How good it feels to give these giſts freely, joyfully, but also with the expectaon of something in return. A Chanukah Message from Rabbi Micah

One of our favorite songs at The Davis Acade-my starts with the words, “We are gifts and we are blessings.” That song, L’dor V’dor, is sung at nearly every special school celebra-tion.

If you ask our children, they’ll tell you that they love Chanukah because of the presents. But if prodded a bit, I believe they would in-evitably grant that they love Chanukah not only for the presents but for the presence. The mindful and authentic presence of family and friends, gathered around the Chanukiah or at other celebrations—this is what our children value most.

This Chanukah let us give the ultimate gifts—the gifts of self, of love, of presence, of quali-ty time, of laughter, of shared activities, of kind words, and of generous attention. How good it feels to give these gifts freely, joyfully, but also with the expectation of something in return. That something in return will be a holiday season that readies us to enter into 2017 with the strength and wisdom that we need in order to keep our focus on the things that matter most to us, our children, and to those we love.

I Had a Little Dreidel (a silly version )

I had a little dreidel, I

made it out of bread; it

looked so very yummy...I

ate it up instead!

I had a little dreidel, I

made it out of soap; I put it in the bath-

tub...to see if it would float!

I had a little dreidel, I made it out of snow;

and when it became summer, oh where did

my dreidel go?

What else could YOU make a dreidel out of?

Chanukah Celebration, Volume 4 December 18, 2016

Fun with Flashlights

Color Mixing with Lights – Use 3-4 flashlights and cover each with a different color of cello-phane paper. Wrap the cellophane on end of each flashlight with tape or rubber band. Once the flashlights are ready, go into a dark room and shine the flashlights on a white wall. Exper-iment by shining different color lights onto the wall and see what color you can create.

Flashlight Word Hunt – tape sight words onto the wall. Turn off the lights and have your child hunt for the sight words with the flashlight.

Flashlight Reading – turn off the lights and read a book by flashlight.

Download animal silhouettes. Cut out the sil-houettes and tape to skewers. Shine the flash-light on the animal silhouettes and you will see it displayed on the wall. Create and share sto-ries with the animals.

Build with magnetic tile blocks and shine the light on the tiles.

Create shadows with hands or finger puppets against blank wall and shine the light to see

how many shadow puppets you can create.
