Importance of Volunteers to the Army Mission

The Army Volunteer Corps mission statement reflects the Army tradition of caring for its own and encouraging care for others in the pursuit of a cohe-sive community. Closely related to this tradition are central Army concepts re-garding volunteer service:

• Volunteer programs promote selfless service across generations• Volunteer programs promote per-sonal and Professional development• Volunteer programs provide im-proved well-being and quality of life, a sense of belonging and ownershipValue Added:• During times of crisis and increased need for homeland security, strong, vi-tal volunteer-based organizations bring confidence to Soldiers that their fami-lies will have the support and resources to manage during deployments.• Army volunteers provide a special link between installation organizations, Army communities and the civilian community. Through daily activities and personal experiences, volunteers often become aware of situations and

conditions that require formal atten-tion and official consideration. • When resources are stretched and stressed, volunteers sustain and add vitality to programs that support Soldiers and their families.• Volunteers help market Army pro-grams and services by sharing their knowledge with community members. These volunteers lend credibility to these services because they are also members of the community.• Volunteers learn or improve skills and gain work experience that can increase self-confidence and improve mar-ketability for paid positions. • Army volunteers learn about com-munity resources making them more self-reliant.Register and become an Army Volunteer Corps at Fort Buchanan at myarmyonesource.com or request for assistance at the Office of Army Volun-teer Corps at Building 390 Crane Loop St., Suite 101 or contact us at 787-707-3365.

After 9/11, when the nation was still in shock over the unprecedented at-tack on U.S. soil, Shannen Rossmiller, a country judge and mother of three in rural Montana, was formulating a plan. Soon she was devouring literature on Islamic culture, teaching herself Arabic, and preparing to infiltrate the central nervous system of global terror: online networks. Her efforts succeeded be-yond imagination. Posing as an Islamic terrorist under dozens of screen aliases, she joined forces with the FBI and start-ed trolling jihadist chat rooms, striking up conversations at 3am with men as far away as Pakistan, and amassing evidence against an array of suspected terrorists both at home and abroad. Her work laid the foundation for the online searches so crucial to law en-forcement’s fight against terror today. Shannen’s husband, Randy, uncovered her double life after a chat room ter-rorist wiped out the family computer and reports rolled in that the Rossmill-ers were being targeted for reprisal. Undeterred, Shannen started work-ing with the FBI on sting operations, involving everything from jihadist cells to weapons caches to bomb plots, and bringing many of her targets to justice, as well as pioneering the digital entrap-ment tactics that are at the forefront of today’s war on terror. This is the story of one woman’s unexpected courage and how it changed the face of this global struggle.

Hot Weather Training TipsIn recent weeks on the island, and one of the main topics in the news, have been the extreme heat we have been experiencing topping 90 de-grees and very little rain. For those that practice Outdoor Activities here are some tips to keep in mind:1. Use light fabric and light colored clothing: These repel the heat better.2. Drink plenty of fluids: Preferably water, if exercising for more than an hour electrolytes drinks are recom-mended. If running, 4 or 5 ounces per mile is recommended.3. Do not consume alcohol or caffeine drinks: These contributes to dehydra-tion.4. Consume fruit throughout the day: They should be part of our everyday diet anyway as they contain water.5. Wear sun protection: SPF 15 or above and reapply when necessary.6. Pay attention to the weather forecast.7. If possible get in the shade as often as possible.8. Try exercising early in the day or later in the afternoon or night when it’s cooler.By: Roberto Fernandez, Recreation Specialist Fort Buchanan Fitness Center Certified Personal Trainer; NSCA & Cooper Institute

Bowling Center News:History of Fort Buchanan’s Bowling CenterFort Buchanan’s Bowling Center opened its doors on August 28, 1992, almost 20 years ago. Originally it was under the command of DPCA Major Jerome Hesby and ADCFA Tom Kulina, then Randy La Fave was assigned Business Manager until he was promoted to the Community Operations Division Chief (COD). On March 9, 1995, Luis R. Torres became Business Manager of the Bowling Center until today. During the past 20 years many good things have happened at the Bowling Center. We have around 15 games of 300 with the first done around July 1993 by Edgardo Ruíz; also we have seven games of 299 with the first one around July 1993 by Mr Gaby Janer and one game of 298 done by Mr Jean Francisco Pérez on July 1993. Also we have over 50 series of 700 and three Series of 800.

We’ve also had numerous tournaments like the PR National Guard, the Puerto Rico All Start Bowling Association Monthly Tournaments, the Coca Cola Tournament, the Know Call Pepsi Cola for the Junior Program, Memorial Day Tournament, the Junior USBC Annual Tournament and the Island Wide Cham-pionship Bowling tournaments that take place during August.

We have various leagues like the Adult Bowling Leagues, One Senior League, a Ladies League and a junior program now called USBC Youth League. The Junior league started in 1993 and eventually grew to over 200 kids ages 4 to 21. The league’s first years were very successful. In 1996 Jorge Toledo, a youth bowler from Fort Buchanan represented Puerto Rico at The National Coca Cola Tournament in Ohio and finished in 5th place, in this tournament kids from all over the United States compete. In 1997, Iris Vega participated at Tennessee and finished 15th place. In 2000 at Las Vegas Nevada, Debbie Acevedo finished 1st Place at the National Level. For the last two years 2011 and 2012 we’ve won the Copa Orlando A Iz-quierdo Muñoz at the Bolera Caribe in Ponce Puerto Rico and on July 2012 the League went to the Dominican Republic to compete in the 9th Torneo Internacional Infantil-Juvenil at the Sebelen Bowling Center and won First place in the Category C on teams and Doubles. The league plays every Saturday from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm from August to May every year.

The Bowling Center has also been recog-nized by the Army and in 2003 the Business Manager, Mr. Luis R. Torres was selected the Excellence In Manage-ment Award for Army Wide Medium Size Bowling Center.

I would like to thank our employees for an outstanding job during these last 20 years, thatare still helping me. They are Mr. Victor Negrón, Edwin Rivera, Rafael Burgos and Julio Moyeno they have been with the Bowling Center for the last 20 years. Also thanks to Mr. Iván Morales who was an integral part of the Bowling Center until he was promoted to be the DFMWR ISO in 2000. Again, thanks for all your support during the last 20 years. Come see the best teams play on the 3rd Island Wide Bowling Tournament from August 31 to September 2, 2012. By: Luis R. Torres, Bowling Center Business Manager

This year Fort Buchanan’s 4th of July Celebration was attended by those who would not let the rain showers stop them fromenjoying the games, music, dancing, food and fireworks. Most of all, those who value the importance of remembering the historic events that made possible the freedom our Nation enjoys today.Top notch musical entertainment such as Batukealo, Back to the 80’s Music Band and NG-2 transformed the parking lot into a dance floor. Children had an awsome time with the rides, crafts and games and to top it all the fireworks at the end of the evening were spectacular! Garrison Commander, COL Caryn S. Heard, with 24 hours in command, presented her message to attendees as a preamble for the fireworks display. Thanks to all our sponsors for contributing greatly to the success of the event!
