Volume XI, Issue I

In This Issue

When I was first introduced to HomeAid and its mission, I was saddened to learn that many people among today’s homeless population are women, children, and families. They often find

themselves homeless due to unforeseen circumstances and random chance. I was immediately struck with a newfound appreciation for the importance of a home. It’s been a humbling and rewarding experience to serve on HomeAid’s board for the last three years, and I’m excited to serve as the 2019 Board President.

We have a lot planned for this year and we’re already off to a busy start. In January, we completed an interior renovation at The Drake Village (read

more about this inside). In February, we completed a renovation at House of Dawn in Jonesboro, led by Silverstone Communities and Doug Cotter, adding new beds for four young mothers and four babies.

Here is what’s in store for the rest of the year as we work to achieve our mission to build new lives for homeless families and individuals through housing and community outreach:

We are assisting with appliances as part of a project that will preserve 56 beds at Rosalyn House, a 3Keys apartment complex serving people with mental disabilities.

We plan to work with House of Dawn again on a new build project that will house five teen mothers and their babies.

Soon, we hope to start a project with the Veterans Empowerment Organization (VEO) to add 10 beds and a much-needed community center for homeless veterans.

We will partner with MUST Ministries in Cobb County to help them complete their new campus, adding 100 beds.

Ten Care Days are on the calendar in 2019, as well as our Essentials Drive, Stock the House Drive, and CareKits.

None of these aspirations would be possible without people like you, our generous donors, volunteers, and support from the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association. You enable us to make a huge difference in countless lives, and I encourage you to stay involved this year.

Here are just some of HomeAid’s happenings in November and December 2018.

Special thanks to Naylor, LLC for donating printing services

for this newsletter.

BOMA Georgia—HomeAid Care Day

On November 2, HomeAid Atlanta partnered with BOMA Georgia (Building Owners and Managers Association of Georgia) for a BOMA-HomeAid Care Day at Atlanta Hospital Hospitality House. This was the sixth time HomeAid and BOMA Georgia have collaborated for a major Care Day event. More than 100 BOMA Georgia volunteers completed an enormous scope of work, providing a savings of $30,000!

CareKits with Bank of America

On November 16, HomeAid Atlanta and Bank of America employees partnered together to assemble 1,000 HomeAid CareKits as part of HomeAid’s Homelessness Awareness Month. The CareKits, sponsored by Bank of America, were donated to Atlanta Dream Center and SafeHouse Outreach, both Atlanta organizations that work directly with homeless individuals who seek immediate assistance with basic needs.

Stock the House Drive with Meridian Brick & Masonry Supply

Meridian Brick and Masonry Supply joined HomeAid’s Stock the House Drive, donating generously to Forsyth County Family Haven. Meridian employees provided holiday gifts and more. The HomeAid staff enjoyed a holiday lunch at Meridian on December 18 along with Amy Barfield of Family Haven.

16th Annual Housing the Homeless Golf Tournament

November 6, 2018 was a great day at gorgeous Capital City Club Crabapple. Ninety golfers hit the links for HomeAid Atlanta’s 2018 golf tournament in support of our mission to build new lives. More information on back cover!

The Drake Village Renovation Complete

Project Playhouse® 2018

Thanks to the enthusiastic support of donors and volunteers, Project Playhouse, HomeAid’s unique fundraising event, returned in 2018 after an eight-year hiatus. A single playhouse, The Saltbox of the Earth, designed by Mike Hart of The Hartwin Group, was built by students from the Kennesaw State University Dept. of Construction Management over several Saturdays in the fall. Paran Homes oversaw the project as volunteer Builder Captain. In November, the playhouse was displayed at Avalon and the public participated in a raffle to win The Saltbox of the Earth. HomeAid staff drew the winner live on Facebook on December 14. Congratulations to the winner, Chelsea C. of Alpharetta! Thank you to the 2018 Project Playhouse® donors:

In January, HomeAid completed an interior renovation at Roswell’s The Drake House. The Drake Village interior renovation project, led by volunteer Builder Captain Ryan Swallow of South Haven Builders, provides housing for 28 homeless single mothers and their children. With the completion of The Drake Village pro-ject, The Drake House's original capacity to serve homeless women and their children has doubled (from 44 to 100 beds). The eight-unit apartment building makes The Drake Village move-in ready for eight more north Fulton County fami-lies who will have a safe and dignified home as they work to rebuild their lives.

Meet Karen McLane! HomeAid Atlanta is proud to welcome Karen McLane as Director of Community Outreach. Karen transitioned into the nonprofit environment in 2012, when she moved from Atlanta to upstate New York to serve as the Community Relations Manager for Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County. During her six years there, she developed a

strong volunteer engagement and community relations program that brought significant growth to the organization. She brought in new community partners and donors, created the organization’s signature fundraising event and implemented the AmeriCorps National Service Program. Prior to 2012, McLane was the Senior Program Director at an Atlanta-based medical education company for more than ten years. Karen looks forward to using her experience and skills to help HomeAid Atlanta continue serving the homeless and growing the impact already made in the community.

2018 Housing the Homeless Golf Tournament
