From Your Governor
Greetings Fellow Lions,
The New Year has been busy; club visits, council
meetings, cabinet meetings, and convention
planning.
Internationally, LCI has appointed PID Douglas
Alexander to fill the 1st International VP spot that
had previously been held by the late Judge Haynes
Townsend. PID Douglas is from Brooklyn area. He will be on the ballot for
International President at the Singapore convention. We wish PID Doug-
las all the best.
Our new SST, Mary Pemberton started on January 2nd. We are
excited to have her on board. Her email address is
[email protected]. Welcome aboard SST Mary.
District Convention is right around the corner; March 6th and 7th.
Registration needs to be in by the 15th. I am very excited to welcome PID
Nick Xinopoulos as our guest speaker. There will also be a year in review
power point, sessions on membership and leadership, local entertain-
ment, a silent and live auction, and awards will be handed out.
Each club is asked to donate a $20 item for the silent auction.
Larger items will be in the live auction.
There will also be a hunger drive collection; collecting items to
send to the Veterans Center in Rockford. Items needed include canned
food with pull off tops, paper plates, cups, and napkins, etc.
If you haven’t yet sent a club photo for the year in review power
point, please remember to do so. The photo should be sent to

Oregon Lions
Lion Mary Nelson was the speaker at the Oregon
Lions Meeting on January 9th. She is a member of
the Rockford Noon Lions Club, as well the Leader
Dog Coordinator for District 1D. She and her hus-
band Dennis Nelson have, as of this date, taken
on the task of raising eight puppies and then
sent them on their way to be trained to become
Leader Dogs for the Blind at the Leader Dog
Training Center in Michigan. Their generosity
plays a large part in making it possible to provid-
ing dogs to the visually impaired free of charge.
Oregon Lions Grant Afflerbaugh and Oregon Li-
on’s President Mike Hoff presented the $2000
donation to Leader Dog to Mary and Dennis Nel-
son. The Oregon Lions Club is one of many service groups that along with individuals, corporations, and
foundations, support this guide dog program. Lions Clubs throughout the US provide 35% of their funding
and make it possible for Leader Dog to match over 200 dogs to clients every year. Photo from left to right:

Genoa Lions
The Genoa Lions invited the 12 finalists in the
district Spelling Bee to dinner this Wednesday night
(1/15) at the Masonic Temple in Genoa. Three
students from 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades were success-
ful in their class spelling bees and ready to spell their
way to the regionals to be held at Kishwaukee College
in Malta in February. The winner of this year’s Genoa-
Kingston Spelling Bee was Ava Brooks, a 7th grader at
Genoa-Kingston Middle School and the daughter of
Craig and Angie Brooks. The second place winner was
Jack McCombs, the son of Rocko & Jayme McCombs,
he is an 8th grader at Genoa-Kingston Middle School.
Six of the 12 spellers were eliminated by round 5 and
the winner was crowned in round 17. The alternate/3rd place speller was Brycen Wiegartz (5th grader).
Dinner was hosted by Lion President Dale Pelley and the Genoa Lions Club, which provided the trophies for
the Champion and Runner-up. McDonalds in Genoa donated 12 -$10 “Arch Cards”, one for each contest-
ant. Mr. Paki Uili, the Assistant Principal of the Middle School acted as “pronouncer”. Mrs. Emily Fowler
organized the Spelling Bee and was assisted in judging by Principal Craig Butcher and teacher Mrs. Katie
Schumacher of Genoa Kingston Middle School. School superintendent Brent O’Daniell and John Francis, the
principal of Genoa Elementary, were there to encourage the students.
Here is a list of all the student participants:

District Hunger Drive
As we roll into a new year, it is a good time to reflect on accomplishments in the past year, while we
look forward, setting goals for the coming year. We have much to be thankful for! Over the last couple
months Lions from throughout our District have provided meals, gift bags and/or fruit baskets to Senior Citi-
zens and shut-ins in our communities and clothing and gifts to children to make their Christmas just a little
brighter. One group who may have been overlooked is our veterans, struggling to transition back to civilian
life, find a job, reconnect with their families and become an active valued part of our community again.
One way we can assist these veterans is to contribute to the Veterans’ Drop in Center located at
1539 South 4th Street in Rockford. The Veterans’ Drop-In Center started in 2009 to provide an area where
veterans and their families can gather with peers, without the formalities that often come with other veter-
ans’ organizations. They provide 2 meals per day, one at 12 noon and again at 5pm, feeding approximately
20-30 Veterans at each meal, and that number varies with the weather.
There are a number of items on their current “Wish List” that I am hoping 1D Lions can help them with:
· 55 gallon garbage bags
· Napkins
· Dessert plates and bowls
· Grocery store gift cards
· Bus tokens
· Heavy duty plates
· Foam cups
· Canned foods with Pop-top lids for the Veterans to take home and use for their next meal, especially
in bad weather when it is difficult to get back to the Center for the next meal, and for weekends
when the Center is not open.
These items are needed for making the meals, serving the meals and transportation to come to get their
meal or take them home.
With the District Convention just around the corner I am asking if each club could donate a few items from
the “Wish List” and bring them to the 1D District Convention on March 6 & 7, 2020. Let’s see how many
boxes we can fill and show our Veterans that we are thinking of them and say “Thank You for Your Service.”
Sincerely,
Lion Barb Sager
1D Cabinet Hunger Coordinator

Diabetes Info
Session Wednesday,
February 19
5:30 pm - Refreshments
6:00 pm Presentation
Diabetes can have a profound affect on your vision and hearing. Over time, the
high blood sugar levels associated with diabetes can cause cataracts, diabetic
retinopothy, or blindness. High blood sugar levels can also damage the small
blood vessels in the inner ear, leading to hearing loss.
Who should attend the Diabetes Info Session? Anyone who wants to
understand how diabetes affects your vision and hearing, and how you can
reduce your chances of vision and hearing loss.
To RSVP for this FREE event, please call (815) 332-6834 or visit
