HomeAid announces the completion of Clifton Sanctuary Ministries’ project!

HomeAid and Builder Captain, Pat Morgan of First Street Builders completed the renovation of two buildings for Clifton Sanctuary Ministries (Clifton)—their emergency shelter which includes administrative offices, as well as Joe’s Place, their transitional housing apartment building. The improvements made to the two buildings will allow 35 men to build new lives.

In the main building containing the emergency shelter, laundry facilities, clinic, cafeteria and administrative offices, the subfloors were leveled - thanks to Norbord and BMC, and new tile added - thanks to Atlanta Flooring Design. The entire front of the building was demolished and rebuilt, adding insulation and new windows - thanks to BFS, Team Rubicon and Candler Park Restorations, improving three rooms—the pantry, overnight volunteer host room and the nurses’ station. Timberlake Cabinets helped reconfigure the commercial kitchen once it had a fresh paint of coat thanks to KBC Painting and Sherwin-Williams. Eagle Scout, Sidney Howard, lead Troop 18 to rebuild the rotting deck, and Robert Stephens’ general handyman skills completed the deck with a roof, plus several other fixes along the way.

“The building used to be an old farmhouse which was converted into a church and has been serving as a shelter for homeless men for nearly 40 years. Parts of the building are over 100 years old, and were in desperate need of repair,” said Gordon Slade, Clifton Board Member.

B. Tucker HVAC fine tuned the heating and air systems. A group of handy folks from Eastminster Presbyterian took care of a crumbling retaining wall at the back of the building, on top of volunteering to rebuild the front rooms. Finally, national product partner, GE Appliances provided two new washers and dryers as well as two new upright freezers.

Builder Captain, Pat Morgan then turned his attention to Joe’s Place for window replacements - thanks to Boral and Magnolia Windows. Finally, repair were made to the exterior stairs. All told, the project saved Clifton approximately 50% of construction costs that can now be used to help the homeless men in their care, around 40% of whom are veterans. Builder Captain, Pat Morgan, who is also a veteran, had this to say about his experience, “I’m proud to have been able to help at Clifton. What I’ve found so gratifying so far is that we have had just the right people show up at just the right time to do the tasks at hand in the time available.”

HomeAid is so grateful to First Street Builders, all those ‘right people’, and we are excited to celebrate with them at the ribbon-cutting dedication ceremony this June. Thanks so much to the following donors for helping us BUILD NEW LIVES at Clifton Sanctuary Ministries!

HomeAid Atlanta Builder Captain Steven Sanders-Myers and team from Resonate Church Atlanta worked hard to repair and expand two of the girls’ bunkrooms for the City Camp program at Wilderness Works (WW). WW serves homeless, at-risk and very vulnerable children by providing year-round enrichment, experiential education and character development programs.

The City Camp program operates in an old church on Memorial Drive, and a roof leak was preventing construction, resulting in less room for participants in the overnight camp program. HomeAid brought Sanders-Myers to assess the feasibility of the project. WW Executive Director, Bill Mickler, lead a tour of the facility and was pleased to hear that the project was feasible, could be done in a month, and for minimal cost, thanks to HomeAid.

The volunteers made quick work of tearing down walls in two existing rooms and connecting them to space that was previously unusable. Thanks in part to Carolina Lumber for donated materials, the crew assembled additional bunk beds, adding space for eight more girls to participate! The project saved WW approximately 80% on construction costs. Thank you Steven Sanders-Myers, Resonate Church Atlanta and Carolina Lumber for helping to build new space to help Build New Lives for the young ladies served by Wilderness Works!

Project Updates HomeAid’s total renovation at The Drake Village in Roswell is almost complete, thanks to volunteer Builder Captain Dan O’Dwyer of O’Dwyer Homes and all the project’s donors! The Drake Village will more than double The Drake House’s capacity, adding 56 beds to serve homeless women with children in north Fulton County.

Steve Brock of Brock Built Homes is serving as volunteer Builder Captain for HomeAid’s total renovation of an apartment building at Making A Way Housing (MAWH). When completed, this project will add 16 new beds. MAWH provides emergency, transitional, and permanent supportive housing and case management to homeless adults, male and female, facing complex challenges

associated with chronic homelessness, substance abuse, mental illness, and HIV and AIDS.

In April, HomeAid brought Georgia Tech Masters of Architecture Students, Bailey Rummler and Mitra Maghsoudloo, to meet with service provider House of Dawn (HoD). HoD is fundraising for new building construction. Cobbled together from a single-family, modest ranch home, the current space houses five teenaged mothers ages 13-18 and their babies, a 24-hour staff person, and small child care area. As a part of their coursework, Rummler and Maghsoudloo met with some of the young mothers residing at HoD’s Second Chance Home to share and refine some conceptual drawings they created for the new home.

On March 23, HomeAid held its first Care Day of 2018 at Solomon’s Temple in Atlanta. Solomon’s Temple provides housing to single women and women with children as they strive to rebuild their lives. Volunteers from Engel & Völkers Buckhead Atlanta, Kennesaw State University National Association of Home Builders Student Chapter, and Georgia Gwinnett College transformed the grounds by clearing and replanting several garden beds, and re-mulching the playground and picnic areas. The workday generated a savings of approximately $3,000, funds that will be used to help meet the immediate needs of the women and children served. Thank you to all volunteers, and Engel & Völkers for its financial support. Thanks to Ross

Davies of Super-Sod for her expert knowledge and planning assistance. Following the event, Kecia Baker of Solomon’s Temple remarked, “It truly takes a village to make the world go ‘round and HomeAid has been our village! We've accomplished so much with the help of HomeAid and their good volunteers’ hard work. We are so grateful!”

Why I Support HomeAid Atlanta Steve King, HomeAid Board Treasurer

I got involved with HomeAid because of Carl Riden, a friend who was my mentor in the homebuilding business. A past HomeAid Board President, he told me that serving on the board was one of the most

rewarding things that he had ever done. He thought that I would feel the same. He was right. I have remained involved because of the opportunity to do something for others outside of the profit realm. The need for helping the homeless never ends, which means that the need for people to provide that help remains constant as well. It is a privilege to play even a small part in trying to help people escape tough circumstances on the way to a better life. Bad things happen to good people sometimes, and I would like to think that if I or my family were in that situation then someone would help us. For that reason I believe that helping others get back on their feet is the right thing to do.

HomeAid is so grateful to Steve for all he has done for HomeAid over the years! Thank you for giving back through HomeAid Atlanta!
