Summer Term 2014 Departing Colleagues As another school year draws to an end we have to say farewell to two of our colleagues, Mr Davies (Deputy Headteacher) and Mrs Armstrong (Music Teacher). We thank you for all that you have done for us over the years. We thank you for your hard work. We thank you for being friendly colleagues and co-workers, whose warmth and good humour have continually brightened our school. We will sorely miss you both and we wish you the best of luck. A few words from Mr Davies (Deputy Headteacher) “It is with sadness that I write just before I am due to leave Croesyceiliog. I have been fortunate to gain a Headship of my own and am very excited about that opportunity. Nevertheless my excitement is tinged with some sadness as I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Croesyceiliog. I am pleased to have played a small part in the success of the school and will leave ever grateful at the opportunities I have had here. I shall miss the pupils, staff and parents and want to leave with a final piece of advice for all our pupils. Make sure you get what you can in terms of experiences and qualifications whilst at Croesyceiliog. There is no doubt that this will lead to a better life as an adult. Cwmbran has some special youngsters who are as good as those from any other part of the country. It is up to you pupils to prove it. Good luck to you all!” Farewell from Mrs Armstrong “I would like to take this opportunity to say a final farewell to the pupils and parents at Croesyceiliog School. After eleven years teaching music at school, I have decided that I now need to dedicate all my time to my young family. I certainly am sad to be leaving but look forward to the challenges of raising young children in the years ahead. I look back with fond memories of my time at Croesy and recall very many happy moments of teaching music, directing Junior Choir and Orchestra, involvement in school productions as well as my years serving as Assistant Head of Year. I also had the immense privilege of teaching in a school in Uganda for orphaned children several years ago during our summer holidays and I received incredible support from the pupils and parents at Croesy in fundraising activities as well as donating quality clothing, books and equipment to the Ugandan School. I saw first-hand what a difference this made to the everyday lives of these children and for that I am truly thankful. I would like to thank all the children I have taught in the past eleven years for their hard work and commitment but most of all for the satisfaction it has given me to see them develop and grow into mature and well- rounded young adults.” Tutor group of the term Year 7 JR Year 8 NH Year 9 HT Year 10 RE Twitter Do you know that Croesyceiliog School has a Twitter account? Rowing across the riverJames and John are on the two opposite banks of a river. They both have a rowing

boat. They both start at the same time towards the opposite bank. They pass each other at 180 meters from the bank where James departed. When reaching the opposite bank, they both take a rest for the same amount of time before they return. On the way back, they pass each other at 100 meters from the bank from where James returned. James and John both row with a constant speed, but John rows faster.

The Question: How wide is the river?

‘Eccedentesiast’Meaning: a person who fakes a smile or hides behind a smile. From the Latin ecce (look), dente (teeth).

Tip of the Term

Stationery and Stationary Ever get these two words confused? Here’s a useful way to remember which is which.

Stationery - has E (for envelope) at the end of the word. Stationary - has an A at the end of the word, as in Standing.

NUMERACY SOlUTION TO: ROWING ACROSS THE RIvER Call the requested width of the river r. The first time that James and John meet, the total distance that they have travelled together equals the width of the river, or r. The second time that James and John meet, the total distance that they have travelled together equals twice the width of the river plus the width of the river, so 3 x r. Because James and John row with a constant speed, it also holds that the distance that James travelled in total at the second meeting, equals 3 times the distance he travelled in total at the first meeting. The distance that James travelled in total at the first meeting is 180. The distance that James travelled in total at the second meeting is r + 100. When we combine the above, we get the following equation: 3 x 180 = r + 100. When we solve this equation we find that r = 440. Therefore, the river is 440

The Science of Superheroesby Lois Gresh and Robert Weinberg

The truth about superpowers . . . science fact or science fiction? “An entertaining and informative guide to comic book wonders bound to come.” —Julius Schwartz, Editor Emeritus, DC Comics Superman, Batman, The X–Men, Flash, Spider Man . . . they protect us from evildoers, defend truth and justice, and, occasionally, save our planet from certain doom. Yet, how much do

we understand about their powers? In this engaging yet serious work, Lois Gresh and Robert Weinberg attempt to answer that question once and for all. From X–ray vision to psychokinesis, invisibility to lightspeed locomotion, they take a hard, scientific look at the powers possessed by all of our most revered superheroes, and a few of the lesser ones, in an attempt to sort fact from fantasy. In the process, they unearth some shocking truths that will unsettle, alarm, and even terrify all but the most fiendish of supervillains. Lois Gresh (Rochester, NY) has written eight novels and nonfiction books as well as dozens of short stories and has been nominated for national fiction awards six times. Robert Weinberg (Oak Forest, IL) is a multiple award–winning author of novels, nonfiction books, short stories and comics.

GP Taylor visitThe author G P Taylor visited Croesyceiliog School in February 2014. G. P. Taylor is the author of several best-selling novels, including: Shadowmancer, The Curse of Salamander Street, Wormwood and Tersias, as well as the Mariah Mundi trilogy. He worked closely with groups of pupils from years 7-12 on creative writing. There was also a book signing and question and answer session opportunity with G P Taylor. The day was a huge success and we received a lot of positive feedback both from pupils and parents.

Inspector CallsOn Friday 25th April the school hosted an external production on ‘An Inspector Calls’ By J.b Priestley. This play is a set text for year 11 students and their examination on the text is worth 20% of their GCSE English literature mark. The production was very well attended with over 100 students coming in during the school holidays.

It was equally pleasing to see several year 10 students attending prior to studying it next year. The English department were grateful to the canteen manager, Carol Davies, for providing refreshments also.

National Maths TestThe following pupils won awards in a recent National Maths test:

Year 8 – Meghan Hopkins, Oliver Alderson, Macey Jones, Elliot Cocker, Ffion Vann, Jay Davies, Connor Jewell, Rhys Jones, Eleanor Brown.Year 7 – Rhian Lamrick, Charlotte Wilkinson, Harvey Sayani, Catrin Herbert.Well done to all!

Duke of Edinburgh AwardThe one where they all got lost!! Wednesday June 18th saw Year 10 and 11 pupils come together to undertake their expeditions for the Bronze award of the Duke of Edinburgh award.

32 pupils arrived in school on Wednesday morning in the wonderful sunshine dressed and ready to walk 26K over two days. They were fresh and ready to go.

Mr Buckley and Mr Taylor took 16 year 11 pupils, who were undertaking their Qualifying walk from Monmouth, and Mrs Melbourne and Miss David, with help from Clare Adams from Torfaen Education services, took 15 practice year 10 students from Grosmont.

Each group were to walk 13k to the campsite in Llantilio Crossenny to meet up and swap stories pitch tents, cook on trangias and generally enjoy the camping life.

Mr Jones joined us at camp, and quickly took charge of the sometimes excitable boys!

The next day saw each group replicate the others walk to finish where the others started. It should have been simple...BUT1 group went to England! 1 group went for a drink!1 group didn’t fully follow the countryside laws! (Dan Williams & Doug Sullivan)And that was just the practice groups!

As for our expert year 11 students, they walked really well, navigated really well, and generally behaved excellently! The assessor Mr Taylor was very pleased with what he saw, and pointed out some excellent teamwork – well done Rhys and Ryan!

Overall it has been an amazing expedition, with lots of lessons learnt. The students have been excellent ambassadors for Croesyceiliog school. Special thanks to the following staff, who have given up their time and have contributed to the rich extra-curricular education these students have been lucky to have; Mr Buckley, Mr Taylor, Mr Jones, Mr Morgan, Miss David and Clare Adams

Design & Technology DepartmentWe were visited by WJEC’s principal examiner Mr. Matthew Burrows in May for moderation of our GCSE courses in Graphic Design and Product Design. There were several briefs offered. Many of our students chose to produce a light or designed a book and point of sale display. However, one student ‘Tom vann’ chosen to produce a wine bottle stand inspired by designer Philippe Starck. We were delighted by Mr. Burrows’s comments of how impressed he was by the standard of the controlled assessment folios and also the quality and innovative products produced by our students. Tom was overjoyed to learn afterwards that the examiners favourite product was his wine rack!

It has also been another successful year in GCSE Catering and Food & Nutrition practical examinations. It has been wonderful to see our pupils produce such high quality dishes worthy of many high street restaurants. The brief this year in GCSE Catering was to design and cook a 2 course meal from a foreign country. The pupils are tested on their practical skills and demonstrated high skills such as making fresh pasta, bread, meringues and ice cream. We had a great selection of countries represented from Italy and Spain to Mexico! We certainly have some budding Michelin star chefs at Croesy!!

Mr. Groves Acting Head of Design & Technology said, “I am so proud of our students for their hard work and commitment.” “Many of our students took full advantage of extra revision sessions offered by the department after school and during the Easter and half term holidays.” A huge thank you to the staff for their dedication and commitment!

Happy Summer Holidays!Mrs Robinson is delighted to say that 7JR have had a very successful first year at Croesy and she is delighted that we’ve all made it to the summer term without loss or injury!

7JR have welcomed new members Jason Butler and Lily-Rose Davies to make our form complete and are looking forward to getting to know you both better. 7JR have several trips to look forward to this final term including, Belmont Abby, Cardiff Bay and Black Country Museum. The final event for this year will be sports day where JR hopes to have every member of the form participating in some way. Finally, Mrs Robinson would like to wish everyone a happy summer holiday, hoping it is warm, sunny and you all have a safe return in September to become 8JR. Look after yourselves.

Year 7 School CouncilEvery month, 2 pupils from each form group meet with Miss Negri to discuss school life. The best thing about being a council member is that they get the opportunity to meet and talk with other members, making new friends and developing their interpersonal skills. All minutes of the council meetings go to form tutors, Heads of Year and the Senior leadership Team so that everyone hears their views and can act on their concerns.

Members have written extracts to go into the school prospectus about their school experiences and their role as council members and have helped raise awareness of certain charities. In addition, members have passed on concerns about damage to the school property and the damage has been rectified. The school building has been improved following concerns raised through the school council.

The 2 pupils from each form have done a fantastic job this year and there have been significant improvements made to the school.

Well done all!

Year 9

Meeting of Minds During the spring term six year 9 pupils took part in a project to help tackle anti-social behaviour in our community.

This was a joint project run by Bron Afon’s youth & community team and funded by Gwent Polices’ Commissioners fund. Some of the funding awarded was to build a fence

around the retirement home as some “youthful curiosity” had made some of the residents feel frightened. This retirement complex is on a path many Croesyceiliog pupils use on their way to and from school, so naturally our pupils were chosen to represent the younger generation. Our pupils met once a week with residents of Woodland Court retirement home with the aim of building respect between the generations. They took part in workshops where the focus was on recognising similarities between the generations and to challenge the perceived stereotypes that they all had.

Over the six weeks Croesceiliog pupils established friendships with some of the older generation. They were enthralled by the stories of the ‘olden days’ and found a new respect for a generation they had previously admitted “looked boring.” The residents of Woodland Court looked forward to the afternoon meetings and also admitted to perceiving teenagers as “hoodies” and “antisocial.” The meetings culminated in two generations all posing for photos wearing hoodies and hoping there was a way they could meet up again.

This project was a major success. Bron Afon are looking to roll it out across Torfaen using our pupils as ambassadors. Some of them have already attended the youth forum to discuss and promote it.

Woodland Court residents are keen to work with us again. They are currently working on funding for a gardening project and have asked our pupils if they would volunteer. Our pupils are very enthusiastic about this opportunity.

NetballSuccessNia Taylor (8NH) was selected as one of the top 20 players (out of approximately 150 players) in the Welsh Netball Association’s Under 13 National Club Finals in May. She also trains with the South East Wales Development Hub.

Radio 2 - 500 words competitionlast half term some of Mrs Sharp’s pupils entered stories into the Radio 2 500 words competition. However not all the stories were ready for the deadline. Mrs Sharp entered all the stories into an in-house competition.

The stories were judged by Mrs Taylor and Lauran Twells (in year 11) and Stan Ready’s 8CJ story “The Farm” was the winner!

2nd place was Connor Goodacre’s 8SM story “Six Survivors and a Cowboy” and in 3rd was Jay Blake’s 8MP “Welcome to my World”.There will be a prize for the winner but a big well done to Connor and Jay too.

volunteering in Year 9One of our targets for Year 9 was to volunteer to help in the school community. The pupils have really got on board and been fantastic.

This term alone, Year 9 pupils have been out with senior staff to visit primary schools to talk with Year 6 pupils about life @ Croesyceiliog. They have also helped out at the parents’ evenings for the primary school, talking to parents and pupils about their own experiences of the transition process.

During May the call went out for volunteers to be form supporters for next year. These are posts held by Year 10 students each year. Form supporters work closely with the new Year 7 pupils and their form tutors, helping to settle the new pupils in and be a friendly face if there are any problems. The response this year was fantastic, with over 40 pupils applying for just 24 positions. Interviews with Miss Lloyd have been held and we await the final list.

A superb effort, well done all those who have volunteered this year.

Attendance Counts! Why is good attendance important? Good attendance at school is vital for pupils to achieve their full educational potential. Pupils with good attendance records benefit in the following ways:-

• Continuity of learning which makes progress and retention easier • Improved performance in coursework tasks • Enhanced performance in examinations • Continuity of relationships and friendships • Good references for further education or employment • Good habits are formed for later life What constitutes good attendance? Attendance percentages are not like examination results: an attendance percentage needs to be in the high nineties before it can be considered good. Consider the following examples over the course of a school year (188 days).

10 days absence = 95% attendance = 50 lessons missed 20 days absence = 89% attendance = 100 lessons missed 29 days absence = 85% attendance = 145 lessons missed 38 days absence = 80% attendance = 190 lessons missed 47 days absence = 75% attendance = 235 lessons missed Research states that having 20 (89%) days off school every year means that a pupil will probably obtain a whole grade lower in their exams than they are really capable of. Pupils with less than 85% attendance are unlikely to gain 5 A*-C GCSE qualifications.

In order for an attendance record to be good it must be 96% or above:- 100% = excellent attendance 98% = good attendance 96% = satisfactory attendance 95% - 90% = concerningBelow 90% is a serious cause for concern Each year, a large number of pupils in every year group achieve 100% attendance showing that this is an achievable target. In addition, a number of pupils have achieved this level of attendance for a number of years. Students with excellent attendance at Croesyceiliog School are rewarded with certificates and prizes.

Year 12

ArcadiaTwenty-four Y12 English literature students were lucky enough to savour a theatrical treat to boost understanding of Sir Tom Stoppard’s acclaimed Arcadia, a contemporary masterpiece and AS level exam text.

The sell-out April production, by Bristol company Shakespeare at the Tobacco Theatre, proved to be a box office hit and a valuable study aid for students engaged in unravelling Stoppard’s intellectual challenges and intrigues; all delivered with perfectly timed, razor sharp and saucy wit.In an intimate, ‘in the round’ setting, our Croesy audience were able to experience a time travelling adventure across the centuries and witness first-hand the changing notions of the Arcadian dream. The cast delivered poignant and passionate characters embroiled in the mysteries of history, sex, chaos theory and Newtonian equations, alongside an academic accusation of murder against Lord Byron! Highly rated by ‘The Guardian’ reviewer, Lyn Gardner, our students undoubtedly benefitted from experiencing director Andrew Hilton’s interpretation, credited with being “more than a match for Stoppard’s dancing intelligence…he found a flaming warmth, too...”

What can parents do to support their child to achieve good attendance levels?Parents play a very important role in ensuring the good attendance records of their children. Below is a list of suggested strategies:

• Encourage full attendance• Stress the importance of full attendance to your child• Do not allow your child to have time off for minor complaints or illnesses: if

they are well enough to be up and about they are generally well enough to attend our school

• Monitor your child’s attendance report carefully• Try to book any medical or dental appointments in out of school hours or

make them from the very end of the day• Ensure your child is punctual (lateness can lead to legal action)• Inform the school of any absence on first day of absence and subsequent days• Take any vacations in school holidays, not during term time• If your child seems unwilling to attend, contact the school as soon as possible:

do not let your child stay at home as this could set a precedent for the future

Uniform Reminder

Calling Home!It has been brought to our attention that some students were using their mobile phones to contact parents/carers and arrange for themselves to be collected from school. If students are feeling unwell, or have any other concerns they should go to first aid in reception.

They need to be properly assessed and have their name and details logged in the medical book. The school needs to keep an accurate record of what the illness or concern and will offer medical assistance as necessary.

May we kindly request that parents/carers remind their children of the need to speak to the reception first aid team; we can phone home and discuss any concerns or arrange for the child to be collected, if necessary.

Students should not be contacting home themselves, or be using their mobiles to do this. We are sure you will appreciate the Health and Safety implications of doing so.

Your co-operation is very much appreciated.

Football

Senior soccer boys lost to Cwmcarn in the final of the Gwent Cup at the start of May.

Year 13 Captain Lewis Iles led by example and we were unlucky to win, with shots from Amond Tumbapo and Joshua Parr hitting the post.

Rounders

Rounders club is new this year and has been a great success. Girls are regularly turning up at lunchtimes and after school to train and play. If the popularity of this sport continues to grow we can hopefully arrange fixtures for them next year against other schools.

Rugby

The following Year 9 & 10 boys were involved in the Morgan Griffiths Final at Parc-Y-Strade against Cynnon valley during May and were Cup winners:

• Dan Babos (Year 9)

• Jacob Bridgeway

• Lewis Rosser

• Dougie Sullivan

• Will Thomas-Pace

• Daniel Williams

SportsGirls tennis has become very popular. Years 7 and 8 have been regularly attending lunchtime and after school practices. Year 8 and 9 have also been playing in the Tennis league. They have had some defeats but also had some great successes.

Year 8 boys have won 4 and lost 2 in the league so far and the Year 10 boys have also done the same.

Cricket

Fitness Club

Athletics

Croesyceiliog pupils have been attending cricket club in good numbers this year. The future is looking bright for our younger teams with notable talent such as Will Reed, Tom Alcock, lewis Edwards and Rob Marsh. The latter two have also represented the Year 9 cricket team.

Our shining light is still the Year 9’s who go marching on in the Gwent Cup with a comprehensive 8 wicket victory over Cwmcarn School. Year 9 Captain Ryan Avery leads by example and is confident of repeating last year’s heroics. In a statement Ryan said, “Losing to Caerleon in the final last year was a difficult pill to swallow but the boys learnt a lot that game and are desperate to go one step further”.

The school waits with baited breath.

Year 7 Fitness club has carried on again this term due to its popularity. The Year 7 club is aimed at girls and boys who don’t attend any other clubs or activities. The pupils are really enjoying trying lots of different ways to keep fit and be active. This will hopefully educate them about the importance of doing exercise but also help them identify how they like to keep fit and healthy.

Year 10 Boys have qualified for the Gwent finals of the Inter Schools Athletic CompetitonThomas Spokes (long jump) and Ellis Wharton (100m & 200m) have been selected to represent South East Wales in the Welsh School Finals in Brecon during July.

Danielle Jordan has been selected to represent Wales in Hockey at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer. Danielle has worked incredibly hard and her dedication and effort has paid off and she has been rewarded with this fantastic opportunity. Danielle will be playing against hosts Scotland, England, Malaysia and World Cup Runners Up Australia. The PE department are immensely proud of Danielle and wish her every success in Glasgow. You can follow her progress via @hockeywales, @bbcsport and of course via the PE Dept website @croesype, as well as BBC coverage.

Isobel Webb and Sara Davies both in Year 11 have been selected for Wales A in Hockey. The girls will play in a test series against Spain from July 11th-14th in Barcelona. This is a massive achievement as this is just one step away from the Welsh Senior Team and to reach this level whilst still under 16 is incredible. The PE Department are immensely proud of Isobel and Sara and wish them every success in Spain. Again you can follow the girls progress via @croesype and @hockeywales.

Hilston Park TripJuly 9th - 11th 40 Year 9 pupils will be going to Hilston Park Outdoor Education Centre for 3 days.
