Gold Science Mark We are excited to announce that our school has been award- ed the Primary Science Quality Mark at Gold level. This nationally recognised award demonstrates a commitment to excellence in science teaching and learning at Little Sutton. The award enables schools to work together to share good practice and is supported by professional development led by local experts. It encourages teacher autonomy and innovation while at the same time offering a clear framework for develop- ment in science subject leadership, teaching and learning. Observations in our school's report include: “Science is clearly highly valued at your school; children are actively engaged in their learning and they enjoy a wide and rich range of scientific experiences. There is a clear vision for teaching and learning and all staff are involved in developing the curriculum. In addition, there is a robust system for monitoring and there are excellent links with other schools and organisations. It is clear that you have a very supportive staff team.” The Primary Science Quality Mark is led by the University of Hertfordshire, School of Education in partnership with the Primary Science Teaching Trust. It is supported by the Royal Society for Chem- istry, the Ogden Trust and the Association for Science Education. Jane Turner, PSQM National Director explains that: “Gaining a Primary Science Quality Award is a significant achievement for a school. The profile and quality of science teaching and learning in each awarded school is very high. Children are engaging with great science both in and outside the classroom, developing positive attitudes towards science as well as secure science understanding and skills. Science subject leaders, their colleagues, head teachers, children, parents and governors should be very proud.” Our thanks go to Miss Peck who has responsibility for science and has led it with such vision and enthusiasm, providing our children with engaging and fun experiences. Parent Governor Vacancy We will shortly have a vacancy for a Parent Governor to serve on our Governing Body for a period of four years. A letter has been sent home to all parents and nominations must be received in school by 5pm on Monday 18th September. If you would like to find out more, please contact Lynda Johnston, Clerk to the Governors in the school office. Author Visit On Wednesday, the Year Five and Six children were fortunate enough to have a visit from Steve Cole, author of books "Aliens Stink", "Stop those monsters" and the series of Astrosaurs books. He entertained the children with his writing and musical compositions which they great- ly enjoyed. During the assembly he shared how he plays around with words in poems and drama and how this inspires his writing. He also shared his writing techniques and how his stories evolved. He gave the children a brief insight into his novels, including ninja hamsters, bizarre monsters and lots of aliens. In conclusion, he helped the children cre- ate characters they could use in their own stories. Some of the children bought the books and Steve signed them personally. Many thanks to Steve for inspiring the children and to Bishop Vesey school for organis- ing the visit

E-Safety Tip of the Week Reporting extremist content online is simple, if you see it, report it. Visit www.seeitreport.org to find out how to report it on the relevant s ocial media platforms.

Music Tuition Music lessons for existing pupils commenced this week. The teachers have also seen most of the children who have applied to learn this year. By the end of next week you will have received a letter to inform you which instrument your child has been allocated. Unfortunately some instruments are significantly over-subscribed, so if your child has not been offered their preferred instrument we hope that they are happy with one of the alternatives offered. If you have any queries regarding music tuition, please contact the school office who will be happy to help.

School Photographs It has been a busy day today with the photographer in school. Individual and sibling photos were taken and these will be available to purchase. The school is fortunate to earn commission from every order placed. Proofs will be sent out to parents as soon as we receive them.

New Reception Children Our Reception children have been in school full time from Wednesday onwards. I have to say what a wonderful start they have made! They have settled in the mornings quickly and have really enjoyed their lunchtimes. Staff have been on hand to help with healthy choices. I have also been most impressed with their good manners. We are delighted to welcome them to the school and look forward to a lovely year ahead.

Year 5 Space Invasion On Wednesday morning, Year 5 had an exciting investigation to perform. During the night, what appeared to be a shiny metallic object, resembling a rocket, was found on key stage one playground. Year 5 took pictures, sketched diagrams, theorised and shared ideas of where the mysterious object could have come from. They spent their English lesson creating effective open questions to ask a witnesses and shed light on the ominous object. After a whole morning hot seating (Mr Terry was an 'eye-witness') and investigat-ing, Year 5 had all they

needed for this week's big writing in which they have produced their own news-paper reports detailing their discovery. I think all of year 5 have enjoyed the introduction to their new science topic 'Earth and Beyond' and look forward to more exciting learning opportunities in the future.
