Tony Roberts Custom Homes presents a Hill Country style custom home at 2943 Dry Hollow Drive with a French flair. This 2715 sq. ft. home consists of 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a study, an office and a powder bath along with a 3 car garage.

The interior features exposed timber beams, rock accent walls and a rock fireplace with a custom limestone mantel and hearth. Wood flooring is featured in the great room, dining room, study and master bedroom with 18” ceramic tile throughout the remainder of the house. Painted doors and trim offer a

crisp contrast and nicely compliment the hand trowel textured walls and Jeld Wen Premium vinyl windows. A custom light package with generous use of recessed lighting and ceiling fans with light kits finish the Hill Country design.

The kitchen boasts custom maple cabinets with unique square panel doors and concealed hinges. The kitchen, island and bar all feature granite counter tops with under-mount sinks and Moen faucets. Kitchenaid appliances and a walk-in pantry finish the extraordinary kitchen.

The master suite features a very

spacious his and her walk-in closet and inviting bathroom. His and her vanities are granite counter tops with under-mount Kohler sinks. Ceramic tile surrounds both the Kohler soaking tub and the custom walk in shower.

The exterior consists of a galvalume Zinc Grey roof with ogee style aluminum gutters across the front and rear elevations. Native limestone and stucco facades along with an Alder entry door and cedar covered garage doors complete the beautiful Hill Country feel of this home.

Scott Parker and his crew have the golf course looking better than ever. We have many great events this month for members, beginning with The brute on the 4th and 5th. This exciting, two-day event is a match play in which you and your partner will play 5, nine-hole matches against the other teams in your flight. It begins on Saturday with 3 matches, followed by lunch, then the final 2 matches on Sunday. The MGA Partnership on June 11th and 12th is a new event for the MGA, and promises tremendous entertainment. We also have Couples Twilight golf on July 1st and July 22nd.

The first annual Kings & Queens couples’ member guest will be held July 21st – 23rd. The schedule of events includes a complimentary practice round on Thursday, July 21st, along with a pairings party offering complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres that evening. Friday, July 22nd will begin with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start, followed by lunch and a putting contest in the afternoon. Saturday, July 23rd will begin with a

9:00 a.m. shotgun start, followed by lunch and the awards ceremony in the Vista Room with beer and margaritas. This first annual couples member guest is sure to be a thrilling event. Pick up a schedule of events in the golf shop for more details.

In April, the club hosted the Red and blue, which is Comanche Trace’s version of the Ryder Cup. The blue team, captained by Leonard Scott and Jacob Davis went against the Red team of John Harrison and Tony Johnson. It was a very competitive two day event that finished with a score of 21.5 blue to 14.5 Red. Way to go blue team! Thank you to all the players from both teams and to all the wives who came out to support the event. This is a great event in which all the players qualify for their spots, so make sure to sign up for as many MGA events in the future to help get in next year’s event.

I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped during the Valero Texas Open qualifier this year. The Valero Texas Open qualifier was

UPDATEGolf SUMMER IS HEREIT’S TIME TO bREAK OUT THE bERMUDA SHORTS AND PLAY SOME GOLF!

Page 15: Lifestyle June/July 2011

held on April 7th and 11th and we had some of the top Nationwide and touring professionals trying to qualify for 4 spots to the new TPC Marriott JW resort in San Antonio. The low score on Thursday during the pre-qualifier was 66. Our own Jacob Davis, Assistant Professional at Comanche Trace, came in with a 69. The weather on Monday changed with gusty winds blowing out of the north at 20 to 30 mph. The top four went on to play in the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio. Chris Smith shot the low of the day with a 66. Parker Labarge shot a 68 and there was a 6-way playoff for the last two spots at 69. The course was in beautiful shape and comments from the professionals were that “Comanche Trace has some of the best greens in Texas.” The players also would like to thank the many volunteers who helped, and noted that the generosity of our membership is second to none.

Just a quick reminder of the Men’s Club Championship on July 29th, 30th & 31st. Also, Kid Comanche is scheduled for June 14th- 17th and again July 12th- 15th. Make sure to get the kids and/or grandkids signed up through the golf shop.

Speed and Read equally ImportantAs an instructor it has been drilled

into my head that speed is more

important than line. This will always have some measure of truth to it. For example, if you have a perfect read but end up one inch short, you obviously had a speed issue. In my own effort, if you read a putt incorrectly and have the appropriate speed you can still end up in three-putt territory, particularly with double-breaking putts. It doesn’t take much to end up with a five to seven footer that should have been two feet, at worst.

On the contrary, reading the greens better has dramatically improved my speed; only if I get fooled do I end up with a longer second putt than I wanted. There is no question that speed is important with a putt but if you misread a putt with correct speed it is definitely worse than reading it correctly and ending up an inch short (the second scenario is definitely better from a competition standpoint).

Car washes are now being exclusively offered to members & their guests at Comanche Trace. The Drop Area at Comanche Trace will be giving full service Auto & Golf Cart Detailing in the lower level parking area at the clubhouse.

Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 9am-6pm.

Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. Call the Golf Shop at 830-895-8500 ext. 248 to make your appointment!

Every season golf enthusiasts anxiously await announcements of new equipment introductions. The biggest and best new driver that’s going to give them an extra 30 yards off the tee, or perhaps the redesigned hybrid that will make fairway shots so much more accurate. And then there’s the new putter… sure to improve the score. Hope springs eternal, right? What many of you are forgetting, however, is your most important piece of equipment is not your clubs, or your golf balls, but it’s your body! That’s right! All the latest and greatest equipment will have no positive effect on your game if your body is not fit to swing a club.

Most golfers do not consider themselves athletes. An athlete, after all, is someone who is competing in a physically demanding sport. Football and basketball players, as an example – they’re athletes. Those sports put a great deal of physical strain on a body, so in turn, the players must embark on a regular physical routine to not only perform at their peak, but to prevent possible injury.

Golf, though, is a different story. It’s not a contact sport. You’re just hitting that little ball down the fairway and then most likely getting

in the golf cart to take you to the next shot. How physically demanding can that be? Well, as it turns out, pretty demanding. The average golfer is taking about 60 full swings each round, and if you include practice swings – double that. Not only are major joints involved – hips and shoulders to name two – but all the muscles that need to be toned in order to keep those joints strong. Effective body mechanics require flexibility, stability, mobility, balance and muscular strength. Without all those attributes, you will no doubt be plagued by a mediocre golf game and a high propensity to injury.

As a Titleist Performance Institute Certified Golf Fitness Instructor, let me assess your physical attributes just as your golf professional assesses your swing. How much more effective would those golf lessons be if you were actually able to perform the motions required? With a TPI 12-point physical screening, you will know where your limitations are. Then, embarking on an exercise program designed specifically for your needs, you can focus your training time to just those areas that can improve your game and help you prevent those inevitable injuries.

For a well tuned golf game, time on the

practice range must be combined with time in the gym. No one wants to waste time, so use that gym time to work on areas that are specific to improving your weaknesses. begin with flexibility and core strengthening and eventually transition into mobility, balance and muscular endurance training.

You will only be as good as your weakest link. The compensations you have made in your golf game developed around those weak links, most likely resulting in poor habits and improper mechanics. Let’s work on those physical mechanics which will translate to a better and safer golf game. Give me a call today to set up your screening appointment. Let the TPI program work for you!

Kerr County and Kerrville have a rich tradition of faith and of cooperation among the churches and religious groups of this area.

The second church building in Kerrville had Sunday services alternating between the Methodists, the Presbyterians, the Disciples of Christ, and the baptists.

Father Kemper who served as priest at the Notre Dame Catholic Church from 1911 to 1955 was known for taking Sunday nights to visit the Protestant churches.

Local churches, numbering over ninety in the county, support ministries to children, youth, senior adults, and those in poverty. From Young Life to the Christian Assistance Ministry, from the YMCA to the New Hope Counseling Center, from Art 2 Heart to the Christian Women’s Job Corps, there are important ministries making a difference in the lives of thousands in this Hill Country county.

Seated around the table of the Kerrville Ministerial Alliance are representatives from Lutheran, baptist, Church of Christ, Unity Charismatic, Presbyterian, Episcopalian and Methodist churches.

Included in the community are Jewish persons, Muslims, buddhists, and other faith groups.

Kerrville is a very pleasant area in the

Texas Hill Country with a remarkable climate. It’s very atypical from what

you’d expect in Texas. It’s about six degrees dryer and cooler year ‘round. That’s great for golfers.

If you dream of living in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, you’re not alone. Those of us that have realized that dream cherish the close-knit community and beautiful setting. But when selecting an area to raise children the key consideration should be the school system. In Kerrville, Texas your dreams can come true as you raise your children while we raise the bar to provide the highest quality of education in the area.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Kerrville Independent School District stands as the only 4A or 5A district in the region to receive a “Recognized” or “Exemplary” rating. Every single KISD campus received a Texas Education Agency rating of “Exemplary” or “Recognized.” This, despite rising standards and looming cuts to the public education budget, KISD continues to provide the highest quality of education without raising taxes. Earning a “Superior Achievement” rating on the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas for the eighth consecutive year, KISD remains financially stable even in unstable times

and, for multiple years, KISD’s tax rate has remained in the bottom 15% of districts in Texas.

Providing high quality education to students at the current cost, with a price tag that can be easily worn by all taxpayers, will be a huge challenge in the coming years but one Superintendent Dan Troxell meets head on. Named the

2008 Texas Association of School Boards Superintendent of the Year, Troxell will continue his mission to leave no child unchallenged through the teamwork of a veteran School Board of Trustees with over 57 years combined service to children in Kerrville.

KISD has much to be proud of. While top ratings obviously prove strong academics, KISD cherishes the hearts of the teachers, staff, administrators, community members, business leaders, and KISD families who are passionate about ensuring quality education for all children in Kerrville. The 725 fulltime staff works tirelessly to provide all children with the academic, emotional, and social support they need to be successful inside and outside of the classroom. The 4,887 students are committed to learning and welcome the challenges of rigor through Advanced Placement, Dual Credit, Co-enrollment, or Gifted and Talented Education.

College bound? Your child will be ready when graduating from Tivy High School. Once again, Tivy received the prestigious College Readiness Award. Only 5% of Texas high schools receive this honor for successfully preparing students for college. Coupled with a legacy of National Merit Scholars and annual state qualifiers in a number of University Interscholastic League (UIL) areas, students graduate from KISD prepared for higher learning or a career. Says Troxell, “The biggest misconception is that a district’s job is complete once a student graduates. KISD focuses on preparing students for college and

KeRRvIlle IndePendent scHOOl dIstRIct“ “

Page 41: Lifestyle June/July 2011

LIFESTYLE JUNE/JULY 2011 41

preparing them for life. From college and career counseling, Career and Technology programs, offering a non-traditional high school setting for working students, to creating a community college for both current high school students and adults throughout the Hill Country, KISD strives to offer all the necessary tools to equip students for school and life.”

Being well rounded is key to that lifelong success and KISD embraces both academic and athletic offerings. The Tivy Fight Never Dies mantra is proven on the field and off, whether through strong sports programs or the districts numerous academic competitions or extra-curricular opportunities. Become a Tivy Antler or Lady Antler in dozens of sports or display your talents in Destination Imagination, Mock Trial, Debate, UIL, or become a cadet in our Texas Distinguished Unit of Junior Air Force R.O.T.C. Even at the elementary level, our future graduates can thrive through elementary orchestra, Challenge Labs, and youth leadership programs on every campus.

Best of all, the beautiful Texas Hill country setting offers our children a living laboratory. With invitations to learn inside and outside of the classroom throughout the year, our students and staff have benefited in the area of science

by the wealth of college, university, and camp programs willing to work with our students. Close proximity to numerous parks and recreation facilities and the availability of nearby camps open doors to our students for outdoor education to inspire a quest for science.

Involved parents and a supportive business community are the hallmark of the district. Shares Troxell, “The school and community are a united force, acting in harmony, so that each student will succeed.” Organizations like the Kerrville Public School Foundation (KPSF) shore up the strength of the district through their mission to serve as a catalyst for involving the community in the enhancement and achievement of academic excellence for the children of Kerrville ISD by providing financial assistance not available through state or local funding. From raising money for our teachers and campuses through instructional grants or for numerous student scholarships, the Foundation nears a silver anniversary of support.

In Kerrville ISD it seems everywhere you turn, children are given the support they need to be successful. We wouldn’t dream of anything else, nor should you. We invite you to take a closer look.

Stavinoha Enterprises is proud to present this elegant hill country home overlooking Stone Creek and the surrounding hill country. The architect, builder, and homeowner worked together to take advantage of the views from every window. As you enter the home, you’ll notice the lovely stone interior walls, beams, wood windows, tall ceilings, wood floors and more. But your eyes will continue to be drawn to the views. Step onto the large covered patio with thick

stone arches framing this beautiful view, pull up a chair and enjoy. Don’t miss the built in barbeque pit and gas grill. As you head back into the kitchen, you’ll find rustic cherry cabinets, beautiful granite countertops and stainless appliances. There are two guest suites each with private baths, a study with vaulted ceiling and stone wall showcasing the large picture window which frames the view of the clubhouse. The curved stone wall in the master bath is the perfect backdrop

for the gorgeous tub and Swarovski crystal chandelier. Travertine floors, an oversized shower and rustic cherry cabinets finish off this warm and elegant bath. The laundry room is conveniently located just off the master bath. The motor court and garages provide great parking and amazing storage with room for 3 cars, golf cart, storage room and shop area. All of the materials for this home were carefully selected to reflect the beauty and charm of the Texas Hill Country.

No one is more passionate about their hobby than the garden guru’s at Comanche trace. Veteran and novice gardeners enjoyed a gathering of the Garden plot Growers. Green thumbs were on dis-play everywhere. it’s hard to beat the camaraderie of avid soil breakers. More than thirty residents and members shared a great time with one another at a reception in their honor Wednesday, April 20th at the Comanche trace garden. At the reception new members and veteran members enjoyed the oppor-tunity to compare gardening tips and get to know one another. because of an overwhelming response to the gardens, Comanche trace just completed nine new garden plots in March. it was a digging good time!

From the moment you enter through the beautiful, mahogany front door, the home welcomes you. The maple floors are stained dark to enhance the old world hand-tooled walls. The soaring 19 ft. ceiling and fireplace in the great room invite you to share that “hill country” feel. The built-in granite bar and custom glass cabinets offer a nice touch of hospitality. The study/library off of the great room is that perfect spot to do a little work or catch up on reading. With a stunning granite

island and contrasting dark granite countertops, Thermador 6-burner gas range, beautiful cherry custom cabinets, and so much more, the kitchen is a cook’s dream. Hand crafted cantera columns usher you into the dining room that lights up with a crystal chandelier. The master suite has the same exquisite views as the rest of the house along with a luxurious bathroom with custom cherry cabinetry and large closet.

When you go out onto the porch, a water feature greets you with a gentle waterfall sound. A granite pathway leads to the outdoor kitchen that has all a man needs to enjoy his time in his kitchen. With stone, rustic wood cabinets, smoker, power burner, grill, and a TV (not to mention the incredible views), good times and friendships cannot help but grow.

One of the many perks of living close to Kerrville is that it’s a college town. Schreiner University, a growing Presbyterian-related liberal arts college with 1,117 students and more than 100 faculty, is known for excellent academic programs and for making a private-school education accessible to students of all income levels. Schreiner also offers a variety of learning opportunities for people who may not see themselves as students anymore.

There is a growing cadre of Hill Country residents who have discovered that Schreiner welcomes the community to participate in a variety of educational and cultural programs, most of which are free. (Please see Schreiner’s web calendar for a complete listing of events: www.schreiner.edu.) Here are just a few, starting with one that requires the most commitment, followed by many that require only your willingness to come to campus and open your mind.

Senior Auditors: If you are 55 or older and would like to audit (no credit, no grade) a college-level class, you may do so for a nominal fee, providing the class you choose has space available after credit-seeking students have registered. Class sizes are restricted to preserve Schreiner’s 13/1 student-to-teacher ratio.

There is a non-refundable application fee of $25 and courses are $25 per “credit” hour. Transcripts are not required but an application is. To apply to Schreiner as an auditor, go to the University website at www.schreiner.edu/admission/apply.html and look under the Non-Degree Admission at the bottom of the page.

Texas Music Coffeehouse: Artists you’ve

heard of and some you haven’t (yet) perform monthly at these events that Schreiner and the Texas Heritage Music Foundation co-sponsor on campus. It’s developed a loyal following of music-lovers of all ages that enjoy the intimate, casual atmosphere.

Monday Night Fiction and Non-Fiction Book Club: At the beginning of fall and spring semesters, the book titles and

dates for the two series are announced. Schreiner faculty facilitate discussion for the evening and anyone who has read the book is welcome to participate.

Robert P. Hallman Chautauqua, Harry Crate, Labatt and Margaret Syers Lecture Series: These are a few of the scholarly lecture series that Schreiner offers to students and community members alike.

Each one has its own focus. Hallman showcases Schreiner’s faculty and their research and scholarly learning. Crate lectures focus on scientific careers and research. Labatt brings motivational speakers to campus and serves to link the campus with its Hill Country community. Syers lectures highlight the value and beauty of literature.

Volunteer: It is Schreiner University’s great good fortune to be surrounded by a community so rich in diverse expertise and experiences…

and that they are willing to share them. If you are interested, please visit http://www.schreiner.edu/volunteer/index.html . There is a posted list of volunteer opportunities, but if your expertise doesn’t match those areas, please fill out an online volunteer application and Schreiner’s volunteer coordinator will see where your talents and skills are needed.

The Peterson Regional Medical Center continues their commitment of being the

medical leader within the Hill Country by acquiring the state-of-the-art advanced surgical technology known as the da Vinci® Surgical System.

The da Vinci® Surgical System combines computer and robotic technologies to create a new category of minimally invasive surgery options. This robotic system allows the surgeon to work in a smaller space with better visualization of the area they are operating on. The da Vinci doesn’t do the surgery; it allows the trained surgeon to manipulate robotic “arms” with his/her thumb and forefinger. The result is an extremely steady and precise surgery. It will enhance the patient experience with less after-surgery pain and a shorter patient recovery time.

Bringing the da Vinci to Peterson will definitely have a positive economic impact on Kerrville. Patients who want this type of minimally invasive surgery will not have to travel to San Antonio or Austin where da Vinci surgery is available. “Having this advanced technology will also help us recruit physicians to the area,” explained Pat Murray, CEO of PRMC. “There are physicians all over the country who are familiar with the da Vinci. Being able to offer that option to their patients is an extra incentive as they consider bringing their practice to Kerrville.”

“Peterson Regional Medical Center is our community hospital” stated Robert C. Fairchild, President of the PRMC Foundation Board. “It is really a privilege

Leading the campaign effort are Tri-chairs, Melissa Pevehouse Hoelscher, R. E. “Ed” Warren, Jr. and James E. Wilson, CPA. Other members of the Campaign Steering Committee are: R. H. “Sonny” Baldwin, Kathy Camp Casper, Robert C. Fairchild, Frank W. Maresh, CPA, Louis Romero, Jr., Shirley and Robert L. Schmerbeck, III, A. L. “Curg” Starkey, III, M. Scott Stehling, Edgar A. Wallace, L. Bryant Williams, and William Womack.

Those who wish to participate in helping bring this state-of-the-art surgical system to Kerrville are encouraged to call 830-258-7411 to find out how they can make a donation.
