Week One Vocabulary

predator - animal that hunts other animals for food

prey - animal that is hunted by other animals

carnivore - animal that eats only other animals

mammal - classification of warm blooded, fur-covered animals that reproduce via live birth and

produce milk for their young

feline - cat

diurnal - to be awake during the day and asleep at night

nocturnal - to be awake at night and asleep during the day

crepuscular - to be awake at dawn (when the sun rises) and dusk (when the sun sets) but sleep

most of the day and night

domesticated - to be kept as pets, usually indicates a more agreeable temperament than their

wild counterparts

feral - wild, the opposite of domestic

sterilization - the surgical procedure that ensures an animal cannot produce offspring

spay - the removal of the ovaries from a female animal, to prevent unwanted pregnancy and

ovarian cancer

neuter - the removal of the testis from a male animal, to prevent unwanted pregnancy and

testicular cancer
