  • MARKET REVIEW

    Market Review

Ÿ On ground momentum in the economy continues to remain weak as can be seen in the quarter 2 GDP data. India's Industrial Production shrank for the second consecutive month in September with factory output declining by 4.3%.

Ÿ The WPI for October was at 0.16% and the CPI grew at 4.62% mostly due to spike in food inflation. Equity market remained strong during the month with BSE Sensex rising by 2.4% and CNX Nifty rising by 2.3%.

Ÿ Sector-wise indices- Bankex, BSE Realty, BSE Metal and BSE Healthcare gave positive returns of 7.2%, 5.4%, 4.2% and 3.8%% respectively during the month, whereas major drags were seen in BSE FMCG, BSE Auto, BSE Capital Goods and BSE Consumer durables with negative returns of -3.1%, -4.4%, -6.8% and -7.9% respectively during the month. BSE IT, BSE Oil and Gas and BSE Power were also in the negative territory during the month with returns of -0.2%, -1.8% and -2.4% respectively.

    Capital flows:

FIIs were net buyers in the equity to the tune of ₹ 22,490 crores

(US$3146 mn) in November 2019. Cumulatively, FIIs bought equity

worth ₹ 95,593 crores (US$13,569 mn) in last twelve months i.e. from

December'18-November'19 and DII bought equity worth ₹ 52,108

crores (US$7,364 mn) for the same period. (As on 29th November

    2019, Source: SEBI) (November 2019 Avg. 1 USD = INR 71.4799)

    Outlook

Ÿ The equity market continues to be weighed down by the domestic

economy slowdown which does not seem to bottom out. Consistent

with the meltdown in the high frequency indicators, real GDP growth

moderated sharply in 2QFY20 with 1HFY20 GDP growth of 4.8% (vs

7.5% in 1HFY19) which was the lowest since March-13. While

manufacturing sector witnessed decline of 1% in 2QFY20, consistent

with the downtrend witnessed in the IIP data, GVA growth in the

agricultural sector improved marginally to 2.1%.

Ÿ In this midst, there have been some positive news with government

announcing reforms such as privatization of certain PSU's and partial

resolution of certain stressed sectors like telecom. However, looking at

the current economic scenario, the central government and the RBI

may be forced to take further actions to bring the economy back on

track. It is evident that the economy's private consumption expenditure

along with rural consumption must rise to support the overall growth

    aspirations of the economy.

Ÿ The silver linings amidst the macro chaos has been that the

government expenditure has grown by 11.6% and the financial

services sector grew by 5.8%. Passenger car sales grew by a marginal

11.4% in October after declining for 11 straight months. As a fund

house, while we remain cautious on the slowing demand scenario in

    DEBT

the Indian economy, we continue to believe consumer centric players

with strong distribution networks, differentiated products, no regulatory

overhang on manufacturing units, strong urban and rural base and

clear competitive advantage are better placed to tide over any market

    volatility.

    Market Review

Ÿ The month started on a slight negative note with Moody's downgrading its Outlook on India's Sovereign Credit to negative from Stable. The change in Outlook was led by weakening growth impulses, rising fiscal risks and ongoing NBFC crises. Slowdown in growth is a reflection of weak rural and urban demand.

Ÿ While rural demand has been caused by adverse terms of trade facing agriculture, urban weakness is due to funding crunch facing NBFC's, who have been the key lenders in the consumer durable space. This was reflected in the IIP data for September 2019, that came in at -4.3% YoY vs 4.6% YoY a year ago.

Ÿ GDP growth also moderated to a six year low of 4.5% during Q2FY20 compared to 5% in the previous quarter. Nominal GDP growth also slipped to 6.1%, which was the lowest in 2 decades. On the other hand CPI inflation rate edged higher to 4.62% YoY in October 2019 vs 3.99% YoY in September 2019, driven primarily by a sharp spike in vegetable prices even while core inflation moderated.

Ÿ The rise in food inflation was led by higher food prices on the back of extended monsoon and flooding in parts of the country. Further centre's fiscal deficit for April-October touched 7.2 trillion exceeding full year budgetary target of 7.04 trillion. To achieve the budgetary target of 6.63 trillion GST in the last 5 months, will be a herculean task for the already slowing economy.

Ÿ FOMC minutes confirmed that the central bank is moving to a period of prolonged pause. Members of the FOMC viewed the economic outlook as positive. Weak global growth environment and subdued global inflation were identified as the primary reasons for pushing inflation risks to the downside.

Ÿ A key variable will be the labour markets that will be used by the FOMC to assess whether supply side weakness is passing to the demand side. So far there has been limited signs of that.

    Outlook

Ÿ Considering the downward trend seen in the IIP and GDP data, RBI

is expected to revise downward its GDP forecast to around 5.5% from

6.1% revised earlier from 6.9% in previous MPC meeting. Going ahead,

we expect food inflation to continue to rise driven by an adverse base

    and fluctuations in perishables.

Ÿ Core is expected to remain benign given the growing economic

slack and widening output gap. RBI in its upcoming MPC needs to

provide guidance on prioritizing growth vs inflation and its tolerance on

the inflation numbers and fiscal breach.
