How many schools?

The IFLA Guide included 283 educational centres in 26 European

countries. However, 63 institutions were removed or merged, for

four reasons:

• Some were professional associations or national libraries

offering short LIS courses addressed to active professionals.

• Some institutions seemed to have dropped their degrees in LIS.

• Some institutions have merged since the publication of the IFLA

guide in 2007.

• When two schools or departments in a single university offered

LIS-related education, only the one closer to the field was

considered for classification purposes.

Humanities

Most European LIS-related educational programmes are

delivered by schools and departments that can be classified

under the heading of “Humanities”.

However, this figure is, to a certain degree, misleading. If we look

more closely at these 70 schools and departments, we observe

that most of them (49) are faculties of Language, Philosophy

and related disciplines based in Italian universities that offer

degrees in cultural heritage (beni culturali).

Higher education in France

Page 29: LIS education in Europe: an overview

– le journalisme (écrit, radio, télé, multimédia);

formation par les médias;

Conservatory and music libraries, general libraries with music sections, church and private archives, request the use of specialized staff capable to catalogue according to national and international standards.

The new School is aimed at creating this special professional figure through the adoption of an innovative study plan enhancing the cataloguing practice, but also providing for the study of subjects that help build a wider range of skills: music philology, music IT, music history, music theory, music palaeography, the history of staff notation, music iconography.

Domestic collaboration

There are few examples of collaboration among universities,

both at the domestic or at the international level:

• Master of Archival Science: Cultural Heritage and Records

(Belgium), Vrije Universiteit Brussel (coordinator), Universiteit

Antwerpen, Universiteit Gent, KU Leuven

• Master in Digital Content Management (Spain), Universitat

de Barcelona (coordinator), Universitat Pompeu Fabra

Digital Library Learning (DILL) is a two-year international

master’s programme for elite information professionals to

provide them with the skills and competencies necessary to

navigate through the rapidly evolving world of digital libraries. It

is offered in cooperation between Tallinn University (Estonia) and

the University of Parma (Italy). Students will spend at least one

semester at each institution

Summer schools

The summer school is a collaboration

between University of Washington (UW)

as part of UW's Study Abroad-program

Page 57: LIS education in Europe: an overview

Conclusions (I)

• There is no common European approach to LIS education with different orientations of training in each country.

• There are very few experiences of international (or even domestic) collaboration for delivering degrees in partnership.

Page 58: LIS education in Europe: an overview

Conclusions (II)

• Most undergraduate degrees in librarianship combine a general culture background with courses in technology, languages and practical training.

• Other undergraduate degrees seem to be more oriented towards business information management.

Page 59: LIS education in Europe: an overview

Conclusions (III)

• There are no clear differences between undergraduate and graduate programmes, which have similar names and lack specific target audiences.

• In addition to postgraduate degrees in librarianship and archive studies, most programmes revolve around digital curation, business information services and data analytics.
