The Song of the Savior

Here in a nutshell is the entire glorious mystery of the New Testament. By virtue of his

resurrection, Jesus is alive in such a way that he can be both “with us” and “for us.”

Simultaneously he is “in the midst of the assembly” and in the heavenly Jerusalem ever

interceding for us. A permanent Singer has been installed. From one perspective, he

sings with us in church; from another he intercedes for us in heaven.

When the church gathers in worship, earth and heaven converge. When we sing we are

not singing by ourselves. There is a higher song going on above ours and a deeper song

going on beneath ours.

—Reggie Kidd, from With One Voice: Discovering Christ’s Song in Our Worship, pg. 115.

Lamentations 3:40

Hymn Title: Come, Thou Almighty King

Hymn Tune: ITALIAN HYMN

Words: Anonymous

Music: Felixe de Giardini, 1716-1796

* * * * *

T his hymn text, sometimes credited

to Charles Wesley, appeared

anonymously in a song pamphlet in Lon-

don about 1757 to commemorate Trinity

Sunday in the liturgical church calendar.

It is written to the same tune as the Brit-

ish national anthem of the time, “God

Save Our Gracious King.” Many histori-

ans believe that Wesley wrote the new

hymn text in order to remind congrega-

tions of the true King. The story is told

that during the time of the American

Revolutionary War, a group of British

troops invaded a colonial church on Sun-

day morning during worship and de-

manded that the congregation sing the

British national anthem. The brave colo-

nists stood and sang the tune, but with

this text—a profession of their allegiance

and claim to their religious freedom.

Each verse of this text addresses a sover-

eign aspect of the triune Godhead; God as

Almighty ruler; Christ as the Word wield-

ing a mighty sword, and the Spirit of

power.

As you plan to lead this hymn:

Remember that Jesus taught us to

“render to Caesar the things that are

Caesar’s, and to God the things that

are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21) It is our

responsibility to give God His right-

ful highest honor as ruler.

Consider the text of this hymn, which

invites God to “come and reign over

us.” Examine your heart. Do you

truly mean to be this obedient to

God? Confess those areas of your life

over which God does not reign. Pray

that this particular phrase will be

made personal to the congregation

during worship.

Promises from God’s Word

God’s Promise from Revelation 3:20 (NLT)

“Look! Here I stand at the door and knock. If you hear me calling and open

the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal as friends.”

What Does This Mean For Me?

Jesus made this promise to you because he wants to be your best friend! He

waits each day for you to pray and talk to him—so why not pray to him right

now?
