Running your GP-20 with a Lionel transformer

Place your GP-20 locomotive on Lionel or Lionel-compatible O gauge track.• Note the pull of Magne-Traction between your GP-20 and the

steel track. Magnetized wheels and axles increase your pullingpower (more than 25 cars on straight and level track) and keepyour GP-20 on track while passing swiftly through curves.

22 Power up your GP-20 with your transformer.

• Your GP-20 is designed to operate on 7-18 volts alternating cur-rent. Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-compatible alternating-currenttransformers are suitable; we recommend the TrainMasterCommand model railroad control system.

• DO NOT POWER YOUR GP-20 WITH DIRECT CURRENT (DC). Damage tosensitive electronic components may occur.

• When you first power up your track, the GP-20 will waitbetween 3 and 8 seconds as it “listens” for digital language fromthe TrainMaster Command Base (available separately). When it’sdetermined that it’s on a conventional (nonCommand) railroad, the GP-20’s headlights will illuminate and Railsounds will fire up.At this point, the locomotive is in neutral. (This occurs when plac-ing the GP-20 on your railroad for the first time. Thereafter, itstarts in forward after every three-second power interrupt.)

Note!

33 Move ‘em out!

• Get your GP-20 moving. Press the DIR button on your CAB-1remote or Lionel transformer. This sequences the LionelCommand reverse unit (LCRU) to the next operating state. TheLCRU alternates between three states: forward, neutral, andreverse.

• Adjust track voltage until your GP-20 moves at your desiredspeed. To increase speed, increase track voltage. To decreasespeed, reduce voltage. To stop the locomotive, cut track power.

• To select a single operating state (example: forward only), youcan deactivate the LCRU’s sequencing function. Get your GP-20moving in the desired direction, then slide the reverse unit controlswitch on the locomotive’s underside to PROGRAM. See page 12for the switch location and positioning.

Using your GP-20’s Electrocoupler in the non-Command environment

If your GP-20 is equipped withElectrocouplers, then in the non-

Command environment, you must firstcouple a piece of rolling stock equipped

with Lionel magnetic couplers directlyto your GP-20. The magnetic coupler onthe rolling stock will then react to themagnetic field generated by a Lionelremote-control track section (availableseparately). Place your rolling stock’scoupler “trigger disc” over the centralcoil of a remote-control track sectionand press uncouple on the controller. Themagnetic field pulls the disc downward, and the coupler opens.

Your GP-20s Electrocoupler will NOTopen manually or by using a remote-con-trol track section

Magnetic coupler on the rollingstock coupled to your GP-20

Note!

Using your GP-20’s Electrocoupler in the TrainMaster Command environment

If your Lionel GP-20 is equipped withfront and rear Electrocouplers it

responds to the COUPLER F (front)and COUPLER R (rear) button onyour CAB-1 remote when operat-ed in the Trainmaster Commandenvironment. Simply press either

button on your CAB-1 remote, and thatcoupler opens.

Y o u r G P - 2 0 ’ sElectrocoupler is NOTdesigned to be openedmanually.

Note!

Using your GP-20’s magnetic couplers

If your Lionel GP-20 is equipped withmagnetic die-cast knuckle couplers,

they react to themagnetic fieldgenerated by aLionel remote-control tracksection (avail-able separately).

Place your

locomotive’s coupler trigger disc overthe central coil of a remote-control track

section and press“uncouple” onthe controller. Themagnetic fieldpulls the discdownward, andthe knuckleopens.

Position your GP-20's trigger disc over the remote-con-trol track section, then press “uncouple.”The coupleropens.

Your GP-20’s Railsounds system—the basics

L ionel Railsounds is the most realis-tic model railroad sound system in

the world. Your GP-20 features digitalsamples from an authentic GP-20 for the ultimate inrealism.

Begin byinstalling a 9-volt alkalinebattery. Thise n s u r e sinteruption freeoperation ofRai lsounds.Remove thefour cabm o u n t i n gscrews (see theillustration onpage 13 for theirlocation), lift offthe GP-20’sbody. Connectthe 9-volt battery to the battery clip andplace the battery into the holder. Replacethe body and reinsert the four screws.

Although track voltagepowers Railsounds, the battery is required for uninter-rupted operation and shut-down sequences. Use onlyalkaline batteries; do not use“heavy duty” batteries.

Apply track power and the GP-20’sRailsounds system delivers an authenticstart-up sequence, followed by sounds of thelocomotive at idle. As the GP-20’s speed

increases, theRPMs movethrough four lev-els of roar. Soundsreturn to idle onlyafter the locomo-tive has come to acomplete halt. Tosilence dieselRPM roar (hornand bell remainunaffected), slidethe Railsoundsswitch to its SIGNAL positionbefore powering upthe locomotive. Seepage 12 for theswitch location

and positioning. To return to the diesel RPMroar, return the switch to the FULL positionbefore powering up the locomotive.

Discontinue locomotivepower for 10 seconds beforechanging the Railsoundson/off switch.

If Railsounds “drops out”during track power inter-rupts, replace the battery.

Install a 9-volt alkaline battery in your GP-20. Remove thefour mounting crews, lift off the body, connect the batteryto the power cord, and place the battery into the holder.

A note on Magne-Traction

Your GP-20 is equipped withLionel Magne-Traction, magne-

tized wheelsets and axles that helpincrease tractive effort during opera-tion. Because the wheelsets are mag-netized, take care to prevent small

metallic objects from attaching to thewheel sets and working their wayinto the GP-20’s motor assembly. They can damage your locomotive.

Magne-Traction is not effectiveon nonferrous track.

Transformer operations

W ith Railsounds, you experiencethe sounds of real railroading

like never before. Simply put, it’s themost sophisticated, authentic modelrailroad sound system in the world.

• Four diesel-roar levels. Your GP-20’sspeed determines the level of diesel RPMroar—automatically, if you prefer: idle, slow, medium, or full-speed output.• MultiHornTM. A different horn soundevery time—a Railsounds exclusive.• Mechanical bell. Press BELL on yourCAB-1 or transformer to begin theeffect; again to discontinue.• Full control of RPMs. Prefer hands-oncontrol of diesel RPM roar? Want to“ramp up” RPMs before pulling out, justlike real diesels do? It’s easy withRailsounds. Place your GP-20 in neutraland increase track voltage to maximum.RPMs will continue to increase as longas the GP-20 remains in neutral, eventu-ally reaching their highest level. Now,

within 3 seconds, decrease track voltageto the desired speed level, press DIR onyour CAB-1 remote or transformer, andhead out with your GP-20 at full churn, just like the real thing. RPMs will remainat that level until the locomotive has come toa complete halt. Experiment with control-lable RPMs—it’s a blast!• Reverse unit reset sound. Powerdown your track, wait for 3.5 seconds, and listen for the air-release sound—that’s the GP-20 telling you its LionelCommand reverse unit has just reset toforward operation. • Shutdown sequence. No othermodel railroad sound system shutsdown like Railsounds. Turn off trackpower, and after the air-release resetsound, you have 2 seconds to restartyour GP-20. If you’re done with opera-tions, Railsounds will commence withan authentic GP-20 shutdownsequence about 2 seconds after the air-release reset occurs.

Experiencing the range of your GP-20’s Railsounds system

Notes on Railsounds

• Use the volume control knob on theunderside of the GP-20 to adjust soundoutput. (See page 13 for its location.)• Listen for incidental locomotivesounds during Railsounds operation. They’re automatic and, of course, authentic.• The 9-volt alkaline battery youinstalled ensures continuous GP-20

diesel roar, even during short track-power interrupts.• Longer track-power interruptions(including locomotive derailments)cause Railsounds to shut down afterabout 7 seconds.• For even more authentic Railsoundseffects, operate in the TrainMasterCommand environment.

The Command control environment

Lionel TrainMaster Command is theadvanced model railroad control

system from Lionel. Your GP-20 isequipped with the Lionel Commandreverse unit and features digitalRailsounds control.

TrainMaster Command gives you the

power to operate multiple Command-equipped locomotives on the same track,at the same time.

TO OPERATE IN COMMAND, YOU NEED

A COMMAND BASE AND A CAB-1REMOTE. Find them both at your autho-rized Lionel retailer.

88

TrainMaster Command operations

Place your GP-20 locomotive on Lionel or Lionel-compatible O gauge track.• Make sure track power is OFF before placing your GP-20 on the

track.• Make sure your Lionel Command Base is ON and its communi-

cations wire is connected to the COMMON post on your Lioneltransformer or the U post on any of your installed PowerMasters.

• Once positioned on the track, increase track voltage to FULL (onPowerMaster, slide the CMD/CONV switch to CMD).

22 Address your GP-20 locomotive using CAB-1.

• Press ENG and 1 on the numeric keypad of your CAB-1 remote. This command is sent by CAB-1 to the Command Base, whichthen translates your command into digital code. That code is sentaround your railroad’s outside rails in the form of a digital “halo.”All Command-equipped Lionels listen to this digital communica-tion, but they do not respond until they hear their individual IDnumber—in this case, “1.”

• The digital language of TrainMaster Command—and not trackpower—controls the actions of Command-equipped Lionels.Track power is simply like gasoline in the tank of your car—itgives you the power to go places, but it doesn’t tell you where togo or how fast to get there.

• All Command-equipped Lionels come factory-programmed withan ID# of “1.” To change the ID# of your GP-20, see page 12.

33 Move ‘em out!

• Throttle up or press any command button on CAB-1. Your GP-20locomotive will respond to your every command. Read on.
