With the support of the Parish Priest the PPC undertook a thorough review of the parish’s leadership and administration structures. Reasons for the review and future focussed change. We have declining numbers of priests; our current priests are aging and there are not enough new priests being ordained to cover the shortfall in NZ and globally. Moreover, the outlook would suggest that this will not improve. We are already seeing a few priests having to be shared across parishes in NZ, and several parishes becoming one. It is also important to understand the role and responsibilities of the laity and the important part that all parishioners play in the effective running of the church. The role of the Parish Priest was never meant to be centred around the day to day administrative events of the parish. Furthermore, with the shifting complexities of the legal environment, more onerous health and safety and property requirements these tasks are beyond the capabilities and training of a Priest. Not to mention taking care of the administration of a parish pulls the priest away from his primary function which is to provide spiritual and pastoral care to the community. Additionally, the Marist community that serve St Anne’s have a tradition of moving priests every 3-6 years. Each new priest brings their own management style, agendas and areas of focus. If we want to be future focussed as a parish, we need to have a leadership and administration structure that is strong in its ability to manage and administer the Parish. The very nature of the Priest is that they come and go, but the Parish and the people stay for life. The review lead to the establishment of three new part time, paid roles within the parish. These new roles mean the disestablishment of the former Parish Secretary and Parish receptionist roles. The new structure will comprise of Operations Manager, Communications Administrator and Receptionist. There will be more information about these roles and how you might apply for them if you are interested on the website. However, these roles are not enough to create the change we need to ensure our parish flourishes now and in the future. St Anne’s parish has low numbers of volunteers given the size and we need more people to help where they can. We all have gifts that can be use in so many ways to add to the life of the church, please reach out and ask for ways to be more involved. Theresa Simson has been the most zealous and ardent servant to the parish for many years, 21 of these in full time employment. We owe her a great deal of thanks and gratitude for her unquestionable service to St Anne’s parish as a volunteer and paid employee. Theresa will no longer work as our Parish Secretary. The appointment of Vicky Rogers as Part time receptionist and office person will take up the new role this Tuesday. The Office will open from Tuesday-Friday 9.00 am -3.00 pm.
