Types and Classes of Formula R vehiclesFrom micro to maxi we have it all. Formula R has Remote Control cars to suit any space from 2 square metres up to large carparks and halls. Listed below are classes of cars. All our events feature a range of models and will give you an experience like none other. Vehicles are a mix of 4 wheel drive and 2 wheel drive.

On-Road Classes

“On-Road” RC models are vehicles generally designed to run on smooth hard surfaces. This presents a wide range of possibilities for track construction. Virtually any surface is suitable from hard wooden floors of a school hall through to compacted dirt or clay miniature speedway ovals. Carparks, playgrounds, driveways, garages and workshops could all be used. One of the most popular ways of running all electric powered cars is on an indoor carpet surface. This was immortalised in the 2009 documentary “Carpet Racers” https://youtu.be/-P58Y4soizQ.

Mini Z Micro Cars

These are 125mm long 1/27 scale “Mini Z” cars made by one of the oldest brands of RC equipment. Kyosho have manufactured these little speed merchants since 1999 Formula R has cars and buggies suitable for a wide range of surfaces. These cars are perfect for driver training and racing in small areas. They are also exceptional crowd pullers for events, trade-shows and expo’s. Information about these cars can be found on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini-Z.

Mini M Class

These cars are a Tamiya 1/10 scale M Series front wheel drive chassis with a variety of small car bodies on them such as Mini’s, Fiats and Suzuki’s. They are approximately 300mm in length. M Series use a brushed electric motor and a NiMH battery pack that will give around 20 to 30 minutes of driving before replacing with a fresh battery. Speed is up to 35kph depending on surface, gearing and space. They are rugged cars ideal for all activities from driver training to fast, close hard racing. Information about these cars can be found at: http://tamiyarcmini.com/.

Stock Class Touring Cars

These 1/10 cars are mostly built on a 4 wheel drive Tamiya TT01 chassis with various touring car and sports car body shells. They run brushed electric motors and a NiMH battery pack giving up to 20 minutes of driving. Speed is up to 40kph depending on surface, gearing and space. indoors or outdoors. Wikipedia has a page on the TT01: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamiya_TT-01.

Modified Class Touring Cars

These 1/10 cars are the pinnacle of on-road RC racing. These speedsters are modified or “hopped up” touring cars with a variety of lightweight chassis often built from carbon fibre. They run powerful brushless motors spinning at up to 60,000 RPM that give speeds of anything up to 160kph or even higher depending on space, gearing and surface! The batteries used are lithium polymer (LiPo) 2 or 3 cell (7.4 to 11.1 volts) designed for very high current draw over their running time. Formula R has a great range of modified touring cars, however these rocket ships are for experienced drivers only! An example of a world championship race using these cars is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/VaXLtPGrTGQ.

F Series

F Class cars are rear wheel drive 1/10 scale Formula 1 cars powered by brushed electric motors with a NiMH battery pack. They are very light, have a low centre of gravity, aerodynamically efficient, and have fantastic grip due to their large tyres. As a result they can corner very fast. They are fun and challenging to drive. Speed is up to 45kph depending on various factors mentioned previously. Information on RC Formula 1: http://www.rcformula1.com.au/.index.php.

N Class Nitro Touring Cars

Instead of an electric motor, N class cars use a small two stroke engine of 2.5 to 3.5cc in capacity. They run on a fuel that contains nitromethane, methanol and synthetic oil. Power output is often 3hp plus and RPM can exceed 40,000!! That gives a power to weight ratio equivalent to a leading Formula 1 car! Some of these cars have two speed auto transmissions that allow for speeds up to and often exceeding 100kph! Our N Class cars are built on a tough alloy chassis with touring car and sports car bodies. Information on these amazing nitro motors can be found on Wikipediahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitro_engine

Pan Cars

Pan cars are 2 wheel drive simple but fast low profile vehicles of 1/12 to 1/8 scale. They are powered by either brushless electric or nitro 2 stroke motors and reach some high speeds with fantastic handling. The bodies are designed to create downforce similar to full size Le Mans type sports cars. Pan cars need a smooth clean surface to run on hence the electric versions are mostly used for indoor racing on carpet. Suspension is limited often to one unit on the rear only. They run “foam” tyres which adds to the grip level on the smooth surfaced tracks. Despite their performance they are very robust and relatively easy to drive compared to the high speed modified tourers. An example of Pan Car racing is here: https://youtu.be/lC3KfbP9tdM.

Sprint Cars and Stock Cars

Sprint Cars are scaled down versions of the winged monsters found on short track dirt ovals such as Western Spring Speedway in Auckland. Full size Stock Cars are used also on dirt ovals such as Waikaraka Park in Onehunga. The RC versions come in a variety of sizes and are powered by a range of motors. Unlike their full size counterparts these vehicles may be run on virtually all smooth surfaces including carpet, tarmac and hard dirt. Tracks for these cars are always oval. Racing is exciting and close providing good keen competition. Losi produces the “Slider” series and are the most popular of these models: http://www.losi.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=LOSB0290.

Dragsters and Drag Racing

Any Formula R vehicle can be used for Drag Racing. All that is needed are a smooth hard surface, two cars, a start line and a finish line! However Formula R has a full lights set including a “Christmas Tree” starting system and a timing system. Specialist drag racing meetings can be held or races can be part of an overall event. In our collection are specialist dragsters that can reach well over 100kph at the end of 40 metres. An excellent web forum on these cars is http://www.rcdrags.com/forum/

Off-Road Classes

The following Formula R vehicles are labelled “Off-Road” however they can be raced on a range of surfaces depending on the class. For example many races are held competitively on indoor carpet circuits complete with jumps. There a wide range of tyres and suspension settings used depending on the track. Their suspension travel is typically long compared to cars designed for smooth surfaces only. One of the most obvious differences between “Off-Road” and “On-Road” vehicles is that the following classes are able to do spectacular jumps. The also have the ability to handle rougher terrain than their smooth surface cousins.

Mini X

These are mostly 4 wheel drive buggies, trucks or “truggies” (Truck body on a buggy chassis) built to 1/14 to 1/18 scale. They can be raced on dirt or indoor tracks and are good for jumps. Whilst most of these are electric powered there are also nitro versions which make for exciting fun on a small scale! In this class are also included the Mini Revo trucks from Traxxas. These are powered by a brushless electric motor with LiPo batteries up to 4 cells (14.4 V) and capable of 80kph! Information at https://traxxas.com/products/models/electric/71074erevovxl116

Off-Road Stock Class

These 1/10 buggies, trucks and truggies run stock brushed electric motors the same as their on-road cousins. These cars can be run indoors or outdoors on a variety of tracks. They have good potential for jumps! A variety of brands are used with Tamiya and Team Associated being our most popular. These are a mix of 4 wheel drive and 2 wheel drive, each having their own characteristics. Some useful driving tips are to be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1KLz-tuVq4

Off-Road Modified Class

This class uses the same type of vehicles as the Stock class but with powerful brushless electric motors and LiPo battery packs. This means they are the thoroughbreds of the off-road family. They can make some spectacular jumps and often come out of corners or take off with their wheels pointed towards the sky! These vehicles are popular for indoor racing on carpet surfaces. They can obtain high speeds of up to 100kph depending on conditions. Footage of a European championship is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMpb_hse1Ss

Short Course (SC) Trucks

These trucks are 1/10 scale lightweight electric and nitro powered racing trucks designed for off-road use on dirt tracks or short grass. They are also raced indoors on a carpet track. Typical of these are the Team Associated electric SC10 rear wheel drive truck and the Traxxas Nitro powered 4wheel drive Slayer. This class features very high tech suspension systems and are a robust vehicle capable of some high speeds. Electric SC Trucks are often raced against modified buggies. An excellent video showing the capabilities of the SC10 electric truck is found here: https://youtu.be/30h-l3dupOA

Monster Trucks

As the name suggests these amazing 1/10 scale trucks are modelled on their famous full size counterparts and have all the same high tech componentry. They feature long travel suspension, very high power to weight ratio and the ability to travel over uneven ground at a high speed. A huge variety of surfaces can be used with these vehicles and good jumps performed! Monster Trucks may be electric or nitro powered with speeds upwards of 100kph possible even on dirt. These exciting vehicles take a lot of skill in handling and are suitable for experienced drivers only. A great video on their capabilities is found here: https://youtu.be/b57b5s_LNmI

Large Scale Vehicles (1/5 & 1/4 scale)

Formula R has a limited number of large scale trucks, buggies and cars for the hard core driver to use. These vehicles are powered by a 2 stroke petrol driven engine of around 25 to 30cc. Although they may look similar to a weed eater engine, they are highly specialised pieces of machinery able to put out 6 to 8 horsepower. Just like some full size race cars, tyre warmers are sometimes used to ensure the rubber is heated enough for good grip. Speeds of over 100kph make these cars spectacular and only for very experienced drivers. Take a look at https://youtu.be/qoWFrUPe4h4.

Other Formula R Vehicles

Formula R has a range of other vehicles for your enjoyment. We are continually looking for new ideas to add to our inventory.

Helicopters

These can be flown indoor in a large hall or outdoors in calm air. Formula R uses “Coaxial” type choppers to make them easier to fly than rear propellor setups. The coaxial setup uses 2 counter rotating main blades to give stability without the need for a rear tail propellor. Helicopters can be tricky to fly even with the coaxial arrangement. We recommend the use of simulator software before venturing out on these machines. A free example of this type of software is found here: http://rcdeskpilot.com/

Drones

The Parrot AR Drone and Drone2 are quite remarkable machines. The offer a FPV (First Person Visual) experience on your smartphone or tablet. Cameras are mounted on the front and underside of the drone with the view available on your device. The software is free to use and found on the Google Play Store or Apple IOS Apps. A simulation mode ensures you have a bit of experience before trying these aircraft.

Motorcycles

Formula R has both on-road and off-road bikes. Our 1/5 scale dirt-bikes have a gyroscope in the rear wheel which makes them relatively stable and the easiest to control. The 1/5 scale electric and nitro on-road bikes on the other hand are difficult to master. All 2 wheel machines are faithful to their full-size cousins in terms of how they turn. When cornering on a motorcycle the handlebars are pushed in the opposite direction from the corner. This is called “counter-steering” and is explained here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Countersteering.
