Helen McKinneyIn loving memory of
The Literacy Center had the good fortune of meeting Mrs. Helen McKinney several years ago. We invited Helen to present the Gordon R. McKinney Memorial Service Award, named after her late husband, at our annual Literacy Celebration event. Gordon was a Board President of The Literacy Center and an active supporter of literacy in our community who passed away in 1996. The award honors an individual or organization who gives tremendous effort to support literacy in the Evansville area. Helen accepted our invitation to annually present this award to the winner. Thus a friendship began. Helen enjoyed the opportunities to meet the adult students whose lives had been changed through their work with our volunteer tutors. Helen heard first-hand how students were able to read to their children, to advance in their jobs, and to gain confidence to compete in a reading world. Helen understood that the simple idea of “Each one teach one” is a mission The Literacy Center takes seriously.Helen passed away on October 18, 2011, but she left an endowment that will enable The Literacy Center to continue making a positive impact on literacy in our community. The Gordon R. McKinney Memorial Service Award, engraved with the names of all recognized, hangs in The Literacy Center office. Our in-house library is named after Gordon and Helen. But their greatest contribution is in the lives of the students who come in to use our Literacy Lab and to work with their tutors in an effort to break the chains of illiteracy.Helen and Gordon made an investment in the future of our citizens and created a lasting legacy. We are humbled by their generosity and we will continue to fight the good fight and uphold the commitment to our organization they so very much believed in.

Each One, Teach One- It Makes a Difference
The Original Starfish Story There was a young man walking down a deserted beach just before dawn. In the distance he saw a frail old man. As he approached the old man, he saw him picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the sea. The young man gazed in wonder as the old man again and again threw the small starfish from the sand to the water. He asked, “Old man, why do you spend so much energy doing what seems to be a waste of time.” The old man explained that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun. “But there must be thousands of beaches and millions of starfish!” exclaimed the young man. “How can you make a difference?” The old man looked at the small starfish in his hand and as he threw it to the safety of the sea, he said, “It makes a difference to this one!”
