Limits of the New Deal

– Most jobs went to men (head of households)

Limits of the New Deal

• African Americans– Federal relief programs enforced segregation in

the south– Didn’t receive professional jobs– Received lower pay than whites for same job– Social Security didn’t go to farmers and or

domestic workers– White businesses wouldn’t hire blacks– Lynching increased

Criticism of the New Deal

• Did too much– Mostly the rich business owners– They didn’t like paying more taxes– Thought that many of the ideas were socialistic

and went against capitalism– Took away individual freedoms

Criticism of the New Deal

• Didn’t do enough– The economy didn’t go

up quick enough

– The limited success of the New Deal caused an increase in progressive ideas

• Charles E. Coughlin – Radio priest that spoke out against the New Deal– Sometimes supported socialist ideas– Sometimes he supported capitalist ideas

• Huey Long – Country lawyer who became a governor then a Senator– Wanted high taxes on the wealthy– Grants for the rest of the families

• Arts were funded– Books like Grapes of Wrath, Gone With The

Wind and many more– Radio became a major medium of

entertainment– Movies like Duck Soup, Wizard of Oz and Snow

White and the Seven Dwarfs

• New Deal Monuments– Dams and buildings that were built as public

works projects– Many New Deal Agencies still exist– Social Security still exists
