. Teach your children their full names, address, and home telephone number; Make sure they know your full name.

2. Make sure your children know how to reach you at work or on your cell phone.

3. Teach your children how and when to use 911 and make sure your children have a trusted adult to call if they’re scared or have an emergency.

4. Instruct children to keep the door locked and not to open the door to talk to anyone when they are home alone. Set rules with your children about having visitors over when you’re not home and how to answer the telephone.

5. Choose caregivers with care. Obtain references from family, friends, and neighbors. Once you have chosen the caregiver, drop in unexpectedly to see how your children are doing. Ask chil-dren how the experience with the care-giver was and listen carefully to their responses.Out and About6. Take your children on a walking tour of the neighborhood and tell them whose homes they may visit without you.

7. Remind your children that it’s OK to say NO to anything that makes them feel scared, uncomfortable, or con-fused. Teach your children to tell you if anything or anyone makes them feel this way.

8. Teach your children to ask permission before leaving home.

9. Remind your children not to walk or play alone outside.

10. Teach your children to never approach a vehicle, occupied or not, unless they know the owner and are ac-companied by a parent, guardian, or other trusted adult.

11. Practice “what if” situations and ask your children how they would respond. “What if you fell off your bike and you needed help? Who would you ask?”

12. Teach your children to check in with you if there is a change of plans.

13. During family outings, establish a central, easy-to-locate spot to meet for check-ins or should you get separated.

14. Teach your children how to locate help at theme parks, sports stadiums, shopping malls, and other public places. Also, identify those people who they can ask for help, such as uniformed law enforcement, security guards and store clerks with nametags.

15. Help your children learn to recog-nize and avoid potential risks, so that they can deal with them if these happen.

16. Teach your children that if anyone tries to grab them, they should make a scene and make every effort to get away by kicking, screaming, and resisting.

To learn more about child safety, visit www.take25.org.

Protecting our children is our respon-sibility as parents, teachers, and care-givers… we can’t be with them at all times, make sure they have the tools to deal with a risky situation. But most of all let them know how much you love them… as many times as possible.

Enjoy your summer!Talk safety, practice safety. show safety!

Buchanan military community mem-bers are able to sign up for certain child care programs with the help of FMWR’s software program WebTrac, a part of its RecTrac system. Even though the garrison FMWR di-rectorate has been using RecTrac internally for about 10 years, cur-rently, customers don’t see a lot of what RecTrac does. With WebTrac however, Garrison customers can interact with FMWR on a different level by signing up and paying for FMWR programs and services online.

“Parents are able to pay their CYS Services child care bills online using a password and login e-mailed to them from FMWR,” said Thomas Adder-ley, FMWR CYS Services Functional Technology Specialist. “Parents can also pay fees and register for some School of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills classes,” he added. “In addition, they can sub-mit child care inquiries from home, print child care tax statements; it really does allow them to manage their own accounts. Not only is it a huge convenience for parents to be able to sign up and pay for programs without having to come to Parent Central Services, but it relieves our clerks of a lot of the more mundane tasks, freeing them up to provide a higher order of customer service,” Adderley said. “Plus it gives parents the freedom to do things when it’s most convenient for them. Instead of being tied to our office hours and location, parents can handle their account when and where it works

for them—so long as they have an active internet connection.”

In addition to CYS Services, several other FMWR programs take advantage of WebTrac at Fort Buchanan. For example, the Golf Club uses the pro-gram to schedule golfers’ tee times, Outdoor Recreation customers can sign up for recreational programs, such as kayak trips to the Bio Bay.

“Once your account is approved, you’re in,” Angel Viruet said. “WebTrac is intertwined with all of the FMWR programs,” Viruet added. “It’s an all-in-one software solution for FMWR at the point of sale. We see its use growing”. WebTrac also keeps tabs on customer preferences, such as what kinds of activities a family normally signs up for. The long-term goal is to deliver custom-tailored information to fami-lies on programs FMWR believes they would like to participate in. For now, however, the program is mainly focused of giving Fort Bu-chanan community families the con-venience of handling some FMWR transactions from home.

La Noche de San Juan, or Saint John’s Night, is celebrated annually on the night of June 23rd, the eve of the birthday of Saint John the Bap-tist. At exactly midnight between June 23rd and 24th, people walk backward into the water and fall backwards into it. This is done three times in a row. The water is said to be “blessed”, so dipping into it is supposed to cleanse you of the bad things and bring good luck or at least help ward off evil throughout the year. Sponsored by:

The San Juan Night Party kicks off at 8:00 pm and will go until 1:30 am on June 23rd at the Water Spout.
