The Most Lightwe

LECA coated and LECA·light coatedare Danish special product whichcombines thermal-insulation propertieswith non-capillary characteristics.

1.

LECA can be blown direct to the point of applica-tion through flexible hoses. The capacity is typically more than 1 m³ of LECAper minute.

2.

LECA can be delivered in bulk by lorries carryingup to 103 m³ at a time.

3.

LECA is also supplied in big-bags and 100 litreand 50 litre sacks. 1

An environment-friendly, natural product made fromplastic clay, LECA is inde-

structible, frost-resistant, non-combustible and

impervious to dry-rot, wet-rotand insect attack

LECA is an extremely lightweight, strong and thermally insulatingmaterial. These are valuable pro-perties when establishing solid-based floors, applying structuralfill, growing plants, and insulatingbasements, terraces and roofs. The size of the LECA particlesdetermines which property is pre-dominant and how the product isutilised in practice. LECA is there-fore available in different sizes fordifferent purposes.

Danish LECA and LECA·light arealso available in coated form forsolidbased floors. The coating, which is wholly non-toxic, impartswaterrepelling properties andensures that moisture absorptionfrom the soil does not extendbeyond the base layer of LECA orLECA·light.

LECA is the prime constituent inmany building materials, includingindustrially-made wall blocks andstructural components. LECA canalso usefully be employed in struc-tural concrete and lightweight mor-tar.

Blocks

Danish LECA blocks provideeffective protection againstthermal bridge and are suit-

able for foundations,floors and walls.

The blocks are easy to workwith and provide excellent

key for subsequent render ormortar application

LECA is used for making solidblocks of lightweight concrete, hol-low blocks and Lecaterm blocks.

LECA solid blocks are suitable forinner-leaf walls, foundations, base-ment walls, partitions and outerwalls. Specially-made LECA floorblocks for solid-based floors arealso available.

Special feature blocks like the hol-low block and the grooved blockare used for specific applications. The hollow block is especially use-ful as top of foundation under cavi-ty walls.

The grooved block gives the pos-sibility to make reinforced base-ment walls.Lecaterm blocks are made ofLECA lightweight concrete andfoam plastic. Lecaterm is a com-plete building system consisting ofstraight blocks and corner blocks.Lecaterm blocks are used for outerwalls an foundations.

Solid-basedFloors Danish LECA is exceptionally

well suited for solid-basedfloors.

LECA has thermally insula-ting, water-repelling andnon-capillary properties

and provides simple,lightweight floor construc-

tions at competitive prices

Coated LECALECA coated and LECA·lightcoated can be deposited inbulk and used for solid-basedfloors. There is no wastage asthe nodules adapt themselvescompletely along foundationsand around drains.

LECA Floor BlocksSolid-based floors can be con-structed entirely of LECA floorblocks. The blocks have ther-mally insulating and non-capillaryproperties and can be surface-strengthened with a grout wash ofcement or sand. The blocks are then ready for thenext stage of the floor construc-tion.

LECA makes it easy to con-struct slopes on flat roofs

and carry out roof insulationat the same time

General ProcedureDeposit the LECA and level to therequired gradient.Apply welded LECA netting to sta-bilise the surface.Roll the surface and lay sheets ofmineral wool for added insulation. Finish by installing underpaperand roofing.

LECA can also beused to fill cavities inan existing roof sur-face prior to renova-tion. This avoids softareas in the new roof.

Form-stable Finish In areas of the roof destined forlater structural penetration theLECA can be mixed with cementand water.

Light Fill

LECA can be used aslightweight fill in cases wherethere is a need to ensure sta-

bility, prevent settlementand compensate for heavy

loads

StabilityLECA light fill provides in-creased stability for em-bankments built on clayinclines, for sheet-pileharbour walls and forcoastal road construc-tion. LECA can be usedto prevent land slides orpiling failure at noise-abatement rampartsalong roads or buildingswith pile footings.

SettlementPreventionLECA light fill can pre-vent the settlement whichmay occur when roads andembankments built on soft groundare subject to increased loading.Houses which normally requirepile footings can be erected on acushion of LECA light fill.

Load CompensationRoads, buildings and open spacesconstructed on compressibledeposits or sloping ground can beconsolidated with LECA light fill.

Roof Gardens

LECA is ideal for drainagepurposes and slope con-struction in roof gardens

Bulk LECA can be used inroof gardens for drainagepurposes and for con-structing and eliminatingslopes. With its combina-tion of effective drainageand low density, LECA isthe perfect material forcreating roof gardens onexisting buildings. Spreada bed of LECA on top ofthe roof membrane andany insulation, then coverthe nodules with a fibrecloth to serve as a basefor the garden proper. The garden can be con-structed using gravel andpaving or soil/Lecamix forplants.

Outer Walls,Inner-leaf WallsandPartitions

LECA blocks enable fast,easy building.

LECA blocks provide strong, robust walls and ensure a

healthy indoor climate

Lightweight concrete blocks ofLECA are used for construction ofouter walls, inner-leaf walls andpartitions. LECA blocks are inorganic andimpervious to dry-rot, wet-rot andinsect attack. They are also frost-resistant evenunder extreme temperature condi-tions. In addition, they have excel-lent thermal-retention properties, which contributes to a pleasantindoor climate.

ShapingThe blocks are simple to shapeusing a carbide-toothed cuttingsaw, small jobs being carried outwith a masonry hammer or axe.Division of the blocks is easiest toperform using a standard blockcutter. Chasing and drilling opera-tions in the finished LECA wall arereadily accomplished with a con-crete power tool.

Surface TreatmentLECA is eminently suitable for ren-dering and plastering by bothmanual and mechanical means.

DimensionsFor inner-leaf walls and partitionsDanish LECA blocks are manufac-tured in 100 mm, 150 mm and 190mm thicknesses. The 100 mm and 150 mm sizesare normally used for cavity wallsand curtain walls. The length andheight dimensions of LECA blocksare 490 mm x 190 mm.

StrengthDanish LECA blocks are suppliedin block class 3.0 MPa with a den-sity of 600 kg/m³.

BeamsWall beams are made of LECA con-crete with a density of 1400 kg/m³.Wall beams are manufactured inthe same width and height dimen-sions as LECA blocks and inlengths up to 3.49 m.

BricksFor masonry infill, partitions andrepairs use LECA class 4 brickswhich have a density of 700 kg/m³.

BasementWalls

LECA provides warm, drybasements. As well as a sub-

stantial weight-saving com-pared with conventionally-

cast basement walls

By virtue of their high strength, excellent thermal-insulation prop-erties, frost resistance and minimalmoisture absorption, LECA blocksare the ideal solution for basementouter walls.A special grooved LECA blockprovides possibillity to place rein-forcement in the bed joints.

Below ground level, basementwalls built of LECA blocks must begrounded, asphalted and coatedwith cement mortar.Basement walls must always beequipped with perimeter drains. Wall drainage can be establishedwith 50 mm or 75 mm LECA drain-age blocks or using bulk LECA.

Foundations

Danish LECA blocks provideeffective termination of cold

conduction in foundations

Capping the head of outer-wallfoundations with two rows ofLECA blocks, provides effectivefloor protection at the cold-criticalpoint adjacent to the concreteslab. LECA blocks can also be used tocap internal foundations, thus ter-minating the moisture and cold

conduction which otherwise origi-nates from the foundation con-crete. Standard-size LECA bricks (100 x55 x 230 mm) can be used fortransition purposes at foundations.

For foundations subjected toheavy loads, LECA class 5.0 MPahigh-strength blocks can be used. For foundation subject to 1½-storehouses LECA class 2.0 MPa light-weight blocks can be used.

Where extra foundation insulationis required, use Lecaterm-blocks. For application below cavity walls, use LECA hollow blocks. These are available in widths of290 mm and 330 mm.

Cleaning filterInexpensive, environment-

friendly treatment of house-hold sewage in areas not

connected to sewer systems

A bed of LECA can be used as acleaning filter in conjunction withboth new and existing sewageinstallations. Outflows fromkitchen, bath and WC are passedto a septic tank from which thesewage flows to the cleaning filter.

A cleaning filter is highly effective;controlled experiments have quan-tified the expected breakdown ofsewage wastes as

Bi5 90%Suspended materials 70%Ammonia/ammonium 45%Total nitrogen 30%Total phosphorous 30%

where Bi5 = biological oxygenconsumption over a five-day peri-od, ie. the amount of oxygen usedby the microorganisms to breakdown the organic substances inthe course of five days. In the experiments the pH-value ofthe filtered sewage averaged aconstant 7.8.

Eliminates odour problemsquickly, simply and

effectively. Risk of frost damage is also

reduced

Blowing from a roadtanker with blowingdevice, it takes one hourto cover the contents of aliquid manure storagetank with a layer of LECA7-10 cm thick - and to putan effective stop to odourproblems. And if a few grains areeventually dischargedfrom the tank along withthe contents, all well andgood - LECA has soil-improving properties.

LightweightMortar

Special-produced mortar forconstruction and rendering

of masonry

The U-value of complete masonrystructures built with LECA light-weight mortar is superior to thatprovided by conventional mortar.LECA lightweight mortar alsoweighs less than conventionalmortar, which has benefits fortransportation and application. LECA lightweight mortar can be

manufactured locally, whichmeans that compressive strength, density and insulation value canbe adjusted to the requirements ofthe individual factories. DanskLeca A/S supplies LECA directfrom dry storage for production oflightweight mortar.

purpose properties

StructuralConcrete

The aggregate used in con-crete structures can often besubstituted by LECA. This is

a cost-effective solutionwhich enables the overall

weight of the construction tobe reduced

LECA structuralconcrete is particu-larly useful where itis required to min-imise the weight ofthe overall con-struction. Lightweight struc-tural concrete isrequired underEuropean stan-dards to have adensity of less than2000 kg/m³.

Using Danish LECA as the aggre-gate, structural concrete can befabricated in strengths of up to 45MPa. Depending on the strengththe density can be varied between1200 and 2000 kg/m³.

The reinforcement must have thestipulated cover layer. However, this layer must not be thinner thanthe largest particle size of theLECA plus 5 mm.

Hydroculture

Excellent plant growth combined with effective

hygiene protection

Plants are efficient air purifiers andcreate a healthy environment.LECA is useful in hydroculturalapplications where minimumattention and maximum hygieneprotection are priority require-ments. LECA is chemically neutraland ensures air penetration toplant roots. At the same time, fun-gal spores, bacteria and insectpests are avoided.

LECA is a Danish productand stands for Light

Expanded Clay Aggregate. The principle for LECA pro-duction was developed by

the company Lemvigh-Müller& Munck A/S Copenhagen,

Denmark, in 1939. In Denmark, LECA is

manufactured by Dansk Leca A/S at Hinge

near Randers

LECA consists of small, lightweight, bloated particles of burnt clay. The thousands of small, air-filledcavities give LECA its strength andthermal-insulation properties. Thebase material is plastic clay whichis extensively pretreated and thenheated and expanded in a rotarykiln. Finally, the product is burnedat 1100 °C to form the finishedLECA product.

Entirely Natural ProductLECA is an environment-friendly,entirely natural product incorporat-ing the same benefits as tile inbrick form: LECA is indestructible,non-combustible, and impervious to attack by dry-rot, wet-rot andinsects.
