Learning line types with Comic books

Lichtenstein was born on October 27, 1923 and died on September 29, 1997 (aged 73) in Manhattan, New York.

Lichtenstein first became interested in art as a hobby, not a career.

Before he became famous he was a teacher.

Lichtenstein is best known for his large comic book style paintings.

His work belongs to the Pop Art Movement

Pop art is an art movement that began in the 1950s in Britain and spread to the USA.

Pop art involved the interest of artists in images from popular culture.

Lichtenstein redrew comic book images larger and painted them using bold contour lines and halftone patterns that are used in comic books.

A pattern of dots, varying either in size or in spacing to create value.

In addition to paintings, he also made sculptures in metal and plastic including some notable public sculptures

His painting Torpedo...Los! sold at Christie’s(the auction house) for $5.5 million in 1989, a record sum at the time, making him one of only three living artists to have attracted such huge sums.

What will we be doing?

TYPES OF LINE: LINE DIRECTIONS:

First you will create viewfinders to pick a panel from a comic book page that you want to enlarge.

Fold paper in half and cut a small rectangle

Place your viewfinder over your comic page to block out everything but your image

Now you’re ready to draw!

You will draw your chosen image larger than it is in the comic.

When you have finished in pencil you will trace your lines in sharpie.

When all your lines are traced erase your pencil marks.

Using thin line markers you will add color to your picture.

You will color by using the different types of line.

Use the halftone style-place lines close together for dark and further apart to show light.
