Joy Global Invests in the Future with Junior Achievement Linda Henderson, Joy Global in Franklin serves on the volunteer board for Junior Achievement in the Oil Region. Recently she presented Gail Whitney, JA Regional Executive Director, and Lisa Groner, JA Board Chair with a check to provide 4 elementary classroom programs. Joy Global supports JA throughout the country and is glad to be making an educational impact in Franklin. School Superintendent Pamela Dye encouraged Junior Achievement to expand programming to a second elementary school this year; Joy Global’s support makes this expansion possible. Junior Achievement gives young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices. In conjunction with other community volunteers, Joy Global employees will deliver relevant, hands-on experiences that give students knowledge and skills in financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship. JA programs empower students to make a con-nection between what they learn in school and how it can be applied in the real world – enhancing the rele-vance of their classroom learning and increasing their understanding of the value of staying in school. Joy Global recognizes how this collaboration will benefit the development of a future workforce ready to fill the positions most needed to keep them successfully competing it the marketplace. For more information, visit http://www.jaerie.org/.

UPMC Employees Give Back During the Holiday Season UPMC Northwest is proud of its long history of taking part in community events, especially around the holiday season. Beginning with Thanksgiving, UPMC Northwest donates to the Friends for Food Campaign, and then immediately begins preparations for other holiday projects including Spirit of Giving at the Cranberry Mall and the Adopt-a-Family program, both benefitting Community Services of Venango County. Other holiday projects include the Salvation Army’s Treasures for Children gift tree, and new this year, a Holiday Stocking project that will benefit several local agencies.

Along with direct project participation, UPMC Northwest holds a blood drive in December for Central Blood Bank, and sponsors several community events in Venango County throughout the season. The UPMC Cancer Center at UPMC Northwest is hosting a Memorial Christmas Tree Celebration on December 4, and invites families of cancer victims and survivors to place an ornament on a tree in the Cancer Center in memory or honor of a loved one. The hospital’s Light Up Night is held immediately after the Cancer Center event, where the hospital’s live tree in the outdoor courtyard, as well as several trees around the perimeter of the hospital, are lit for the season.

Oil Region Alliance Promotes Dan Twombly John R. Phillips II, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Oil Region Alliance of Business, Industry, and Tourism announced this month that Dan Twombly was promoted from Sr. Vice President of Finance and Compli-ance to the position of Executive Vice President. Dan has been with the Alliance since 2005 and was instrumental in the combining of the financial systems of the four separate organizations that merged to form the Oil Region Alliance. Dan has served in various capacities; he deals with land transactions, grant compliance, membership, administration issues, and is also in charge of all technology systems. “Dan has shown great leadership throughout this year since the reorganization of the Oil Region Alliance, and I count on his steady advice on a daily basis. I feel he is ready for new challenges and opportunities, and I want to capitalize on his marketing background and training to help accomplish the mission of the Alliance in Economic Development, Tourism, and Heritage and Recreational Development. Dan has helped me convert the Alliance from a departmental model to a team-based environment. With the reduction in staff over the years, everyone has really taken on much more responsibility. Dan truly embraces the mission of the Alliance and wakes up every morning with the sole purpose of creating a better Oil Region for all who live, work, and play here. I am sure our Board of Directors and all our stakeholders are proud that Dan does such a great job of representing this Agency.”

Darole Pertz Honored by CASA On October 19th Venango County CASA gathered with a packed house full of supporters and volunteers and officers of the court to honor all of their volunteers. The organization honored two distin-guished volunteers: The Volunteer of the Year and The Service Provider of the Year. Venango County President Judge Oliver Lobaugh announced Darole Pertz as Volunteer of the Year. Lobaugh heaped praise on Pertz and the other dozen and half CASA volunteers telling how they focus in on one child, becoming a mentor, confidant and friend. In accepting the Volunteer of the Year Award, Darole Pertz related being a CASA volunteer was something she very nearly passed up. After her training, as she took on her first case she learned first hand how valuable CASA is to families and to the courts. She watched other service providers working hard to give families the tools to do well and live well. But she also learned of the challenges and heart rending parts of her job too. She wanted to , but with the encouragement of fellow advocates and family, she moved on and feels more effective than ever before in her job of bringing a child safely home. Wayne Burnside, of Child to Family Connections, in Franklin was honored as Service Provider of the Year.

Celebrates 5 Years!

The Bricks of Franklin, located on 13th Street in Franklin, will be celebrating their 5th year in business this month. When Bill and Karen Carey opened in 2007, the economic pinch started to tighten. Being parents of two children themselves, they realized that when folks looked at their home budgets, dining out was usually the first thing to go. That’s why they made the menu as affordable as possible for families and even single people alike. Offering a Kid’s Eat Free option on Monday nights starts the school week out right and on budget. Customers have made this a traditional night to go out for dinner and catch up with their friends and family.

Other events have become a staple in their customer’s schedules like Trivia on Wednesday nights, Karaoke on Friday nights, and Live Entertainment on Saturday nights. The Bricks is always a fun, clean place to take your family and friends for a great time. The Brick’s cherishes their customers, old and new, and are very grateful for their business. The Bricks’ customers have shown a loyalty to their business and have become an extended family. They extend their warmest wishes for the holiday season and are looking forward to another 5 years!
