The real cost of inefcient lighting

    Investing in a sustainable future

Its well known that lighting accounts for around 14% of a businesss energy costs, or put

another way, thats nearly a sixth of a typical electricity bill.

    Breakdown of C02

    emissions for a typical

    ofce building

    Breakdown of C02

    emissions for a typical

    retail outlet

Companies who can demonstrate that they have a strong sustainability policy forming par t

of their corporate and social responsibility policy can often use this as an advantage to:

Here are some examples of scenarios where lighting

can become an unnecessary cost to your business:

Lights are left on when theyre not needed. A typical

ofce is only occupied between 25-30% of a week.

If a building is lit constantly around the clock that

equates to a staggering 70-75% energy wastage

or around 10% of your overall electricity bill

No lighting management system has been installed,

or if one has, it hasnt been programmed to supply

    light only when needed

An older lighting management system is in place.

Research indicates that over 75% of Europes

ofce lighting is based on outdated or inefcient

    lighting systems

These illustrations are not unique to ofces, any lit

environment can suffer from a lack of good lighting

management with its associated consequences of

increased costs and higher carbon emissions both

of which can be tackled effectively with a managed

    lighting system, programmed correctly.

In a notional building, lighting can account for around

30% of CO2emissions. Our chart below shows how

that compares with other sources of CO2

    within a

    typical building.

Energy efcient lighting systems also create benets

that are sometimes not immediately obvious. For

example, by managing your buildings lighting so

that its only in use when its needed, less heat is

generated. Less air conditioning is required an

overall reduction in use means reduced energy

consumption and lower emissions, a smaller

energy bill and a greener carbon footprint.

    Increase access to capital

    Enhance stakeholder relations and credibility

    Protect and strengthen brand image

Give transparency and visibility to potential

    investors or customers

A growing trend; sustainability issues are b ecoming

increasingly focused upon by the government and

companies alike. Increasing pressures are being put

on companies to comply with various legislation,

regulations, codes, schemes and initiatives. All of

which encourage companies to look at their business

processes and operations, to identify where they can

    become more sustainable:

    Carbon Reduction Commitment

    Energy Performance and Building Directive

    Energy Services Directive

    BREEAM Ratings

    CIBSE Guidelines

    ECA (Enhanced Capital Allowance)

Energy efcient lighting and management systems can

help towards businesses meeting these legislations

or achieving these guidelines and targets. This is

particularly pertinent and valuable to businesses given

the introduction of the newly enhanced Part L lighting

guidelines from CIBSE, effective as of October 2010.

In the UK all emergency lighting must:

Give sufcient light to allow any occupants to

navigate their way out of the building to safety,

    should the mains lighting fail

Identify and highlight location of re ghting

    equipment and call points/exits

Be capable of staying on continuously for 1 hour

although UK practice is 3 hours

Be tested regularly to ensure its in full working orderand meets requirements

Allow processes to come to a safe conclusion

Emergency Lighting has to be tested and monitored

regularly by law. A Philips Dynalite lighting management

system communicates with the emergency lighting

luminaires and gains feedback on their status, eliminating

the need for time consuming and costly manual testing.

Automated testing time and cost saving:

Testing can be controlled and performed at specic

    times, or manually triggered

Easy to use software which allows the data to be

    easily managed

Reports are stored and are easily printable acting as

    proof of legislative compliance

    A safety rst system:

Alert of any failures following the test any

problems are highlighted instantly for rectication

System tests emergency luminaires to ensure they

are capable of running off the backup power for the

required duration in the event of an emergency

    Compatible and upgradeable:

Suitable for most environments where Emergency

Lighting is required to be installed

Operates on a DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting

Interface) open protocol can be easily applied to

    any DALI based lighting installation

The system can be extended to offer full lighting

    management without a completely separate

installation being required less disruption, reduced

    cost and with better functionality!

All functions within the human body are inuenced

by the rhythm of night and day. Light has a profound

    effect on the hormones t hat control our body clocks;

    this is why:

    We generally sleep at night

We nd it more difcult to get up when its dark in

    the mornings

We get jet lag when we change time zones

Our general feeling of wellbeing varies throughout

    the day

Light affects all of this and thats why it is important to

get the right amount of light, in the right place, at the

    right time!

When you consider that for most businesses, over

70% of its costs are its people, it makes perfect sense

that businesses want look after their key assets as a

priority. Giving your employees the right amount of light

throughout the working day to perform their activities

can be achieved by correctly managing your lighting.

There are various ways light can be controlled:

Regulating light levels at different times of the day

to compensate for the amount of natural light

    entering the environment

Changing the colour hue of white light throughout

the day to mimic natural daylight rhythms, fully

    meeting the bodys natural needs

Implementing systems that suit your business

and environment help you to get the best out of

your people. These systems are perfectly suited to

    environments such as:

Ofces where articial light is used for long periods

Healthcare premises that are staffed 24/7

Not only will employees feel better, your business

will feel better too. A healthy, happy and motivated

workforce is a productive asset for your business!

    Safety rst

Over the past few decades, health and safety has become of paramount importance to

    both businesses and individuals alike.

    Its only natural

The visual effects of articial lighting are highly important, be it at work or for leisure. Light

affects more than just our eyes it inuences our mood, concentration level, activity and

sleep; it truly has a biological effect.

Directing shoppers to certain parts of the store

this can be achieved by increasing the lighting

levels in these areas to create paths to follow,

navigating shoppers around the store the way

    you want them to go

Drawing the shoppers eyes and curiosities to

a certain area by using higher lighting levels in

    that area

Being brighter on certain shelves to highlight

    key products

Installing a lighting management system gives the

exibility to the retailer or merchandiser, allowing

them to change the lighting levels in different areas

with minimal disruption and cost when new store

    layouts are implemented.

The suggested retail scenarios detailed are by no means

the limits in these environments almost anything is

possible. These can be a chieved without compromising

safety and lighting level requirements throughout the

    remainder of the space.

For instance, in a building environment an area can bechanged through the utilisation of different coloured

lighting and light levels . This means you can:

Create an ambience or mood that can improve

productivity or creativity in your workforce

Support a signicant occasion, event or theme

    Project your branding colours

Make an impression in the public spaces of your

    building for visitors

The creative possibilities achievable with lighting

are endless! This includes changes to the lighting

levels, frequency and colours using intelligent lighting

management systems. Using the same space for a

multitude of activities simply change the ambience

    or function through light.

    For example:

Change a simple boardroom into a multi-media theatre

Alter the colour or intensity of the lighting to

stimulate debate or calm the environment during

conferences, important meetings or at times during

the day when people feel low in energy

Theme a reception for a launch or national event

All of this is possible through the exibility of intelligent

    lighting management systems.

All the above can improve staff and stakeholders

experience and their perceptions of your business.

These features also help reduce costs as spaces can be

used for multiple purposes, negating the need to hire

    additional venues.

    A guiding light

Light can also be used as an enticement and guidance tool in certain retail and

    showcase environments:

    Create your environment

Imagine a space that can be transformed, at literally the ick of switch, to look like a

completely different space. Lighting management systems can give you the exibility

to transform any space with light.

Managing your lighting to perform the way you want it

to, be it to meet requirements, motivate, save energy

and costs or to set scenes, is not a dark art quite

    the opposite!

The rst step is to look at what lighting systems you

currently have installed and consider what the space

is used for; has the space utilisation changed since the

initial lighting infrastructure was installed and is it likely

    to change in the future?

In an ofce environment, this might be considering

whether the ofce layout has or is likely to change, and

if so, are you condent that the lighting systems currently

installed will be exible enough to change to suit?

Give thought to how the space is used is it occupied

around the clock or only ve days a week between the

hours of 7am and 7pm? Consider if you really need the

meeting room lights on when theyre not being used.

Think about areas that are only used at certain times

of the day or night. By conducting a simple audit like

this, you can start to see where and when you actually

    need light.

Lighting management systems can be congured to

manage the lighting in different ways:

Automatically switching lights on and off at certain

    programmed times of the day

Presence detection lights only come on when

needed in that space; saving up to 30% energy

Daylight linking light levels adjust automatically to

take into account the amount of natural daylight

entering space; typical savings of up to 70% can be

achieved on those light ttings next to windows

Combining daylight linking with presence detection

realise practical savings of up to 55% in terms of

    energy and cost

Exactly the same principles and issues apply to hotels,

retail outlets, airports, schools and hospit als. All these

environments have spaces that are only occupied some

of the time, where presence detection would be of

huge benet. Or they might have a large amount of

windows, perfect for dimming solutions. The beauty of

lighting management systems is that the options are

    practically innite.

Not only will our highly skilled team assess your

businesss lighting management requirements, they are

fully informed about the latest legislation and initiatives

and understand how effective lighting solutions can help

    your business to meet these.

We know that budgets are sometimes tight, prioritised

or simply pre-allocated to specic projects. To help your

business overcome such budgetary constraints and enable

it to star t realising savings through investing in lighting,

we can, where appropriate, offer your business var ious

nancing options. Spread the initial costs, whilst reaping

    the savings!

The Philips LMM system was trialled successfully

by Tescos Centre of Excellence. Featuring Light

Manager software, which allows screen based

exibility, it was then rolled out across all stores

We have helped Tesco to create a exible lighting

control and management programme that is easily

    operated via their intranet

The majority of Tescos larger stores have been

designed with vast glass panels to allow maximum

daylight onto the sales oor. The Philips LMM system

can work alongside natural daylight and adapt to

maintain the perfect ambiance for shoppers

    Benets:

    4M savings across 140 stores

It was important to provide an efcient blanket

of light throughout th e stores. The decision to use

automatic dimming meant that daylight could be

    combined with lighting seamlessly

In addition, stores adopted the concept of energy

harvesting, lowering light levels during the rst hour

of trading for non 24 hour stores. It was discovered

that lower light levels had no effect on trading

Average light levels were reduced by a quarter for

week day trading hours, while for night trading it was

dimmed further to just under half the original level.

During stock replenishment, light was reduced still

further, to a quarter of the original level

    Testimonial:

Ray Porter, Engineering Deliver y Manager for Tesco:

With the replacement of the current high bay lighting

system across 46 of our larger stores, we were able

to incorporate the LMM lighting management system

into the lighting scheme, thereby maximising the

    signicant energy savings it offered.
