Middle Skills Needed(Technical Skills)

…employment opportunities within the next ten years will include “middle skills occupations suited for those candidates with associates degrees” rather than bachelor’s degrees. These “middle skills” jobs will make up half of all new jobs in the next decade.

Harvard Graduate School of Education’s report “Pathways to Prosperity”

Page 6: Linking Education with Employment Outcomes (LEEO) in a NAF Academy

Consider the Problem…..

• How would you define “Middle Skills Occupations” ?

• What can your district do to address this need?• What financial impact on your district does this

present?• What professional development needs of

instructors are identified?• What monitoring steps are needed to ensure

quality instruction?

Page 7: Linking Education with Employment Outcomes (LEEO) in a NAF Academy

Why the Need?

• In general, students are graduating with the technical skills needed for college and career success.

• However, they are lacking soft skills such as:– Working collaboratively in teams– Understanding how to work with unique

personalities, upper management and with VIP’s such as elected officials.

Page 8: Linking Education with Employment Outcomes (LEEO) in a NAF Academy

What are the Goals?

• Increase technical skills as a result of student achieving multiple Industry Certifications

• Increase workplace readiness skills as a result of students working with business and industry partners throughout their school tenure

• Real world experiences as a result if project based learning in the classroom, with business mentors
