Delta Arts Center is having an auction to celebrate our 40th anniversary! Please join us Saturday December 1 to preview the art works that will be in our live auction on Thursday December 13th. Both events will be at 7:00 pm at the Delta Arts Center 2611 New Walkertown Road Winston-Salem, NC. Jonathan Green is a painter and printmaker of Gullah heritage. He studied at the Art
Institute of Chicago, and currently lives in South Carolina. He first exhibited works at
Winston-Salem Delta Fine Arts, Inc. (WSDFA) in the 1997 group show “An Artistic Journey:
Selections from the Hewitt Collection of African-American Art,” and more recently showed
works on paper at the Delta Arts Center (DAC) in 2006.
3. Leo Twiggs: "A Note from Home", 2005 Batik on Cotton, 4" x 4" (Framed 16" x 16") AE: $350—$500
Dr. Leo Twiggs was born in South Carolina. He earned his BA from Claflin University, his MA
from New York University, where he studied with Hale Woodruff, and his doctorate in Art
Education from the University of Georgia. He retired as Professor of Art at South Carolina
State University in 2000. His relationship with WSDFA extends back to our first two
exhibitions, held in 1972 and 1974. His batik paintings have been on
view in four solo shows since then, in 1984, 1993, 1998, and 2005. He
has also written catalog entries for Delta exhibits.
4. Tommie Lee Robinson: "Study of Jasmine", 2001 Pencil, 7" x 5" (Framed 16" x 12¾") AE: $250—$350
Tommie Lee Robinson is a painter who exhibited at the DAC in the
1995 show “Evidence of a Culture.”

5. Leo Twiggs: "Waiting", 2004 Batik on Silk, 6¾" x 4¾" (Framed 10½" x 8½") AE: $350—$500
Dr. Leo Twiggs was born in South Carolina. He earned his BA from

Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe was born in Chicago in 1951, and
earned a BFA in Photography from Copper Union in New York in
1975. Her photographs have been widely shown and published;
and were exhibited in a solo show at WSDFA in 1998.
She also participated in the 2007 exhibition that
celebrated our 35th anniversary.
7. Ann Tanksley: "Solitude", 2005, Monoprint, 6" x 4" (Framed 13" x 11")
AE: $650—$800
Ann Tanksley is a painter, born in Pittsburgh in 1934.
She graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now the Carnegie Mellon
University) in Pittsburgh, and also studied at the Art Students League, Parsons School of
Design, and the New School for Social Research, all in New York. She first exhibited works at
the DAC in the 1997 group show “An Artistic Journey: Selections
from the Hewitt Collection of African-American Art,” and in a
1999 solo exhibit.
8. Carl Karni Bain: "Woman in Veil", 2011 Painting-Acrylic, 9½" x 7¾" (Framed 12½" x 10½") AE: $500—$1,000
Carl Karni Bain is a mixed media artist. He studied at the
California College of Arts and Craft in Oakland, CA, and has

exhibited nationally, including the San Francisco Bay area, NC
and NY. His work was presented in a solo show at the DAC in
2001.
9. Nick Bragg: "Untitled", Watercolor Painting
AE: $500—$750
Nick Bragg is a painter and Winston-Salem resident.
He was executive director of Reynolda House
Museum of American Art for 29 years before his
retirement in 1999.
10. Francis H. Brown, Jr.: "Counting the House",
1984 Painting, 16" x 20½" (Framed 22½" x 28")
AE: $500—$750
Francis “Sonny” Brown is a painter and Winston-
Salem native, who attended Howard University. His
work was included in the first exhibit organized by WSDFA in 1972, and he has exhibited
many times since, including shows in 1982, 1986, 1992, and 1995. He was also represented
in the “Blurring Racial Boundaries” group show in 2006.
11. Ann Tanksley: "Jumping the Sun", Linocut A/P, 3¾" x 4½" (Framed 8½" x 9¼") AE: $500—$750
12. Richard Powell: “Richard Wright Series: Kwame’s Black

Richard Powell is a curator, author, and the John Spenser
Barrett Professor of Art and History at Duke University in
Durham, NC.
13. Jack Hernon: "Rusty Pandora's Flutter", 2009 Mixed Media on Canvas, 40" x 30" AE: $550—$800
Jack Hernon is a 2009 recipient of a W-S Forsyth County Arts
Council project grant. For the past 30 years, Jack Hernon has energized careers as a
professional color specialist and as a fine artist.

14. Norton Barnhill: "Untitled", 2012, Mixed Media, 96" x 32" AE:

Norton Barnhill, a Winston-Salem native and former professional
basketball player, is a abstract artist and painter. He exhibited his work
at the Center in a solo show in 2011.
15. Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe: "Untitled", 2004,
Photograph, 12" x 9" AE: $450—$600
Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe was born in Chicago in 1951, and

Raul Montero is a Cuban-born artist who exhibited paintings at

17. Carmen de Jesus: "Susan Taylor", 2011 Photograph, 21" x

Carmen de Jesus is a Puerto-Rican born photographer who received
her BFA degree from the City College of New York. She exhibited at
the Center in the 2001 show “Black Off Broadway” and in the 2011
“Releasing the Spirit: Faces of the Theatre” solo exhibition.
18. Debra Priestly: "Strange Fruit 28", 2007 Graphite, gouache & archival ink on paper, 12" x 9" (Framed 15" x 15") AE: $500—$750
Debra Priestly exhibited at the Center in 2005 as part of the
"Five Contemporary Artists in a New Space" exhibit. Debra is a
visual artist whose mixed media works offer intimate stories
of her personal and collective African-American history
through metaphorical use of photographic imagery.
19. J. Eugene Grigsby: "Early Morning Sunrise", 2007
Serigraph, 3½" x 4¾" (Framed 6¾" x 8¼") AE: $800—

J. Eugene Grigsby, born in Greensboro, NC in 1918 is an art
professor, fine artist, and author represented in "1972
Reflections" show in 1996 and lectured at WSDFA in 1999.
20. James Biggers: "Egyptian Horus", 2008 Colored Pencil,
28" x 20" (Framed 37" x 23¾") AE: $750—$1,200
James Biggers (nephew of John Biggers) was born in Gastonia
in 1948. He earned a BA from North Carolina Central
University in 1970, and an MA from Appalachian State
University in 1981, both in Art Education. A painter, he
assisted his uncle, John, on mural paintings commissioned by WSDFA in 1988 and executed

at Winston-Salem State University in 1990-92. His paintings and drawings were exhibited at
the Center in 1997.
21. Lisa Corrine Davis: "Phantom Geometry", 2008, Oil on wood panel, 30" x 22" AE: $800—$950
Lisa Corrine Davis has been exhibited in museums and
galleries throughout the United State and Europe. Her
paintings represent an exploration of racial, social, and
psychological identity. She exhibited at the Center as part of the "Five Contemporary Artists
in a New Space" show.
22. Ann Tanksley: "The Lord is My Shepherd", Print, 8" x 8" AE: $800—$1,000
23. Samella Lewis: "Untitled", 1999, Colored Pencil, 17" x
14" (Framed 25" x 25") AE: $750—$1,250 Dr. Samella Lewis is an artist and art historian, born in New
Orleans in 1924. She received her B.A. degree at Hampton
University, and master and doctorate degrees in Fine Arts and
Art History at the Ohio State University. Her prints have been
widely exhibited, and one was included in WSDFA second
exhibition in 1974. She also exhibited paintings at the DAC in
1989.
24. J. Eugene Grigsby: "Anniversary II", 1981 Signed

Charles Farrar is a wood turner who lives in North
Carolina. He has exhibited at the Center on two
occasions: in 1998 and in 2012.
26. LeRoy Henderson: "Mrs. King & Children at
Poor Peoples Rally", 1968 Photograph, 9" x
13" (Framed 14" x 18") AE: $800—$1,025
LeRoy Henderson is a photographer, born in
Richmond, VA in 1936. His work was exhibited in
“Celebration: 9 Artists,” which commemorated the
35th anniversary of WSDFA in 2007.
27. Philemona Williamson: "Untitled", 2012, Oil
painting, 12" x 16" AE: $1,500—$2,000
Philemona Williamson is an artist currently based in New Jersey. She earned a BA from
Bennington College and an MA from New York University.
Her paintings were exhibited at WSDFA in the 2005 show
“Five Contemporary Voices in a New Space” which
inaugurated the current location of the Delta Arts Center.
28. Ernest Crichlow: "On Earth, Peace", 1978, Print, 4½" x
6" AE: $1,500—$1,650
Ernest Crichlow (1914–2005) was born in Brooklyn, NY of
Caribbean parents. He studied art at the School of
Commercial Illustrating and Advertising Art in New York and
New York University. Crichlow started work as an artist in a
studio sponsored by the WPA (Work Progress Administration). He first exhibited at the
Harlem Community Center in 1938. His works have been exhibited at WSDFA in 2009 as
part of the Hewitt Collection.

29. Frank Wimberly: "Untitled" Signed Digital Photo Print,
8" x 8" (Framed 9¾" x 9¾") AE: $1,000—$1,600 Frank Wimberly, born in 1926, works in an Abstract
Expressionist tradition. Wimberly has shown extensively
throughout the New York Metropolitan area and was
included in the 2007 WSDFA show curated by June Kelly.
30. J. Eugene Grigsby: "Untitled" Limited Edition Lithograph, 4¾" x 8" (Framed 8½" x
13") AE: $750—$1,500 J. Eugene Grigsby, born in Greensboro, NC in 1918 is an art
professor, fine artist, and author represented in "1972
Reflections" show in 1996 and lectured at the DAC in 1999.
31. Hale Woodruff: "Untitled", Lithograph, 3" x 4" (Framed 8¼"
x 9¾") AE: $1,500—$2,500 Hale Woodruff (1900-1980) was an African-American artist known
for his mural paintings and prints. One of the most famous
examples of his work is the three-panel "Amistad Mutiny" murals
at Talladega College in Talladega, AL (now traveling throughout
United States). He studied at John Hernon Art Institute and Harvard University.
32. John Biggers: "Family in Orange & Blue", 1986 Lithograph, 29½" x 31½" (Framed 29½" x 35") AE: $4,500—$6,000
John Biggers (1924-2001) was a muralist, born in
Gastonia, NC. He founded the art department at Texas
University for Negroes, now known as Texas Southern
University, in 1949. In 1957, he received a UNESCO
fellowship to travel to Africa, becoming one of the first
African-American artists to travel to Africa. John and
his nephew, James Biggers, completed the "Origins" and "Ascension" murals gifted to WSSU
by WSDFA in 1992. John's first NC show was curated in 1989 by WSDFA.

33. Elizabeth Catlett: "Cartas", 1986, Lithograph, 29" x 21" (Framed 30" x 22") AE: $6,000—$8,000
Elizabeth Catlett (1915-2012) was an American born
sculptor and printmaker best known for the black
expressionistic sculptures she produced during the 1960's
and 1970's. Her works were included in the very first two
exhibitions organized by WSDFA in 1972 and 1974. A solo
exhibition of her works was held at the W-S Urban League
and curated by WSDFA in 1986, and again in 2008 at the
DAC.
34. Lois Mailou Jones: "Sketch for Mr. Brown", 1936 Pencil, 13½" x 9¾" (Framed 20" x 16") AE: $10,000—$15,000
Lois Mailou Jones (1905-1998) was an artist who painted
and influenced others during the Harlem Renaissance
and beyond during her long artistic and teaching career.
She exhibited at the DAC in 1972, 1984, and 2008.

Frank Wimberly, born in 1926, works in an Abstract Expression-
ist tradition. Wimberly has shown extensively throughout the
New York Metropolitan area and was included in the 2007
WSDFA show curated by June Kelly.
2. Tom Feelings: "Untitled", Silk Screen Print, 2½" x
2½" (Framed 7" x 7¼")

Tom Feelings (1933–2003) was an artist and illustrator, au-
thor, teacher, and activist. His work framed the African-
American experience. His most famous book is "The Middle
Passage".
3. Shanta Hauser: "Good Morning America", 2012, Acrylic & Oil, 18" x 12" AE: $50—$150
Shanta Hauser is a Winston-Salem artist and mentee of James Huff
who showed at the DAC in the 2010 Invitational show.

Bill Gramley is a graduate of Davidson College, a retired

Rochelle Spears is a Winston-Salem native and local artist of gourd
masks. His work is also sold in the DAC gallery.

7. Gregory Gilliam: "Journey", 2009, Acrylic, 14" x

Gregory Gilliam, a native of Winston-Salem, is a self-
taught artist who won the People's Choice Award at the
WSDFA 2010 Invitational show.
8. Barbara Madden Swain: "Untitled" , Ceramic Stoneware,
12"H (circum. 29") AE: $150 - $200
Barbara Madden Swain is a ceramicist, and a graduate of Howard
University (BFA). She exhibited at the Center in the 2007-08 show
“From This Earth: Ceramics by Winnie Owens-Hart and her Fol-
lowers.”
