Please see below Year 1 Week Four activities for your home learning. Reading activities during the day are in
addition to your usual bedtime reading. The activities outlined below are aimed at morning learning which follows
usual school timetables. Please use this as a guide and do not feel pressured to complete all the activities listed.
Week 4 Day 1
Spelling
List this week’s spellings - Week 2
Now write a sentence containing each word.
English
Creative writing: Aim of this week is to write a short narrative and describe a setting.

Gabby is walking on the beach and finds a bottle of bubbles - when she blows it she gets transported into fantasy.
She has fun riding on bubbles and meets people and things on her way.
I wonder where the little girl will go on her adventure? I wonder who she will meet?
Create a story plan using pictures and words/ short sentences to map out the story that you will write later in the
week.

Place Value: Comparing numbers
We are revisiting comparing numbers using < > and = this week.
Go through lesson presentation ‘Chomp the Greedy Crocodile’. Remind yourself what the different symbols mean
and using the words greater than/less than/ equal to.
On your paper provided, write down 20 numbers between 1 and 100. Use the croc symbols to compare your
numbers. E.g. 12 < 24. Could you explain your reasoning to an adult? E.g. 12 is less than 24 because it has 1 ten and 2
ones. 24 has 2 tens and 4 ones, so 12 is less than 24.

Topic- Science
Sea Animals:
Go through the ‘Sea Creatures’ slideshow to learn some facts about sea
creatures.
-Can you make up your own sea creature using different features of the
sea creatures shown.
-Do you have any other favourite sea creatures that you could include in
your new creation? Could you have a shark head, penguin body and
octopus tentacles?
-What would it be called? A shocktoguin? What will it eat? Be creative!
Send some pictures of what you have created if you can.

Practise your spellings for the week.
English
Look at the ‘Noun phrases’ slideshow linked below.
Use your plan to write descriptive sentences about the setting (where the story takes place) using what you have
learnt from the noun phrases slideshow.
Think about your senses- What does it look like/ sound like/ smell like etc.
Examples of expanded noun phrases:
She saw lots of beautiful, sparkly shells. She drifted through the shimmering, blue water.
She heard….
Maths
Go through lesson presentation ‘Day 2 and Day 4 Compare numbers’ pages 1-23.
Complete the activities on the squared paper provided. Remember, we can draw ‘tens’ and ‘ones’ as dienes using a
line to represent a ten and a dot to represent a one. E.g. = 10 = 1

Can you play musical bumps with a sibling or an adult and move to the tempo of the song? E.g. A slow song you
would move around slowly and a fast song you would move around quickly? Have fun!

Day 3

Practise your weekly spellings
Challenge: Can you unscramble these spellings (Clue- they are your weekly spellings).

Use your plan from day one and descriptions to write the beginning of the story.
Remember this is your time to be creative, but don’t forget capital letters, finger
spaces, full stops. Use the ‘How to write a good story’ sheet to help you check your
story (linked on website).
Maths
Complete Classroom Secrets ‘Year 1 Compare numbers Varied Fluency’ sheets.
Choose at least 4 questions from each page to answer. If you have access to a printer,
answer them on the sheet, or if not use the
squared paper provided to you.
Reading
Read for 15 minutes to an adult or sibling.

Go through ‘Under the Sea What Am I?’ interactive powerpoint. Can you guess the sea creatures being described?
Can you test an adult at the same time?
Choose one/two sea creatures and write down some facts you know about them. You could make your own fact file
using the example!
Day 4
Spellings
Practise your spellings in different ways.
English
Write the middle part of your story. Who did your character meet/ what did she do?
Remember to use describing words (adjectives) to make it interesting and to paint a picture for the reader. Use ‘and’
to join clauses (but remember this is only usually once in a sentence!).
Can you include some interesting sentence starters to make your writing more interesting? Examples are linked on
website.
Maths
Go through ‘Day 2 and Day 4 compare numbers lesson presentation’ pages 24-38. On your squared paper complete
the activities listed. Can you verbalise your reasoning to an adult? Remember to use ‘I know this because’.
Reading
Read the ebook linked below with your adult. Can you predict what might happen next?
