What Is A Liquidator?

A liquidator distributes merchandise that is considered surplus and/or salvage. A liquidator can get merchandise from a variety of sources including retail customer returns, stagnant inventory, last seasons models, overstock, canceled orders and other means.

The Liquidators main audience for this type of merchandise is simply anyone that is searching for wholesale merchandise to resell. Possible clients of a liquidation company can include Ebay sellers, small retail store owners, Flea Market vendors and exporters.

Some Liquidators will purchase this type of merchandise in large quantities and then resell to anyone wishing to buy at below wholesale pricing. Obviously the Liquidator is in business to make money so all merchandise is marked up before it is offered to the end reseller.

Not all Liquidators actually warehouse the merchandise they offer for sale. Hence the term Broker. If Liquidation Company is offering a specific pallet or truckload of merchandise that they do not own this is called brokering. The liquidator would list as many details including pictures if available of the merchandise adding their commission or profit to the sales price. When a reseller purchases the pallet or truckload the liquidation broker simply buys the pallet or truckload at that time and then arranges shipping to the client.

I will stress at this point that there is nothing wrong with a broker who educates his clients and represents the merchandise being brokered in an honest manor. Also a prudent broker will not mark a pallet or truckload up so high that an end reseller cannot make a profit after freight charges. I would like to say all brokers act in an ethical manor adhering to the principles I outlined about, but this is simply not the case.

Due to a few reasons mentioned above about the way a broker might choose to transact business is more than likely the reason you have purchased this guide with the intent to “Bypass” the Broker and get to the direct source for liquidated merchandise. You have made a wise decision.

Two major categories of Closeout Merchandise include:

Customer Returns - Merchandise that has been purchased at retail level and then returned to the original store for various reasons. Some returns are defective, broken or simply returned for no apparent reason at all. A consumer might return merchandise because it was bought in haste or by impulse. In this scenario if the original packaging is not intact or missing a component the retailer will deem it salvage. Defective or broken merchandise is a tricky area; often products can be repaired if you have the skill required. You should expect a percentage of damaged and/or irreparable items when purchasing customer returns. Every pallet and truckload will vary in defects/damages.

Shelf Pull Merchandise - Products that were previously on the shelf in a retail store but were never sold. They may have multiple price tags/stickers on the packaging or they may have been display models showing use and missing parts. Typically considered undamaged, shelf pull merchandise will require a little work in appearance prior to reselling, for example apparel might need to be steamed or pressed before merchandising.

You will need to create a login and password and then fill out yourcompanies information including Name, Address, Email and phonenumbers

Download the terms and conditions for each store you want to purchase from. Signed copies will need to be faxed into Genco at: 425-977-8950 along with a copy of a valid business license and tax certificate

Transmit all information via the secured form you just filled out. Make sure to fax in the signed and dated store terms & conditions. You will also need to fax a copy of your business license and Sales tax permit.

Genco will then review your application and contact you when your application is approved. Once you have been approved you will be able to login to Genco's online dashboard.

Once logged into the online dashboard You will notice there are two ways to purchase pallets and/or loads of merchandise.

You can bid on loads after clicking the Auction tab or Purchase from the "Fixed Price" category

In the auction category you must bid on each pallet or truckload. The highest bid at the auction's close will determine the winner.

Fixed Price simply means you purchase at a predetermined percentage of original vendor cost. Once you decide on either auction or fixed price you will note that you can search for item by category.

Q) Will I need a forklift to unload my pallets?

A) A forklift will make unloading much easier. An actual loading dockwould be the best situation, but most of those reading this probably donot have either. You have a couple of options including arranging with alocal business to receive your shipment for a predetermined fee orhaving your shipment left at the nearest freight terminal. You can thenpick your merchandise up using a large truck and/or trailer on yourschedule.

As Is - When a property is sold as is, the seller does not warrant or guaranteethat the property is free of defects. The buyer accepts the property in its presentcondition, without modification. May or may not be functional and has noassociated warranty

Bill of Lading- A contract between a shipper and carrier listing the terms formoving freight between specified points.

Blind - Refers to a load or pallet that is un-manifested or or has no writteninventory of contained merchandised, nor do they have a manifest

Bulk - Items that are sold in large quantities. When buying in bulk most of thetime you will receive a significant discount. Make sure to inquire.

Case lot - Products packaged and sold by a predetermined quantity from themanufacturer.

Closeouts - Merchandise that is being sold below the original wholesale cost.

Discontinued - This category of product is most commonly found in electronics,automotive parts, and appliances. New models are manufactured with updatedtechnology or features. The old or past models therefore become discontinued.Discontinued products can be purchased for very little cost and will contain littleor no damage.

Drop shipping - A method of selling where the retailer does not stock goods, butinstead takes customer orders and sends them to a wholesaler, who in turn shipsout the orders.

Factory Overruns - A production run that went over the scheduled amount,resulting in excess inventory. Here is a great opportunity to purchasemerchandise at a deep discount. I have personally bought merchandise for nickelson the dollar.

Overstocks - Stock that was left over after a particular selling season.

Federated - Refers to the Federated chain of department stores includingBloomingdale’s, Bon Marche, Burdines, Goldsmiths, Lazarus, Macy’s East, Macy’sWest and Rich’s. When merchandise is described as “Federated” it is from thischain of fine department stores. Generally considered in the industry and at aretail level…Mid to high-end quality.

FOB - “Freight On Board” This refers to the location of the merchandise beingrepresented and shipped from. This can be some indication that the merchandiseis being “Brokered”, obviously if the company you are dealing with is located inTexas and lists merchandise FOB Florida you can almost assume your broker hasnever seen the merchandise offered. Be careful, as this is not the case in allsituations. A company may have multiple warehouse locations. This is a grey areaand very hard to determine. You will notice many companies stating, “We havemany FOB or warehouse points all over the US”. This should not be construed ascompany owned facilities.

Gaylord Box - Corrugated cardboard shipping and storage boxes that aretypically open to approximately 48″ x 48″ 48″ and are used on pallets forshipping large quantities of smaller items

Grey Market Goods - Licensed goods where the origin, authenticity, or methodof distribution is in question. This has become a major problem with apparel andfootwear. Unauthorized factory overruns, back door deals, knock offs, and more.Buying and selling them can result in civil and criminal penalties. It doesn’tmatter if they are authentic or not. If they did not come from an authorizedfactory distributor or a department store which is usually an authorized distributoryou have exposure. Be extremely cautious when purchasing straight brand lotsespecially from small distributors.

HBA - Health & Beauty Aids. Can encompass several types of merchandiseincluding: cosmetics, personal hygiene items and over the counter drugs (OTC)

IMASD - Internet Marketing Association of Surplus Dealers (Surplus.net). Thesite links Surplus and Closeout Companies from around the world. Users cansearch by relevant term to access merchandise currently for sale or wanted. EachIMASD member maintains a web page displaying merchandise available. Referredto as “Hot Sheet”. IMASD is an advertising network.

Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) - Carriers are trucking companies that combinesmaller shipments from multiple companies on the same truck and make multipledeliveries. These goods move through a network of terminals on route to theirfinal destination. At each terminal, the shipment may be taken off one truck andtransferred to another that is loaded with goods destined for the same region. LTL

is used by companies without the volume to move full truckloads.

Lift-gate service - When the shipping or receiving address does not have aloading dock, manual loading or unloading is necessary. A lift gate is a platform atthe back of certain trucks that can raise and lower a shipment from the ground tothe truck. Additional fees apply for this service.

Liquidation Products - Products that were sold at a discount (many times lessthan the production cost) in order to turn slow-moving or stagnant inventory intocash.

Manifest - term used for a written inventory of goods in question. A manifest canlist the following information; Item model numbers, quantity of items, wholesalevalue & retail value of individual items. A manifest usually does not list actualitem conditions. Manifests can be emailed or faxed if they are available…ask whenyou call your dealer.

National Branded Product (N) - Product that is not manufactured orspecifically sold at a single retail store. National brands are products like GE,Whirlpool, Sony, Panasonic, etc.

NWT – Acronym for “New with Tags”. Refers to an item having the originalRetailers price tags

Pallet - Wood or plastic flat transport structure that supports goods in a stablefashion while in transit. A pallet also allows for ease of product movement in awarehouse setting by the use of a forklift or pallet jacks Pallets are sometimesreferred to as a “Skid”. A standard wooden pallet is 40″ by 48″

Pre-pack - Assorted merchandise with pre-determined colors, styles and/orsizes. Typically will refer to apparel.

Private Label (Y) - Product that is manufactured and sold at a single retailorganization. The brand name is identified with a specific organization

Reclamation Centers - Warehouses set up for the purpose of liquidation orwholesale. A company who wants to sell off Surplus inventory or stock will openreclamation centers and wholesale these products to Ebay Sellers, Clearancestores and shops and / or companies that specialize in off-price or wholesale.These centers can be found in many states. Reclamation is a way for a companyto bring additional capital back from stock they no longer have use for or productthat would normally take up valuable space in their warehouse.

Refurbished or Reconditioned Products - Products that have been used (andpossibly previously defective), but have been restored to full working condition.

However, they may or may not come in original packaging or include instructionsand accessories.

Residential Delivery - If you do not have a commercial location that actuallyopens and closes at set times each day within a commercially zoned area, you willbe considered a residence and extra fees will apply for pickup and delivery.

Customer Return - Merchandise that has been purchased at a retail level andthen returned to the original store for various reasons. Some returns aredefective, broken or simply returned for no apparent reason at all. A consumermight return merchandise because it was bought in haste or by impulse. In thisscenario if the original packaging is not intact or missing a component the retailerwill deem it salvaged. Retail - Price set for items sold to the general public. The last mark-up in thecost to bring an item to a particular consumer store. Please note, many items willhave a suggested retail price set by a manufacturer. This price does in no wayconstitute a products’ value as “suggested retail prices” are often overlooked byretailers and priced according to market and/or trends.

Salvage and Surplus - Discounted products that vary in functionality,appearance or both. Typically, salvage products are junk and only good for parts,while surplus products may be new (though rare), used or defective.

Seasonal Product - items such as Christmas or Halloween decorations that areheavily discounted right after the season ends

Skid – Another term for pallet - See definition of a Pallet

Stock Lot - Term used to describe multiples of the same items. Example: a Stocklot of apparel would be one garment in various sizes (Same style). Ask forclarification when inquiring.

Store Codes - Store codes are numbers, one or two digits, that represent actualretail stores. Most companies will refer to merchandise as being from Store Code(fill in the blank) to give you an idea of quality and contents of lot or pallet. Storecodes are not usually posted on websites so you must request a listingbreakdown. There are roughly 12-15 codes you will see all the time, as they arethe most popular. They are standard codes used in the industry, however somecompanies may have their own coding system.

Truckload - A standard 53′ truck will hold 24-26 pallets single stacked. Somepallets can be double stacked thereby allowing twice as much (48-50 Pallets)

Manifest Tutorial

A manifest is simply an inventory listing of items contained in a pallet or truckload. When buying liquidation merchandise ask if your load is manifested. This will give you a good idea of the types of items you will receive. Most of the items listed will probably be abbreviated, but you should be able to get a rough idea. Manifests can show original vendors costs, retail costs, quantities of items and store item codes. Every manifest is different, but once you view a couple you will find that a manifest helps in deciding which loads to buy and how much to mark products up when you go to resell.

While it is best to purchase liquidation direct from the actual source (department stores or reclamation centers) you need to know that some liquidators will purchase closeout inventories from retailers who are “Going out of business” or manufacturers who are “Closing out” a particular line. So, in this circumstance the liquidator who bought that inventory would be considered “The Direct Source”.
