Hymn-Story Program. Tonight we are
reviewing the music for a special hymn
service on the life of John Newton. This
special service of worship will be pre-
sented September 25 during the morning
service. It is a dramatic hymn-story pro-
gram that will include a narrator and 2
characters portraying John Newton and
Polly Catlet, the young lady who be-
comes John’s bride.
Tonight marks the beginning of re-
hearsals for the hymn-story program to
celebrate Church Music Emphasis Sun-
day on September 25.
Help with publicity. Please help me
publicize the hymn-story program. You
can log onto the church website:
www.fbcpinebluff.org and download the
poster from the “Music Ministry” page.
The Adult Handbell Ministry is need
of some more ringers. If you have always
wanted to ring bells, this would be a
great time to join us. We meet every
Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the Bell
Room. Our first rehearsal is August 22.
Christmas Music 2011. Final planning
for the Christmas music is coming to a
close and I am very excited about what is
developing. I will be sending out a letter
soon, to those who have sung in our
Christmas presentations in the past.
Please be in prayer as to whom who
might like to invite and share with them
what a great opportunity it will be to
come and check us out! I will have more
information for you next week!
Prayer Partners. Prayer Partners are
needed for the 2011-2012 Children’s
Choir Ministry. Just like last year, we
will pair up a child with an adult in the
Music Ministry to pray for the child dur-
ing this choir year. This would be a
“secret” to the children. Please see Erin
if you would like to participate.
This special ministry within a ministry
will start September 4, 2011.
New Bibles in Choir Loft. I noticed
many of you using the new Bibles last
Sunday. They have been provided for
your use and need to stay in the choir
loft. Please say a word of thanks to the
anonymous donor for their contribution.
You using these Bibles will enhance and
elevate the importance of God’s Word in
our worship service.
We were created to CONNECT,
SERVE, and SHARE! STILL TENTATIVE

Question: Where does the asphalt go
from a pothole?
Scripture: Isaiah 35:8-10
* * * *
L et’s talk road maintenance. We’ve
all seen those rubber reflectors that
are embedded in the road. They invented
in 1934 to help drivers stay on course at
night, and they’re referred to as “cat’s
eyes.” Inside the rubber casing is yellow-
colored glass that attracts the light com-
ing from a car’s headlights. Cat’s eyes
are basically maintenance-free for two
reasons. First, the rubber case is used to
protect the glass from cracking when a
tire rolls over it. Second, the cat’s eyes
are designed to be “self-cleaning.” The
pressure of a tire pushes the rubber case
against the glass eye, and the rubber
moves across the glass, wiping it clean.
Potholes, however, another story. They
can’t take care of themselves. They’re
cause mainly be moisture that is ab-
sorbed by the concrete: add to that the
freeze-thaw cycle, traffic wear, and
chemicals, and soon the pavement crum-
bles from within. It’s easy to figure out
how potholes are filled up, but how are
potholes emptied out? Where does all the
asphalt go that used to be in the pot-
holes? It’s a combination of conditions
that removes the broken asphalt. Vehicle
tires scatter it, rain carries it away, and
wind pushes it onto the road shoulders.
And what about those manholes? Why
are the covers round, instead of square or
oblong? No matter which way it’s
turned, the round manhole cover can’t
fall through the hole; it’s kept in place by
a lip rimming the inside of the hole.
So What? As you travel daily on patched and pot-
holed roads, keep this glimpse of the
road to heaven in your head:
“A main road will go though that once
deserted land. It will be named the High-
way of Holiness. Evil-hearted people will
never travel on it. It will be only for
those who walk in God’s way; fools will
never walk there. Lions will not lurk
along its course, and there will be no
other dangers. Only the redeemed will
follow it. Those who have been ransomed
by the Lord will return to Jerusalem,
singing songs of everlasting joy. Sorrow
and mourning will disappear, and they
will be overcome with joy and gladness.”
—Isaiah 35:8-10, NLT
Keep Jesus as your destination, and
you’ll travel on with confidence!
