CHAIRPERSON’S

MESSAGE

I would like to thank all those who made the journey to Ottawa for The SCWTAC National Specialty. It is always great to visit with those we haven’t seen for a while as well as meet exhibitors we haven’t met be-fore. We owe a great thanks to “The Specialty Team” in Eastern Ontario for all their hard work: Peggy Warren was instrumental in looking after the hotel and banquet arrangements. Jolijne Ubbink, with all her talent, looked after the prizes, much of the loot in your Loot Bags and those lovely centerpieces you bid on at the Silent Auction as well as The Raffle Prize. Wendy Murray made and designed The Crate Mats and Name Tags as well as looking after The Money. She is also working with Sydney and Alyssa Robinson to create The Specialty Report. Sandy Forbes sold the Raffle Tickets and I must add was “Johnny On The Spot” when I asked both she and Jacquie Holowka to look after the prizes and ribbons at ringside. Margaret Tims was responsible for the Silent Auction and picked up much of my slack for me. . Ron Holowka was back with his camera for some great pictures, many of which will soon appear on the SCWTAC website as well as on www.mywheatens.ca Rob Julien, a dog owner himself was with us this year to take some lovely shots of the Specialty.

Valli Horner and Louis Robayo, as new Wheaten Owners and new

members of our club, offered to help with the Specialty and contributed

greatly to its success.

THE JUDGES—BREED

Joe Lobb Brucefield, Ontario

I began in Dogs in 1974, with the acquisition of my first Dober-man. With my wife Janet, we bred our first litter in 1977 under the ‘Dobenhaus’ prefix and in 1988, we added the Smooth Fox Terri-ers which we continue to breed and exhibit on a limited basis un-der the “FauxPaw” prefix. We handled professionally for a limited number of clients, and were provided with a continuing number of exceptional dogs for many years, some of which achieved top rankings in their re-spective breeds and groups. Of particular note, our long time Wheaten client Fran Talbot (Ballymena) provided us with many great winners. As well as Dobermans and Smooth Fox we have also owned and exhibited other breeds that have added to our many successes…German Shepherds, Bernese Mountain Dog, Bouvier, Grey-hound and Black & Tan Coonhounds. I am licensed for All breeds in Canada and have also judged in USA, Australia, China, Mexico, Sweden, Japan and Colombia. I was also honoured to have officiated at Canada’s ‘Show of Shows’. I’ve enjoyed judging ‘rare breed’ events over the years, exposing me to many other well known breeds from all parts of the world. In my other life, I am a sales/contract manager for the Canadian

operation of a major tractor company.

THE JUDGES—SWEEPSTAKES

Laurie McDonald Campbell

I have been in the sport of show dogs since I was born. My mother was a professional handler (and now a judge) before me as well as a breeder of Miniature Poodles. My first dog was a Brussels Griffon and she began a 38 year love of this wonderful breed. I have now chosen the amazing Standard Poodle to devote my passion and lifelong experience too. I was a professional handler and am proud to say that I only showed dogs that I believe are worthy of the title champion. I have worked and studied with several great handlers through the years and continue to seek out the people in the dog world that I admire and respect for their advice wisdom and grooming expertise. I've done pet grooming for over 30 years. I am now beginning a career as a dog show judge and am ex-cited to start this new step in furthering my life in the sport I love!!!

THE BEGINNING OF THE WEEKEND

The weekend kicked off with a Wine and Cheese Reception hosted by Lana Campbell and Jack Slack. The event was held at Priscilla Tims’ house and it was a great opportunity to put names to faces and enjoy conversation and discussion about the upcoming events.

The EOSCWTC thanks Lana and Jack for being such gracious hosts and providing some delicious choices of wine and cheese.

To end the evening, we had the Annual General Meeting of the

SCWTAC.

JUDGE’S CRITIQUE

I would first like to thank the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier Asso-ciation of Canada for allowing me to judge your National, it is an honour. Like so many shows today the numbers weren't large, but the overall quality was well above average. It appears breeders have addressed the short comings in the breed from years gone by. Today I saw correct size, beautiful eye colour, properly made heads and ears and a big improvement in front and rear angula-tion. There was the usual variety of coats, and for the most part were quite acceptable. Condition, grooming and presentation was wHere you would want it to be. In general, movement, both coming and going and side gait was very pleasing to the eye. You all should be very proud. Now to the winners..........

Winners Dog # 283. He came from the Jun-ior Puppy Dog Class. At seven months he already shows a good deal of promise. He has a great profile both standing and on the move, properly angulated on both ends with a level back and proper tail set. His movement and bold outgoing temperament won him the winners award today.

. Reserve Winners Dog #293. from the Open Dog Class, a very good dog, just coming up on two years of age. He was very well shown in a good coat and his condition was excellent. Very clean on his down and back. I would like a bit more reach in front on the go around. It was a close contest.

19

Winners Female, Best of Winners #285.From the Open bitch Class. At two and a a half years, She stood out! a profile that just caught and held my eye. Beauti-ful head and ears on set on a lovely neck, proper angles all the way around. short level back and bang on tail set. She really was

a complete package, her coat and condition completed the look. Her movement was sound and effective. If I could change one thing... it would be for her to give just a little more effort on the go around. Reserve Winners Female #329. From the Junior Puppy Bitch Class. At eight months, this youngster shows that promise we all look for. She, like the rest of the winners, showed that balance I want. Great puppy coat, lovely expression and side gait that will serve her well in the future.

Best of Breed #288. At Three years old, this bitch just grabs you and holds on, she is confident, alert and very feminine. She was shown in near per-fect condition. She has a outstanding expression, dark pigment and lovely eye. Her profile and bal-ance is exceptional. What really made the difference for me was her muscle tone. She was rock hard. You combine all these factors.... throw in great movement and presentation and you have your National Specialty Best in Show winner!!

20

Best of Opposite Sex #292. A won-

derful male just short of five years of age. He was my best male right from the start. He too grabs your eye with his masculine appearance and exceptional breed type. He is balanced, both front and rear. Pre-sented in lovely condition and coat. His down and back was very clean. I

would have liked a little more reach in front on the go around. A dog of great quality, he pushed the eventual winner all the way.

Select Dog #287. A mature five year old. Very much a male, he was a little too heavy for me on the day. Showed exceptunal breed type and proper movement. He was a contender right from the start.

Select Bitch #110. Coming up on three years of age, this bitch kept my attention with her lovely type and condition. She had a very good side gait, but was a little loose in front coming at me.

21

Award of Merit and Best Puppy In Specialty #284. One of my most interesting decisions of the day. Here stood a seven month old baby champion. She had some good competition for this award.... but I could not over look her excep-tional profile, expression and move-ment. She stood like a rock and moved like a pro and flat out asked for the win.

AMBASSADOR AWARD The Ambassador Award is sponsored by Mar-garet Stewardson from Regina in memory of her dog Shawnie. The owner of the recipient must prove the dog's involvement in "doing good" in the community. The recipient of the Award in 2015 was Dorice Stancher for the outstanding work her dog Krista has contributed to the community.

Krista was the very first Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier to pass the Canine Good Citizen Advanced (CGCA) test which she took at the crowded Meet the Breeds held at the Javits Center in New York City. Krista has proven herself both in and out of the conformation ring, but one of her most favourite things is therapy visits. For the past four and a half years she has visited Camp Dream Street for children with cancer. Krista has brought both joy and comfort to those she has visited. She also visits at our local library partici-pating in the Read to a Dog program, visits adults with develop-mental disabilities at the Fair Lawn Opportunity Center, and has aided in presentations to the Girl Scouts and the elderly.

JUNIOR HANDLER

Sydney Robinson won Junior Handler. Sydney has proven to be an amazing handler and maintains a special connection with the dogs she shows in the ring.
