At the previous newsletter I was refer-ring to the job description of the youth
worker. But how someone can become a youth worker?
Some countries, especially in the north of Europe and the Baltics, are offering uni-versity degree but the most countries of the EU, they are offering some courses within other studies (f.e. social workers) or they don’t have any official training. In this case, if they are involved in youth as-sociations, clubs or NGOs, they can par-ticipate in training courses (in-service or not) and develop the skills and compe-tences they need for their daily work with youth.
Some of the examples are the three cours-es we participated or organised in the Mes-sinia region. The first one, was a seminar organised by the Municipality of West-ern Mani called “YOUth UP!” in Septem-ber 2012. The participants, coming from 7 countries, had the opportunity to be trained on the ways you can create a youth structure (youth centres, youth festivals, youth information offices etc) as well as to develop on the spot some study cases about projects they would like to have in their local communities.
The second one, organised by KANE in November 2012, was a training course for youth workers, youth leaders and facilita-tors, with the aim to train the participants on how to create educational tools for non formal education sessions. 24 participants
from 8 countries, had the opportunity to learn, share experiences and create new methodologies for training sessions for youth. Some of you might observed some of the results in the Youth Centre as for many days they were on the walls of the dance room.
The third one, just finished the previous week, was aiming to train the participants in how to manage projects for including youth and adults, in the lifelong learning education. 20 participants from 13 differ-ent countries of Europe, came together for 8 days and developed new skills in project management and identifying the opportu-nities they can offer to their local commu-nities.

Returning to our daily life... check in the next pages about the new workshops of the youth centre as well as other activities. We would also like to ask you for ideas you might have, for special activities we will do in March for celebrating the 4 years of the Youth Centre of Kalamata!!!!

ter: Portuguese language classes, Cho-rus / Solfege workshop, Painting and Theater workshops.

* CHAIrSStrange as it may sound, the Youth Center is in need of chairs! As everything gets older by using it a lot, the chairs in the Youth Center keep breaking down once in a while and our dear volunteers have to move chairs from 1st floor to 2nd & vice versa all day long, in order to accomodate the different workshops. The workshops need chairs for the participants to sit & we don’t have enough to make the volunteer’s life easyer.
* BICYCLESDo You happen to have a bike that You don’t use it anymore or is standing in a base-ment etc. and You don’t need it, then don’t let it get rusty without use & please bring it to Youth Centre - we have many volunteers who would kindly appreciate it! (Seriously, think about it and let us know, it doesn’t have to be perfect, just bike that is possible to bike with!!!)
* MEDICINEWe support the Social Solidarity Clinic of Kalamata and we invite the members of the Youth Centre to bring from Monday to Thursday between 17:00 and 22:00 any medi-cine that they do not need anymore.You can also deliver them directly to the Social Solidarity Clinic of Kalamata if it is more convenient for you, which is located near the old hospital of the city of Kalamata.
* TOYSFinally, we gather here at the Youth Center old toys for children, as they need toys at the Center of Therapeutic Horse riding of Kalamata.

The Ιαετριο Αλληλεγγύης Καλαμάτας (Solidarity Hos-
pital of Kalamata) is a Hospi-tal which started to work a few years ago here in Kalamata and it is completely run out by vol-unteers (doctors, secretary and other staff). It is located inside the area of the Old Hospital of Kalamata and its main objective is to help all the people who, af-fected by the crisis or not, don’t have any kind of health insur-ance.
On one Thursday morning we had arranged a meeting with one of the volunteer staff of
the Solidarity Hospital of Kalamata. The Youth Center of Kalamata got in touch with this proj-ect in order to know more about them and how it is working, in order to promote their actions and to make a global call for help and collabo-ration.
The Ιαετριο Αλληλεγγύης Καλαμάτας (Sol-idarity Hospital of Kalamata) offers medical assistance inside their Pathology Section, De-partment of Pediatrics, Faculty Imaging (ultra-sound) and also they have a Pharmacy Depart-ment that stores medicines and health products resulting from public donations.
As it is all run out by volunteer and donations, the clinic is in need of medications but main-ly in human staff can help secretariat. They have created patient records information sys-tem-drug-volunteers and the main issue is to ask people who have knowledge or just have a certain familiarization with computers to help in computering all the medical details. The Hospital is open a wide time of hours and the

existing staff makes superhuman efforts to keep the secretariat, while they also need people for a variety of other activities operations arising from the operation of the Clinic.If you want to collaborate or you know some-one who could be interested in getting involved in this project doing a few volunteering hours a week, please contact at 27210-89840 (9.00-13.00 hours from Monday to Friday). Furthermore, in their web page, each person can find the online application to volunteer and complete contact information. The staff of the Hospital will con-tact you later in order to discuss how and who can help the clinic.
Also, if you have at home medicaments that you don’t use any more, you can offer them as a do-nation to the Hospital Center of Kalamata. Fur-thermore, the Youth Center of Kalamata will soon dispose information of a collecting day of medicaments in order to have an ultimate goal in the Hospital.With our small help we can contribute to a bet-ter world and to ensure the health of many peo-ple.

In wonderful Messinian Bay Hotel from 19th to 27th of
January 2013 Grundtvig work-shop about lifelonglearning programs (LLP) took part. Goals of it were to give participants knowledge about LLP and also teach them to use gained knowl-edge in practice after going back to their home countries.

Grundtvig Workshop ‘Lifelong Learning; The Multiplier Experience’
People from 13 different countries came together to learn about LLP and get international contacts for future. We hosted people from Fin-land, Estonia, Latvia, Spain, Por-tugal, UK, Turkey, Belgium, Italy, romania, Poland, Czech republic and Scotland.
During workshop they learnt about LLP and other topics associated with general theme. Participants created different projects concern-ing environment, different parts of society, generation problems and so on. Many of them were even so good that we might see them become real, if participants will continue to have motivation and will-power to realise them after the end of the workshop.
There was also time to see Kala-mata and it’s cultural heritage, visit Youth Centre of Kalamata and Sec-
ond Chance School & much more.
Also cultural night was arranged with different tasty food, interest-ing music and engaging dances from participative countries.
After tiering but full-of-action week all the participants received certificate as a prove of participat-ing in this workshop. Feedback was mainly very positive and it also shows that this kind of events are needed for making Europe more united.
It was pleasure to see how united and minded all the participants grow during seminar. On behalf of KANE, Social Youth Develop-ment NGO we want to thank you all. Also kind thanks to locals and of course organizers for great work regarding workshop.

What happens in Κεντρο Ημερας?
The thing that struck me more during
my first days as a volunteer there, was
particularly one of the inner aspects of
the center: images everywhere. The ma-
jority of the children with autism com-
ing there (in total around 20) do not
speak, but use more the other senses in
order to interact with the world. And
the sight is one of them (maybe the most
important one); they memorize the im-
ages and use them instead of words in
order to communicate. In fact, there are
Kentro Ημερας is a place for autistic children (from
5 to 17) and is situated in the periphery of Kalamata, not so far from Ναβαρινου οδος. Here, a team composed by girls with different specializations (psy-chology, speech therapy, gym-nastic etc.) help the children to develop their social and physical skills, proposing them different activities and games.

do or where they have to go, and the
same make the staff with them.
But not only that. In Kentro Ημερας
take place a lot of other interesting
stuff. Apart from the moments in
which alone, in couples, or in groups
they make the activities programmed
for them in each class, the children can
play together on the courtyard, draw,
dance, sing songs and cook - especial-
ly really good cakes and biscuits - all
under the supervision and help of the
staff. And this is an other interesting
thing that has modified my idea about
autism as condition of dependency: I
think that in that place they are mak-
ing a really good job (but I’m sure that
for them is not only a job, because you
can see that they love what they are
doing. And you can find the proof of
it every time that a child does some-
thing funny or makes some improve-
ment, because the single person that is
following him or her go to tell imme-
diately to the others with happiness).
The children here are really improv-
ing, and the girls tell me with satis-
faction how much they have changed
since the first time they came. And so,
little by little, I have also understood
that all of them have their different
personalities, things that they like to
do and others that they don’t like, as
well as preferences between the mem-
bers of the stuff.
What happens in Κεντρο Ημερας? (2)
My role there is to help where-as is needed. I usually accompany the girls and the children during their excursions outside, when we have a walk along Ναβαρινου οδος, or when with the older ones we take the bus and we have a walk in the center of the city (and some of them like a lot to take the bus just outside Κεντρο Ημερας). I play with them during the day, I learned how to prepare κουλουρακια, and, since they have discovered that I draw good, I’m drawing in order to create im-ages and papers that after the girls will use with the children!
Of course, I’m not the only volunteer there. There are in fact also many young greek volunteers (most of them students) that come to help freely and regularly, making pretty the same activities as me. Other than that, the parents of the children are a great contribution for the center as well: for example, before and during the Christmas holi-days, they helped us to prepare the handcrafts that afterwards were sold during the Christmas Bazaar in the central square of Kalamata in order to raise some money for the center. An other aid comes
from the various persons that have decided in this months to come there to teach to the children something that they do well : a cooker, some mu-sicians, a painter and others.
Last but not least, I would like to point out some more interesting and important points. First, this place is free, which means that the families don’t have to pay to send their children here, because is funded by the state. And I think is good especially in this moment of crisis, because in Athens - the girls told me - there are places in which you have to pay really a lot and not everybody can afford it. Secondly, about the general awareness of the pop-

explained in a simple way to the children of the elementary schools.
In conclusion, they are doing for sure a great job for the families and the children and I can only wish to continue. They are on the right way!
Important to note, as I have comprised, the au-tism is not present in the same form in everybody: is better to consider it as a spectrum in which to place the different children.

yourself ?My name is Loic, I am French and I am 27. I like the cine-ma, the music, the animals, and the origami and sleep on the beach during the warm evening of summer.
Why did you choose this project in the Youth Center and why in Greece ?I choose the project in the youth center, for dis-cover another countrie and the social and cultur-al domain in Greece. It s very interesant for me, I studied in France on university, for became a youth worker, and I am volunteer in different ngo since 7 years. I am volounteer on one youth center in France and when I come back I want to work in this kind of organization. I can see now the differ-ence between the France and the Greece. For me the EVS experience is amazing, it’s a pro-fessional, human and life experience.
Do you feel that this experience make you change your mind or your personality?EVS is a wonderful experience but I think. Nothing

How do you feel now with your new hair style? But very strange things happened, I start to want to smoke Pipe and wear glasses but I don t need glasses. Now I listen electro minimal, and I think tomorrow I will make me a mustache. My name is Ilias Krompas, I am from Kalamata
and I am 27 years old. I have studied philosophy,
pedagogy and psychology with a direction in ped-
agogics at the University of Ioannina and I have
also taken contemporary dance classes for five
years as a hobby.
How did you know/discover K.A.NE Kentro
Neon?
I discovered the Youth Center of Kalamata in 2009,
when I finished my studies and I came back in Ka-
lamata.
Since when are you a volunteer in K.A.NE
Kentro Neon? In which point are you in-
volved in the activities of the Youth Cen-
ter?
I am a volunteer at the Youth Center since Octo-
ber and I participate in the workshop
of creative occupation for children, in which we
organize different types of activities for children
in and out of the center. Additionally, Alexan-
dra Mantzari and me are facilitating together the
workshop of contemporary dance in which we in-
troduce contemporary dance techniques for the
members of the youth center.

I would really like to change the fact that, due to
limited space capacity we cannot cover all the de-
mand of the people in all the workshops. I totally
agree with the fact that everything that we do is vol-
untary service, and we try to solve even the most
practical issues without the financial exchange.

During my holidays, I had the great idea to visit France, this reaaally nice country. I was so excited to discover the country of red wine, culture, “croissants”, fashion and bread “baguette”.As soon as I arrived, I went to see the Eiffel Tower and took a picture far from it, just with my finger up, like if I was touching the top of the tower, so exotic experience!!!
This is the beginning of Teddybear’s travel-article series!
I remember, when I was walking in the streets and in the sub-way, many people shouted at me some words that sounded re-ally elegant such as « κoναρ”, “ βατφερ φουτ” or “ φις ντεταρας” but it was impossible to find them in the dictionary. Sometimes, I could also hear something like “βελος” or more “βολος”, and even now, I’m wondering how those people could know my Greek origins (maybe I should shave my beard...).
Therefore, I went to visit Doulouchsse , the city of my friend Manuela, but first I had to wait for 3 hours because of a public service strike. I met French people in the train sta-tion called “Montparnasse Bienvenue”, which is such a cute name. They were really nice: the woman was wearing a white shirt with blue stripes, she was also wearing black leather gloves, and was smoking long and slim cigarettes. Her husband
had a black cap with a red scarf around his neck, he wasn’t really talkative. Anyway, I talked with the woman about Gérard Depardieu, Edith Piaf, Jean-Paul Gautier and Claude Monnet. It was a cultural exchange really instructive for me...

Anyway, I had the awesome idea to visit Par-is by the river “La Seine”. Then, I found some strange boats completely flat, full of Japanese people taking pictures. I learnt that these boats were called “bateaux mouche”, what could be-come in English “fly boat”. Except if this French expression was a bit weird, it was so interest-ing that I decided that I had seen enough from the French capital.
So, I moved towards the train station SNCF (you know this very luxurious transport brand) and along the « Σαν ντε Μαρς » I saw a pro-cession where many same-sex couples kissed each other in a shocking manner I'll never for-get. Then, another huge group of old women wearing tasteless clothes appeared and pointed fingers at those young people. Well, there were terror screams and some old-fashioned wom-en passed out. I thought about a french ritual which cannot be found even in the Guide du routard or Lonely Planet.
Therefore, I went to visit Doulouchsse , the city of my friend Manuela, but first I had to wait for 3 hours because of a public service strike. Well, as I was a bit broke these days because of the Parisian nightlife, I couldn’t afford a train ticket. Unfortunately, during the trip an inspector noticed my scared face and my trembling hands, I didn’t really under-stand what he said, I only got «βολος” one more time and I got a fine (contravention as they say).
After that painful episode in my life, I finally arrive in Doulouchsse at 22 p.m af-ter endless hours in the train, such a nice city!! Well, we have been welcomed by prostitutes all around the train station. But I decided not to pay too much atten-tion to that. Walking in the city by night, I met a lot of people drinking red wine in the streets, talking all together with a really weird accent, and hugging every-body. Then, I went to see “La Garonne”, the famous river, where I met scaring lost dogs. So you will understand that I decided to leave quickly the area! Then, by running, I arrived on the main square of the city called “Le Capitole”, I saw on the floor 12 iron circles that represent the 12 zodiacal signs. I had the great idea to take a picture of myself stand on the “Leo” iron circle, since I am born in
July. At this moment, I gave a glance at the center town all around me, and I was completely astonished: all these small streets, with pavements on the floor, pink bricks on the wall, these millions of small lights, these people walking everywhere as if it was mid-day, and I couldn’t avoid shouting “Ô Toulouuuuse”. Suddenly, all the people around me started to sing after me, and to dance all together.
…. And back to Kalamata, my native land, I checked in the letter box and I found the best souvenir ever in my life : my first french contravention !

After that painful episode in my life, I finally arrive in Doulouchsse at 22 p.m af-ter endless hours in the train, such a nice city!! Well, we have been welcomed by prostitutes all around the train station. But I decided not to pay too much atten-tion to that. Walking in the city by night, I met a lot of people drinking red wine in the streets, talking all together with a really weird accent, and hugging every-body. Then, I went to see “La Garonne”, the famous river, where I met scaring lost dogs. So you will understand that I decided to leave quickly the area! Then, by running, I arrived on the main square of the city called “Le Capitole”, I saw on the floor 12 iron circles that represent the 12 zodiacal signs. I had the great idea to take a picture of myself stand on the “Leo” iron circle, since I am born in
July. At this moment, I gave a glance at the center town all around me, and I was completely astonished: all these small streets, with pavements on the floor, pink bricks on the wall, these millions of small lights, these people walking everywhere as if it was mid-day, and I couldn’t avoid shouting “Ô Toulouuuuse”. Suddenly, all the people around me started to sing after me, and to dance all together.

My name is Irene, I am 27 years old and I am coming from Spain. I studied Classical Philology and one of my dreams was to come to Greece, so here I am! I work at the Youth Center of Kalamata, I am Spanish teacher and I also help with the general organization of the Youth Center and its activi-ties and events. My project start-ed in September 2012 and I will be here until September 2013!
