Wheaten Ambassador Award Presented to the SCWT that has made a difference in the community.
CH Banner Sweet Talkin’ Guy RN RA CGC TDI
Owned By Carol Carlson Bred by John and Pam Mandeville
Shown by John, Bob was entirely owner/breeder han-
dled within the Bred-By Dog class completing his champion-ship at 13 months old. Carol met Bob at his second weekend of shows when he was just eight months old and knew he was the dog for her. At the suggestion of John and Pam, she enrolled this enthusiastic, rambunctious boy in obedience training and emerged within a few months with a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title. But they didn't stop there.
Next Carol obtained his TDI so he could do therapy vis-its. He visits nursing homes and the seniors anxiously await his arrival, waving before he even arrives in the facility. He is one of the most popular campers at Aaron's Acres a camp for chil-dren with special needs, and is the reading dog at the local li-brary, where the reward is a coveted Bob dog kiss.
His early foundation in obedience led him to success in Rally earning a RN, RA and setting him on the path to his new goal--a RE title. Although Carol has been involved with Wheatens for almost 50 years, this was the very first title she put on a dog herself. Bob is herding instinct certified having tested with DelVal in 2011, and worked as the distraction dog for the SCWTCA CGC and TDI testing.
Bob dog and his owner exemplify the can-do attitude, teamwork and drive, and most importantly the giving of self, associated with The Wheaten Ambassador Award. I applaud their accomplishments and wish them continued success both in the performance ring and in making the world a little better place thanks to Wheaten intervention.
Rescue Family of the year The person, or family that exhibits extraordinary care, dedication and personal sacrifice in their rescue efforts. Awarded on behalf of the SCWTCA rescue team.
Ms. Nancy Fox, Jill Nowak, and Holly Holly’s story — It started with a hiker in Monroe, MI finding a stray dog with a note tied to her collar.
SCWTCA Rescue was contacted and Holly came to us in
October 2011. She was extremely vicious to other dogs, but fine with all humans. Her condition was so severe that she was fostered by two different SCWTCA foster families prior to place-ment. After a couple of futile months of trying to find an ap-propriate family for Holly, Ms. Julie Burdick, one of our breeder members listed Holly for adoption on her wheaten website. It was a great idea, listing an available rescue on a breeder’s site for people who were looking for a wheaten. In a matter of weeks, Nancy Fox contacted Julie about Holly’s availability. Holly, Nancy, and Jill would never have been united without Julie’s timely offer.
Holly had been listed as a spayed bitch both on petfind-er and Julie’s sites. Holly was seen by veterinarians at both of her SCWTCA rescue homes and determined to have been spayed. Holly spotted blood at her foster home and she was taken to the foster’s vet for a checkup. The vet noticed a scar in the area where a spay would have occurred and opined that the spay had been “botched”, but he was fairly certain that even though Holly was spotting, she had been spayed.
SCWTCA shipped Holly to Nancy and Jill in January 2012. Within a few weeks, Nancy reported that Holly had begun spotting blood. Having been notified of the spotting in-cident at Holly’s foster home, she had taken her to her vet as a precaution. The vet performed an emergency spay on Holly and discovered a tumor on her ovary and determined that as the cause of the spotting. Holly had never been spayed!!! Most of our adopters would have called to complain about the spotting and asked us for help. Not Nancy and Jill. They responded to the severity of the condition and out of con-cern took a dog they had just gotten to their vet at their own expense to have Holly properly taken care of. It should be noted that SCWTCA did reimburse their expenses due to the prior existing condition, but not because Nancy and Jill re-quested it. These actions for Holly alone would have merited their nomination for Rescue Family of the Year, but they im-mediately contacted a local behaviorist to help Holly with her dog aggression issues. The behaviorist taught them techniques to use body language, blocking, and distraction to help Holly in the pres-ence of other dogs. The behaviorist also taught Holly the “Watch Me” command with treat reward. Nancy and Jill worked with Holly. They exposed her to life experiences. Here is some direct information from Nancy on the training techniques that they used:
We took Holly on a 3 week camping trip to the Oregon Coast. We took her on daily walks around the campground as well as numerous walks on the beach where she was able to run freely off lead for short periods. At the beginning, she was very territorial. The last camping trip 2 weeks ago she was able to lay on her campsite watching dogs walk by without acknowledging them.
When we are getting ready to go camping she hops in
the van and gets on her bed ready to go. When we went to the Clackamus River Holly was able to
share her campsite with 3 other dogs and go on walks side by side. We haven't seen a serious aggression toward other dogs in 3 months. She loves kids of all ages. She camped with 4 teenag-ers for 3 days and shared her home for 2 weeks with 3 young kids from the age of 4 to 10 and loved all of them.
She is learning to play by watching other dogs and mim-icking their behavior. She plays with a small dog that is on our usual walking route and has an attachment to a 16 year old chow. She is able to spend the night with my sisters 2 dogs. It has taken lots of time and energy on our part but is paying off.
In January we enlisted the help of a behavior specialist. She worked with us to be relaxed and not show Holly that we were nervous when confronted with other dogs and to be con-sistent. We worked hours walking towards other dogs, turning Holly around blocking Holly's view, trying again and again until we could get close enough to walk by. My sister brought one of her dogs over so we could practice. Then we went up by her house to practice as well. We also worked on this with our daily walks. Holly stayed at my sister's house last weekend without incidence. She doesn't stay upset by walking past other dogs these days. We walk quickly by and she gets on with checking out the area. We are currently working on Watch Me with treats when she does watch us. She is able to do this with lots of distractions.
She is such a joy. Every day at least one person asks what kind of a dog she is. They say how cute she is and well behaved. We continue our daily walks which she looks forward to and barks if she thinks it's time to go out and we aren't moving to-ward the door. Thank you for all you do.

AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award The AKC Outstanding sportsmanship award program
was established in 2006 to provide each member club with an AKC medallion to award to one of its own on a yearly basis.
This award honors those individuals who deserve special recognition that have made a difference in the sport of purebred dogs, embodied the AKC Code of Sportsmanship, and have been an active and valued member of an AKC member club. Medallions are awarded solely at the Club’s Discretion.
The recipient will also be listed on the AKC Web site.
Past Honorees: 2007 Nancy Butler 2008 Elena Landa 2009 Karla Baer Cohen 2010 Emily Holden 2011 Jan Van Ness 2012 Betsy Geertson
The Jan Linscheid Fellowship Award The Jan Linscheid Fellowship award was established in 1983 and honors the memory of Jan Linscheid, a Wheaten fancier from Enderlin, NO. Jan was “owned” by her first Wheaten in the early 1970’s and Jan and her Finnegan Wheatens were a very familiar sight to all exhibitors in Minnesota, the upper Great Plains and mid-western Canada.
Jan was a real devotee of the SCWT and the welfare of the breed was utmost in her mind in all her dog activities. Although she lived in a part of the country that saw few dog shows and even fewer Wheatens, Jan participated in SCWTCA activities including the Roving Specialty in Minnesota in 1980.
Jan lost a five year fight against cancer in 1982. The Roving Specialty held in Denver in 1983 was dedicated to her memory. Those who knew Jan will always miss her cheery smile and her enthusiasm for life and for the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier.
The award is presented when deemed appropriate to a member who has made an extraordinary contribution to the SCWT Club of America and to the breed and who epitomizes the outstanding human qualities of Jan Linscheid.
